The Development Of Cooperative Enterprises In Cache Valley 1865-1900, Joseph Carl Felix
The Development Of Cooperative Enterprises In Cache Valley 1865-1900, Joseph Carl Felix
Theses and Dissertations
As one studies the history of Cache Valley, he becomes increasingly aware of the presence of church-sponsored cooperative stores, farms, and mills, in every community in the valley. True, there are only scattered remains of a once rather extensive movement, but there is enough evidence to cause one to wonder what influence the cooperative enterprises had in the settlement of Cache Valley. This study has been made to determine the extent of this contribution and to preserve as much information as possible concerning a very important phase of the settlement days in Cache Valley.
This study includes only the period …
Latter-Day Saint Servicemen In The Philippine Islands: A Historical Study Of Their Religious Activities And Influences Resulting In The Official Organization Of The Church Of Jesus Christ Of Latter-Day Saints In The Philippines, Lowell Eliason Call
Theses and Dissertations
Though generally unheard of in the Western world and the United States prior to the Spanish-American War of 1898, the Filipino people have made some remarkable contributions to world leadership and world history. Frequently they have been considered a pagan and an ignorant people, although in objectively observing them one finds such a belief unfounded and even the reverse of that to be true. Progress which the republic has made during the last fifty years, since being liberated to develop liberties in religion, politics, and education, is phenomenal, even when compared with the United States period of evolution to her …
A Study Of The Nature Of And The Significance Of The Changes In The Revelations As Found In A Comparison Of The Book Of Commandments And Subsequent Editions Of The Doctrine And Covenants, Melvin Joseph Petersen
A Study Of The Nature Of And The Significance Of The Changes In The Revelations As Found In A Comparison Of The Book Of Commandments And Subsequent Editions Of The Doctrine And Covenants, Melvin Joseph Petersen
Theses and Dissertations
An observation of literature extant regarding the revelations accepted by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints as being divinely given through Joseph Smith, discloses that the field has not been probed very thoroughly. Many are the sermons and discourses preached from the pulpit by exegetes of Mormonism vindicating the book of Doctrine and Covenants as being authentic. Few, however, have made a study of the history, origin, and development of this book.
From outside of the church criticisms have arisen concerning certain changes, additions, and omissions made in the revelations as first written by Joseph Smith. When confronted …
History Of Winter Quarters, Nebraska, 1846-1848, Ernest Widtsoe Shumway
History Of Winter Quarters, Nebraska, 1846-1848, Ernest Widtsoe Shumway
Theses and Dissertations
The Indian agent, the trapper, or the citizens of small Iowa townships were undoubtedly startled to see such a large movement of people and wagons across the state of Iowa. It was the winter and early spring of 1846. The onlooker would have seen men, women, and children muffled against the wintry blast, walking or riding in covered wagons and lesser vehicles. Somehow these people were different from the occasional companies bound for points West. Many were ill equipped. Many had a look of gentility, or as the frontiersman might say, a "citified look." They kept to themselves and often …

Brigham Cecil Gates: Composer, Director, Teacher Of Music, Lyneer Charles Smith
Brigham Cecil Gates: Composer, Director, Teacher Of Music, Lyneer Charles Smith
Theses and Dissertations
Every now and then, in the realms of science and art, we learn that some especially striking figure, who captures our attention, is from Utah. The achievements of the sons and daughters of the Utah pioneers reflect the substantial character of the work of the men and women who laid the foundation of Utah.
This foundation was composed of material gathered from every worthy purpose engulfing character and cultural expression of the people. Among other accomplishments, Utah has had a notable development in musical art. Her achievements have not been a result of extraordinary circumstances, but from the long and …
A Historical Study Of The Theatre Of The Mother Lode During The Gold Rush Period, Berton Everett Trulsson
A Historical Study Of The Theatre Of The Mother Lode During The Gold Rush Period, Berton Everett Trulsson
University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations
Many events of the gold rush have been adequately narrated in numerous books and articles. The succeeding pages in this thesis will recall, historically by topic, important incidents of one phase of that period never before treated as a separate study that phase is the theatre of the Mother Lode region.
The argonauts of the Mother Lode wanted to be entertained and could pay for it. Many preferred the saloon and gamboling hall, but the theatre did not languish because of this, and in fact, developed in some instances directly out of the saloons and fandango halls.
It was the …
The Negro In California Before 1890, A. Odell Thurman
The Negro In California Before 1890, A. Odell Thurman
University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations
Because so little has been written concerning the Negro in California and because the dynamic and romantic sequences in the development of this country have always interested me, I have become interested in knowing what part the Negro, free and slave, played in this panorama of events. Were there Negroes with early expeditions? To what extent did they migrate to the West when "gold fever" had become a nation-wide epidemic? Did they find gold? Where did they settle? What did they do? What difficulty did they encounter politically, socially, and economically? These are questions that have filled my mind, and …

The Magnitude Of The Fast Offerings Paid In The Stakes Of The Church Of Jesus Christ Of Latter-Day Saints, 1916-1936, H. Lester Petersen
Theses and Dissertations
The problem of this thesis may be stated in four questions: (1) To what extent are "Fast Offerings" paid by the membership of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints? (2) What changes, if any, have occurred in the amounts of these fast offerings paid over the years 1916 to 1936, inclusive? (3) What differences and similarities appear to exist in the amounts of fast offerings paid in the several stakes of the Church? (4) How do the rates of change in the amounts of fast offerings paid during these years compare with the rates of change in the …
The Development Of Mexican Music, Edith M. K. Tibbets
The Development Of Mexican Music, Edith M. K. Tibbets
University of the Pacific Theses and Dissertations
Perhaps no country at the present time has a richer unexplored fount of folk music than has Mexico. In fact. her rich store of musical culture, like a vast mine scarcely worked entitles her to a position among those peoples whose folk music has long been firmly established.
Finding the source material on the music of Mexico for the most part, fragmentary and scattered, the writer decided to do serious research in translating from the early Spanish writers, and in reading the chronicles of the travelers of that early period, as well as the historical writings and the legendary lore …
Missionary Activities Among The Cherokee Indians, 1757-1838, William Ward Crouch
Missionary Activities Among The Cherokee Indians, 1757-1838, William Ward Crouch
Masters Theses
Introduction: Any historical account of early Indian missions must of necessity find its background in the prevailing political and religious conditions in Europe at the time of the discovery, the exploratlon, and the colonization of the American continent. At the end of the fifteenth century the Commercial Revolution broke upon Europe, and the discovery of America came as a direct result of this revolution. Throughout the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries the Catholic nations of southern and southwestern Europe were exploring and colonizing parts of both North and South America, excepting the Atlantic coast of North America from Florida to the …
