Is there anyone alive in the United States today who does not know that the Super Bowl is coming up on Sunday? It is Super Bowl XXXV, thirty-five in real numbers, and will be played in Tampa. One can only wonder if we will see the designation "Super Bowl L" or "Super Bowl C" or if they will be considered too timid in Logo Land. But I digress.

The death of Marty Glickman last week brought back a number of memories. In and around the New York area people recalled Glickman as voice of the Knicks and any number of other teams on New York radio sports. Across the nation, and indeed perhaps even across the world, Glickman's death brought back memories of the 1936 Olympic Games and the horror of Hitler's final solution. The latter was without a doubt more significant as it affected sport as well as the course of world history.

William Barry is a well-known, published local historian. Frannie Peabody was an early Maine AIDS activist, who established the Peabody House, a center dedicated to assisting individuals living with HIV/AIDS. The Papers contain research materials gathered for the writing of the book, "The AIDS Project : a history." They include correspondence, clippings, photographs, publications, research notes, drafts, and documents from Maine’s largest AIDS service organization.

Warren County’s lengthy rail heritage dates from the chartering of a small tramway from the boat landing to central Bowling Green in 1936, to the construction of a magnificent rail station in 1925, to cessation of passenger service in 1979. When private and federal monies enabled Bowling Green depot’s restoration in the mid-1990’s, many citizens professed a renewed interest in Warren County’s rail heritage. Bittersweet briefly discusses rail development in the United States and then explores the love-hate relationship that Bowling Green experienced with the L&N. Stonecutting in Adams county followed all the general developmental trends and stages exhibited by the craft in other parts of Pennsylvania. Adams county, nonetheless, evolved its unique approach to gravestone art, for rural early American stonecutters were by and large highly unique artistic individuals.

The earliest prominent stonecutters maintained high artistic standards as well as exhibiting a high degree of creativity. These were craftsmen of the Scots-Irish Bigham family of Marsh Creek and the Pennsylvania-German Meals family, centered at Bender's Cemetery, Butler township. An international ensemble of folklore scholars looks at varied ways in which national and ethnic groups have traditionally and creatively used imagined states of existence-some idealizations, some demonizations-in the construction of identities for themselves and for others. Drawing on oral traditions, especially as represented in traditional ballads, broadsides, and tale collections, the contributors consider fertile landscapes of the mind where utopias overflow with bliss and abundance, stereotyped national and ethnic caricatures define the lives of "others," nostalgia glorifies home and occupation, and idealized and mythological animals serve as cultural icons and guideposts to harmonious social life.

Scholars in folklore and anthropology are more directly involved in various aspects of medicine—such as medical education, clinical pastoral care, and negotiation of transcultural issues—than ever before. Old models of investigation that artificially isolated "folk medicine," "complementary and alternative medicine," and "biomedicine" as mutually exclusive have proven too limited in exploring the real-life complexities of health belief systems as they observably exist and are applied by contemporary Americans. "In Defense of Preservation" is the transcript of a presentation at the Gotham History Festival at the CUNY Graduate Center, October 6, 2001. The discussants argued that historic preservation is vital to New York City's economic and cultural health, and countered arguments that preservation was elitist and hindered the city's growth. Dorothy Minor discussed the legal basis for preservation and reviewed the Penn Central decision and other court cases. Anthony C. Wood discussed the history of historic preservation in New York. And Eric W. Allison presented the intersection of preservation with the liveable cities movement.

The author, a native Ghanaian who holds a Ph.D. from the University of Tennessee and teaches government at South Texas College, reports on an interesting study of human rights/human dignity conceptualizations among the Akan people of Ghana. It was a 3-2 final with Federov scoring the winner with 28 seconds left on the clock. This one, however, was special as it marked a milestone for one of the greatest professional coaches of any sport in any time. Scotty Bowman, currently the coach of the Detroit Red Wings, was behind the bench in his 2,000th NHL game on Friday night as Detroit beat Vancouver.
