On September 22, 1949, Shirley Cupp, Irma Beisel, Frances Stuckey and Mr. Hilary Bufton Jr. met in a coffee shop in downtown Kansas City to incorporate the American Business Women’s Association (ABWA). Jean Fulkerson helped start The Kentucky Colonels Chapter on 3 June 1964 in Bowling Green, Kentucky. Twenty-six women met at Western Hills Restaurant and elected Linda Sidebottom as the first president. Besides providing professional development opportunities for local businesswomen, the Chapter gave scholarships to women furthering their education, and held social and recognition events throughout the year. Barring an eleventh hour settlement, today will mark the beginning of the fifth strike and eighth work stoppage in major league baseball over the past quarter century. At stake in this struggle is whether or not after twenty years the owners will be able to reverse the power flow into the hands of the players. The rise of the Major League Baseball Players Association under the skillful leadership of Marvin Miller, coupled with some astoundingly inept moves by ownership precipitated a power shift in baseball from management to labor.

A few weeks ago Addis and The Sporting News sponsored a symposium in New York City on the issue of job opportunity for minorities in management level positions in sport. One of the participants in the discussion was Bill Rhoden, columnist for The New York Times and The Sporting News. That symposium and several of Bill Rhoden's columns over the past few weeks have reminded me of a number of issues which have been raised in the past few years, but have not been adequately addressed in most professional and intercollegiate sports establishments.

Having been born and raised in Minnesota and now having lived nearly thirty years in Florida, I have spent most of my life on this planet in two of the fishingest states in the Union. Florida has almost as many bass fishermen as it does ways of taking money from tourists. Minnesota is called the Land of 10,000 Lakes, although in reality there are over 100,000 lakes in my home state.

It has been the year to remember the achievements of Jackie Robinson both in and outside of baseball. Robinson's breaking of the color line had a social significance which transcended the game of baseball. At the season opener at Shea Stadium the President of the United States recognized Jackie Robinson, and the Acting Commissioner of Baseball retired Jackie's number for all of major league baseball. Radio and TV programs have examined the events of 1947, social commentators have recalled Robinson's contributions to American life, and baseball historians have paid their tributes to this remarkable man.

This work details primarily the last nine years of the life of Henry Norris, a British court figure during the reign of Henry VIII. His career in Tudor England developed from and through his role in the Privy Chamber, which was a department of court operating in the king’s private suite of rooms. Norris was the most prestigious of the chamber groomsmen who took care of the king’s daily needs and personal care. As chief groomsman or Groom of the Stool, Norris also played a significant part in the distribution of offices through patronage and through his influence with the …

As the locale for one of the oldest continuing cultural, linguistic, and ethnic entities, Iran provides archaeological evidence for dance portrayed on Mesopotamean pottery dated to 5000 BCE (Zoka', 1978). Evidence for continuing choreographic activity is documented in the historical writings of foreigners, from biblical times to ancient Greece to the Persian and Ottoman empires. Iconographic artworks showing dance also exist, such as silver objects from the Sasanian period (224-650 CE) and Persian miniatures from the twelfth century. Iran is, and most likely has always been, a place of immense ethnic and linguistic diversity, a continental crossroad open to influences …
