Finding aid only for Manuscripts Collection 25. Correspondence related to travel of Elizabeth Moseley Woods (1865-1967). Also includes Woods family correspondence, 100th birthday congratulations, Woods and Hall families genealogies, a household account book kept by Woods on a stay in Paris, 1901, and a script of a 1938 radio broadcast related to a South American cruise taken by Woods. Also includes clippings related to the retirement of Dr. John D. Woods as editor of the "Glasgow Times." An original and two copies of 1862 Civil letters (Confederate) are also included.

ACTUP/ Maine, founded in 1990, was a chapter of the national organization, ACT UP (AIDS Coalition to Unleash Power) that focused on AIDS issues. The goals of the organization were the empowerment of people with AIDS and the establishment of an AIDS Resource Center. The organization emphasized direct action in communities and an open democratic process within the group. The Archives holds organizational papers, books, photos, promotional materials, correspondence and publications, plus a significant number of publications/papers from ACT-UP chapters in the US and abroad. Description:

Joseph Porter was a ship captain of Freeport, Maine. The Papers primarily document the travels of his ship, the Eliza Ann, in the years 1809-1812, although they span the years 1810-1924. They contain 55 original documents, and other materials, including correspondence, accounts, cargo lists, crew lists, receipt for wages, port forms, a Bill of Health and a Roll of Equipage. Also included are documentation on Porter's ship America in 1815, and the building of a corvett (vessel of war) in 1816.

It is astonishing, when one thinks of it, that a series of children's books is so crammed with law. Not one of the seven Harry Potter novels fails to explore difficult issues law, interpretation and especially the relationship of the state to the individual. From practically the first page of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone (SS) we ponder issues of child custody, fosterage and adoption;1 before Harry even gets to Hogwarts we have heard about crime and punishment,2 legal control over the use of magic,3 monetary policy,4 and Wizarding government.5 Before the series is complete we have witnessed five …

Abdel Ross Wentz (1883-1976) of the Lutheran Theological Seminary at Gettysburg joked about his small physical stature but he was a giant of American Lutheranism, noted religious historian and theological educator, and exemplar of a great generation of church leaders working in national and world arenas from the 1920s through the 1950s. This biography by his son, himself a historian and seminary professor and president, traces Wentz’s life from childhood in Lineboro, Maryland through his significant career in Gettysburg and much wider circles to his retirement near the Seminary campus. This special issue of the Journal of Colonialism and Colonial History consists of a forum of innovative ways to consider and reappraise the founding of Britain’s Sierra Leone colony. It originated with a conversation among the two of us and Pamela Scully – all having research interests touching on Sierra Leone in that period – noting that the recent historical inquiry into the origins of this colony had begun to reach an important critical mass. Research & Publications

Black college students in the 1960s and 1970s struggled to gain access to the university extracurriculum, particularly in spaces dominated by the Greek system and Black females struggled against prevailing assumptions of traditional white femininity. Efforts by Black female students at UCLA to participate in the university spirit squads became enmeshed with broader efforts to create a campus Black Studies Department and the growing campus debate around Black Power.

The Rev. William Wyndham Malet visited South Carolina in the summer of 1862. He left his vicarage at Ardeley, Hertfordshire, England, to come to South Carolina to tell his sister, Mrs. Plowden C. J. Weston (formerly Emily Frances Esdaile), of a death in their family. While in South Carolina he spent the summer in Conwayboro (Conway) at Snow Hill, the war time refuge of Plowden C. J. Weston (Lt. Gov. of S.C. 1862-1864). Weston had evacuated his home, Hagley Plantation, on the lower Waccamaw River and moved his wife and approximately forty of his slaves upriver to Snow Hill in …
