The Cummings family of Old Orchard Beach, Maine, ran a guest house from 1923 until 1993. Register in which guests signed themselves in or were signed in by staff at the Cummings Guest House, 110 Portland Ave., Old Orchard Beach, Maine. Includes signatures of family members who attended reunions after the Guest House ceased operation.

Local History

A panoramic photograph, taken from the Cleveland Hotel, captures downtown Spartanburg, S.C. in 1918, and in particular, the 3rd Liberty Loan parade, with the 27th Division of the U.S Army marching down Main Street. Numerous downtown landmarks are visible, including the towers of Wofford College, the spire of Central Methodist Church, Cleveland Law Range, the court house of the period, Andrews Building, Belk Hudson Building, the Daniel Morgan Statue and Morgan Square, the intersection of Main and Church Streets, the original City Hall and the Spartanburg Herald Journal Building.

In this letter, dated to approximately 1916, Abbie writes to Mrs. Tibbets about several topics, including her teaching job, attending an exhibition, seeing the Emperor pass on the street, tea services, and describes in detail her accommodations. She says that she is very happy in Japan now that she is more used to the climate.

Cora writes to Mrs. Tibbets about her vacation trip from where she was staying in Tokyo to several different places around Japan. She writes of her stay in a Japanese style hotel. She also writes about the scenery around her, and about how long it takes her by rail to get to her travel destinations. She also writes of a traveling companion named George, and how she has invited Abbie to come and visit her and meet George.

In this letter, Cora writes to Mrs. Tibbets about life in Japan. She writes about the climate, and how she finds she cannot do as much due to the "enervating" nature of the climate there. She describes a "sword walking" ceremony, in which one climbs a ladder made of swords. She then writes of the beginnings of spring in Japan and how there is a fair coming to Japan, "the largest ever held in Japan."

In this letter, Cora writes to Mrs. Tibbets to thank her for the Christmas gifts. She describes the table that they set for a traditional western-style Christmas. They invited a Japanese couple, who were described by Cora to be very fascinated with the Christmas decor. She also tells Mrs. Tibetts about her coming vacation with George to Oshima, as there is a volcano there that they are intending to climb.

Date of photograph is unknown but tintypes flourished in popularity in the 1860s and 1870s and the clothing of the figures suggests a similar time period.

This photograph, taken 1869 at White Sulphur Springs, West Virginia, is the last photograph of Robert E. Lee before his death in 1870. Seen by some as a symbol of early reconciliation between North and South, the image features Lee (seated, 2nd from left) alongside George Peabody (seated, 3rd from left). Peabody was a British-American industrialist and philanthropist who supported the Union during the war, but was fêted by fellow guests at the Springs in 1869 for his postwar generosity and investment in the Southern education system. In this student copybook dating from circa 1862, the writer transcribes the ballad of Susanna Cox in both German and English. It recounts the trial and execution of a woman named Susanna Cox who killed her child, conceived out of wed-lock. The work copied in the book appears to be based on the Louis Storck translation of the ballad by Johann Philip Gombert.
