Launching through the Surf Traveling Exhibit

Panel 19 features information about the digital archives created to preserve the history of the Pacific City Dory Fleet. It also documents some of the creative and scholarly work associated with the project done by Linfield students and faculty. It is the third of three exhibit panels that chronicle the Launching through the Surf project.

Launching through the Surf Traveling Exhibit

Panel 18 depicts the development of the production of Kickin’ Sand and Tellin’ Lies, a play based on the oral histories collected during the project. The play was performed in November 2012 at the Marshall Theatre on the Linfield College campus in McMinnville and at the Kiawanda Community Center in Pacific City. It is the second of three exhibit panels that chronicle the Launching through the Surf project.

Incorporating drawings and photographs from the Tom Donohue Collection, panel 14 documents the process of building the Memorial Wall at Cape Kiwanda, as well as its dedication in 2009.

Launching through the Surf Traveling Exhibit

Like many fishing communities, the Pacific City dory community honors its fleet, asks for bountiful and safe fishing for the coming season, and remembers those who have died during the year at the annual Blessing of the Fleet. The ceremony is held on the beach the first Saturday in June. In a similar vein, the community celebrates the dories and honors those who made significant contributions to the fleet and the community during the Memorial Wall Ceremony. This observance normally takes place during Dory Days. Panel 13 describes both of these events.

Panel 12 details the intriguing processes of launching and landing a dory in the surf, including a brief description of the important skill of reading the waves. The panel incorporates contemporary photographs by Tyrone Marshall and Laura Davis, quotations from dory fishers interviewed as part of the project, and an excerpt from a 1997 Oregonian article.

Exhibit panel 11 describes the procedure for turning oars for a dory. Partners Paul Hanneman and Terry Learned have crafted the Cape Kiwanda Wood Products dory oars since the early 1960s. During the spring of 2012, project collaborator Tyrone Marshall photographed the process.

Building partnerships with community-oriented research centers and departments is one of the best ways to develop an institutional repository into a valued community resource. Kickin' Sand and Tellin' Lies: The Play

This document is the prompt book created by stage manager Jennifer Layton for the Linfield College Theatre's November 2012 production of Kickin’ Sand and Tellin’ Lies by Jackson B. Miller and Christopher Forrer. The prompt book includes ground plans with blocking diagrams that depict the movements of the actors throughout the play, notations that indicate the timing for lighting, sound, and multimedia cues called by the stage manager during performances, and administrative materials such as rehearsal schedules, lists of stage properties and costume pieces, and other documents related to the process of creating the production.

The Keck Summer Collaborative Research Program provides opportunities for Linfield College students and faculty to conduct research on issues related to the Pacific Northwest, and to bring the research findings back into the classroom within the subsequent academic year. Students partner with faculty to conduct research and present their work to other students, Linfield staff and faculty, and community members during a series of brown bag lunches. Cassidy Davis and Jennifer Layton conducted research with Tyrone Marshall and gave this presentation during the summer of 2012.
