History Theses & Dissertations
Spectacle and pageantry played an important role in the monarchies of Elizabeth I and James I of England. Generally pageants served reciprocal purposes. It provided a way to let the realm view the state of the monarch's health and allowed the monarch to impress his subjects with royal grandeur. Additionally, it served as a vehicle for the manifestation of the public's desires concerning the direction which the country might move with the accession of a new monarch. Also, civic pageants provide the historian with an indication of popular like or dislike of a sovereign. In this thesis, a considerable amount …

On September 22, 1949, Shirley Cupp, Irma Beisel, Frances Stuckey and Mr. Hilary Bufton Jr. met in a coffee shop in downtown Kansas City to incorporate the American Business Women’s Association (ABWA). Jean Fulkerson helped start The Kentucky Colonels Chapter on 3 June 1964 in Bowling Green, Kentucky. Twenty-six women met at Western Hills Restaurant and elected Linda Sidebottom as the first president. Besides providing professional development opportunities for local businesswomen, the Chapter gave scholarships to women furthering their education, and held social and recognition events throughout the year. Their newsletter, “The Colonelette,” was started in June 1964. Also included …

Economic conditions during the 1930s caused unprecedented problems for the American people. The most obvious feature of the Depression--high unemployment--was particularly discouraging since no group of workers was spared from the realities of hard times. After experiencing relatively prosperous and comfortable lives during the Twenties, thousands of professionals and service personnel joined blue-collar workers in soup lines and charity programs.
