Winferd Merl Williams was born March 28, 1895 in Winfield, Kansas. Winferd married Grace McBee (b. 1897 - d. 1961) on June 6, 1920. He attended school in Winfield and later graduated from Phillips University in Enid, Oklahoma. He taught industrial arts at Pittsburg High School, and then ran a farm implement dealership until World War II. During the war years, Winferd served on the East Coast and had a short stint in England. After the war, Winferd and Grace ran an antique business from their home in Pittsburg, …

Bess Cole Spiva was born in 1901, in Galena, Kansas to George Newton Spiva and Bessie Tamblyn Spiva. Her family soon moved to Joplin, Missouri where they stayed. She graduated from Monticello College in Illinois in 1921. In 1923, she married Leroy K. Timmons (1899-1954) and they moved to Pittsburg in 1928. In 1951 she started the Spiva Emergency Loan Fund which became the Spiva Scholarship. In 1966 The Timmons Chapel of All Faiths was built and donated to Pittsburg State University by Mrs. Timmons. Newspaper clippings, club bulletins, membership lists, obituaries of members and other miscellaneous materials relating to the Schlanger Park Civic Club.

Schlanger Park in Pittsburg, Kansas, was created by land donated from A. H. Schlanger in 1929. The movement to turn the land into a park led to the creation of the Schlanger Park Civic Club, which was city federated in 1935.

The Schlanger Park Civic Club Scrapbook is primarily comprised of newspaper clippings, club bulletins, membership lists, obituaries of members and other miscellaneous materials relating to the Schlanger Park Civil Club. It is unknown who created the scrapbook.

Nicholas Smith was born in Malden, Massachusetts in 1926. He attended the University of Maine from 1946 to 1950 and receiving his BA in American History. He later attended Columbia University for his MA in Medieval/European history. Smith was passionate about the conservation of Native American history and the rights of the communities he worked closely with for well over 50 years.

While working with several of the tribes in Maine and the surrounding areas he was able to compile the largest computerized bibliography of the Wabanaki peoples (WABIB). The WABIB has the most complete source of materials pertaining to …

Ann (Meats) Long was born in 1836 in Burghill, Herefordshire, United Kingdom. She came with her family to the United States around 1848. Ann married McHenry Long and they lived in Benton, Missouri until her death in 1900. Her granddaughter, Lillian Eureka Long was born in 1905 in Cass County, Missouri. Lillian attended the Kansas Teachers College of Pittsburg (now Pittsburg State University) and afterwards worked as a teacher in Independence, Kansas. Lillian married Harold P. David Kendall was born to David E. “Al” and Lottie Kendall in 1929 in Pittsburg, Kansas. In 1933, his father opened a small grocery store (Al’s Grocery) on 112 E Williams St, where Hughes Hall on the PSU campus is now located. The George B. Hugo Correspondence consists of his book Socialism: The Creed of Despair and 25 letters related to its publication.

George B. Hugo was born in 1866 in Massachusetts to French immigrants. Hugo married Jennie Saulsbury in 1888 in Boston and in 1893 a daughter they named Ruth was born. In Boston, Massachusetts, George worked as a merchant. In 1909 he published his book, Socialism: The Creed of Despair. The Clara Stowe Letters consists of four letters from Clara F. Stowe to Elmere W. White (her future husband), from 1878 to 1881.

Clara Florence Stowe was born in 1859 in Lawrence, Kansas. Elmere Warren White was born in 1855 in Vermont and came to Kansas with his parents during his childhood. Clara and Elmere became acquainted and courted, marrying 1883. They had one daughter, Carolyn (1886-1979). For most of his life, Elmere worked as a rancher. In 1920 the family moved to Donna, Texas. Elmere died in 1937 and Clara in 1941.

The Elmer E. Hashbarger photographs consist of several albumen print photographs of Hashbarger’s work as a cattle driver.

Elmer Ellsworth Hashbarger was born in Richland, Ohio in 1866 to Andrew and Mary Hashbarger. His family eventually moved to Kincaid, Kansas. Harshbarger worked as a cattle driver in the Oklahoma panhandle. In Beaver, Oklahoma, he married Ida Scott, a marriage that produced four children. In his later years he moved back to the township of Rich, east of Kincaid. Elmer died in 1935.

This collection consists of personal correspondence, newspaper clippings, film negatives, photos and other miscellaneous materials related to the Theys Family.

The collection is largely centered on the family of Helen R. (Cole) Theys, who was born on January 26, 1922 in Frontenac, Kansas. She married Emile Theys on September 1, 1941. They were married for 26 years until his death on October 2, 1967. Emile and Helen had two children, Sharon K. Theys, and Richard Theys. She was very active in her community until she passed away on June 30, 2017.

Berthenia M. (Shook) Hanlon was born on the 7^th of May 1842 in Green County, Wisconsin. She married John B. Hanlon (1842-1911) in 1868. Together they had seven children, and after moving several times, they eventually settled in Pittsburg, Kansas. Berthenia would pass away in 1904. There are some variations in the spelling of the last name Hanlon, some family members either changed the spelling of their last name or misspelled on the …

Earl R. Ward (1902-1941) was born in Harvey, Kansas. Ward graduated from the Kansas Teachers College of Pittsburg (now Pittsburg State University) in 1927, and taught in several Kansas schools, including in Rosalia and Auburn.

Ethel Schwab Smither (1893-1969) was born near Cherokee, Kansas, the eldest of seven children. She and her husband Elbert raised three children. Smither was always interested in writing, possibly using it as an escape during difficult times like the Great Depression. Her interest in writing led her to become a member of the Kansas Authors Society. By the time of her death in 1969, Smither had a large collection of completed poems and a typewritten manuscript, The Yielding Years, which was her only novel. The Yielding …

The Edward Skelton diary consists of daily entries from January 1^st, to November 14^th, 1875 with purchases and expenses registered from 1878-1879. Most diary entries mention daily farm work, hangouts, the weather and Sunday School. The entries are short and also describe daily activities of plowing, cutting timber, going to the market, and visiting the neighbors.

Edward Skelton was born in 1854 and lived in Labette County, Kansas with his parents. Edward worked as a farmer and was married to Artie Storey in 1880. Edward Skelton died in 1915.

A personal diary of Pauline Hibbard, written throughout the latter half of 1919, when she was 14 years old. The diary discusses her weekly activities during the summer and school year, such as church, swimming, ice cream eating, and football games.

Pauline Lang Hibbard was born March 3, 1905 in Cherryvale, Kansas to Sherburne and Dixon Hibbard. When she was 25, she became a school teacher in Cherryvale, Kansas. The Pittsburg Bicentennial-Centennial was the celebration of the 200^th anniversary of the United States and the 100^th anniversary of the city of Pittsburg, Kansas in 1976. The celebration was spearheaded by Edward T. McNally of McNally Pittsburg Manufacturing Corporation. He said the objective was “to celebrate our past in a unique town and instill a sense of pride in the past and the present.” A feature of the Centennial celebration was the Pittsburg Hall of Fame. The collection consists of a series of interviews conducted from 1974 to 1980 by students for a course (IDL 105, Women in Maine: An Autobiographical Approach) taught by Maryann Hartman in the department of Speech and Communications at the University of Maine. Students asked a variety of informants for their opinions about the present and future roles of women in Maine. Each informant discussed this in the context of their own lives and experiences, therefore the individual interviews cover a wide range of topics. Albert Lincoln "Bert" Call, 1866-1963, was a professional photographer in Dexter, Maine, from 1887 to 1953. He started as an apprentice to A.G. Fassett and shortly thereafter purchased Fassett's studio. Call was a portrait photographer but was also known for his artistic photographs of the northern Maine woods. Call also served as the official photographer for the Bangor and Aroostook Railroad's publication, "In the Maine Woods," from 1915 to 1931.

The collection includes 3,376 photographs dating between 1914 and 1939 of outdoor scenes of mountains, lakes, woods and streams in the northern part of Maine. Included are shots from the …

The project "Notre Vie, Notre Travail-Our Life, Our Work" was initiated by the Lewiston Western Older Citizens Council by Diane Brown who worked there. Funded by the Maine Humanities Council, this project involved a series of bilingual interviews utilizing family albums to stimulate discussion about Franco-American culture, particularly as it pertained to work. That is, it concerned the following: how work reflected cultural values; work ethic; work/occupation patterns; how work was integrated with family life (or interfered with it); the history of work patterns in the Lewiston area, and about Franco-American culture and family life in general.

Interviewee ages range from 8 to 88 years old. Topics discussed include costumes; trick or treating; school and parties; Halloween treats; Finnish Easter; pranks; pumpkins/ jack o’ lanterns; Miscellaneous manuscript materials generated by the Halloween Project include letter describing Halloween in Scotland, interview questions, newspaper clippings and various items having to do with Halloween.

Our Neighborhood Club of Old Town, Maine, was organized in 1893 and federated in the Maine Federation of Women's Clubs in 1901. The group sought out the collective betterment of each member and the community by doing charity work. They often donated gifts, money, and time to hospitals, veterans organizations, and cancer research.

The Our Neighborhood Club papers collection consists of club program booklets, scrapbooks, photographs, as well as club meeting minutes and attendance. The collection does have papers that span between 1908 to 2007, however, the collection primarily focuses on club materials during the 1960s through the 1990s.

Welton P. Farrow was born in Tryon, Prince Edward Island, Canada, on December 10, 1898 with his twin brother, Harold J. Farrow. In 1938, after 18 years of living apart, they visited each other in Waterville, Maine, and at the request of a researcher named D. C. Rife from the University of Ohio, they invited pairs of twins to meet together in order to conduct research on the subjects of twins.
