Folk music is one of the most popular forms of music today; artists such as Mumford and Sons and the Carolina Chocolate Drops are giving new life to an age-old music. It was not until the 1950s that new popular interest in folk music began. Earlier, folk music was used by leftist organizations as a means to reach the masses. It assumed because of this history that many folk artists are sympathetic to the Left. Silk Road Traveler Identity Quest: Lesson Plan, Kitty Lam

History of Cultural Contact

In this lesson, students will explore intercultural contact in the Silk Road trade networks by examining the writings of Xuan Zang, a 7^th century Chinese Buddhist monk who made a pilgrimage to India to collect Buddhist texts. The text used in this exercise is Xuan Zang’s Record of the Western Regions, which was a text commissioned by the Tang Chinese Emperor. This text includes rich details of the communities Xuan Zang visited.

La Créole - A Journal of Creole History & Genealogy

The Louisiana Creole Research Association, Inc., known as LA Creole, was founded on August 21, 2004 as a New Orleans-based, non-profit family research and educational organization. Its purpose is to assist Creoles of Color in researching their ancestry, to educate the general public about Creole history and culture, and to celebrate the contributions and legacy of a unique, sometimes forgotten people. La Créole, the Association’s journal is published annually.

The Drink Of A Thousand Kisses: Coffeehouse Culture In 16th Century England, Derek A. Haas

Student Research

The purpose of this paper is to understand the history of coffeehouses in Early Modern England and how they affected the public sphere. Coffeehouses changed the way English citizens did business, socialized, and engaged in politics. At different points, coffee was opposed by different social orders, women, and even Charles II himself. The tiniest thing became one of the most controversial items of the 16th century.

Larry Brown was awarded the hat trick this week by the NCAA. For the third time in his college coaching career Brown is the head basketball coach at a university whose basketball program was found to have violated NCAA regulations. The first came in the early eighties at UCLA where his program was found to be guilty of getting “improper inducements” from UCLA boosters. The second came in the late eighties at Kansas where recruiting violations and improper use of travel funds were on the list of achievements
