This course will introduce the student to key authors and texts in the history of modern western philosophy, from the 17th and 18th centuries--Descartes, Locke, Berkeley, and Hume. The focus will be on metaphysics (what exists) and epistemology (how we know, what knowledge is and what we know); universal human identity (what am I? and what makes me the same person?); what some philosophers thought the role of God is in metaphysics and epistemology. Included will be historical contexts of the philosophers studied, and their religious claims.
Woven By Culture: A Comparative Study Of Traditional Dress Across Regions And The Societal Forces Behind Fashion, James T. Granger
Woven By Culture: A Comparative Study Of Traditional Dress Across Regions And The Societal Forces Behind Fashion, James T. Granger
Senior Theses
This study attempts to examine how societal influences that different countries have obtained from years past affect their traditional fashion. By sketching 200 traditional female dresses from every sovereign country in the world, I have taken the time to analyze and create depictions of their sociological and stylistic choices. I have chosen to examine the countries of Cambodia, Republic of Congo, Croatia, Cuba, Finland, Iran, Kazakhstan, Mongolia, Panama, and Tonga as they all represent different regions of the globe. Breaking down each of their dresses into their specific garments and accessories is essential to better understand the culture and the …

A Quarter Century Of Scholarship: Trends In The St Mary’S Law Scholar’S Journal, Trenton Boudreaux

This project catalogs the trends of the articles published in The Scholar: St Mary’s Law Review on Race and Social Justice. Over its 25-year history, The Scholar has published 26 volumes discussing issues related specifically to minority and social justice issues. The project catalogs the topics covered in the volumes, and explores this data for historical trends. The project posts these results on the St. Mary’s Law School History page and provides historical context for some of the topics covered. This information provides a valuable resource for researchers into The Scholar as a publication.

Getting Engaged: Public Engagement Quiz For “Unity In Action” At Saaacam, Terry Pohl
Capstone Projects
I developed the Getting Engaged Capstone Project in partnership with the San Antonio African American Community Archive and Museum (SAAACAM) and their new Museum. The primary purpose of this project is to provide the “Unity in Action,” room, the first exhibit in the final hall of the SAAACAM Museum, with materials to support its cause. This project is dedicated to doing virtually what the “Unity in Action” room is trying to do in person – to send the audience out into the world with a tangible project they can participate in that will help create positive change in the community …

“Plenty Of Heart And Plenty Of Hope”: An Analysis Of Social And Historical Implications In Post-Wwii Western Musical Films, Katelyn N. Lister
Selected Honors Theses
World War II had a profound and significant impact on American life and culture. Hollywood and film production was one area that was notably different after the war with themes and settings that promoted patriotism and American values being seen more frequently. Film lends itself to analysis due to its recorded and preserved nature that allows audiences today to view the same thing that audiences in the early 1950s were seeing, albeit with a different worldview. Western movies made in the late 1940s and early 1950s perfectly encapsulate the feelings of most Americans during the postwar period. Additionally, a new …

The Two Men Named Perez Andrews Of Oxford County, Maine, Kathrine C. Aydelott
The Two Men Named Perez Andrews Of Oxford County, Maine, Kathrine C. Aydelott
Faculty Publications
This article resolves a long-standing genealogical confusion between two men named Perez (or Peres) Andrews, whose overlapping names, lifespans, and locations in 19th-century Maine have led to persistent misidentification in published genealogies and family trees. Drawing on extensive primary source research—including land records, censuses, court cases, and vital records—this study reconstructs the distinct lives of Perez Andrews (b. ca. 1767) of Bakerstown, Minot, Buckfield, and Bradford, Maine; and Peres Andrews (b. 1797) of No. 2 Plantation and Sumner. The paper not only separates their identities and lineages but also probes possible familial connections among the Andrews families of western Maine. …
Thibaudeau’S Paradox: A Revolutionary's Complicity In Napoleon’S Empire, Krystal C. Tan
Thibaudeau’S Paradox: A Revolutionary's Complicity In Napoleon’S Empire, Krystal C. Tan
Armstrong Undergraduate Journal of History
This essay explores Antoine-Claire Thibaudeau, a revolutionary who opposed Napoleon's autocratic ambitions yet actively contributed to his empire. Through Thibaudeau's memoirs and other sources, it argues that his ideological resistance gave way to reluctant collaboration, driven by the futility of opposition. His story reveals the complexities of dissent and compliance within Napoleon’s rule, challenging the notion of uniform elite support for the empire.

Napoleon’S Playbook: The Political Strategies Behind His Empire And Legacy, Manjot Gill
Napoleon’S Playbook: The Political Strategies Behind His Empire And Legacy, Manjot Gill
Armstrong Undergraduate Journal of History
Napoleon Bonaparte’s rule from 1799 to 1814 exemplifies a masterclass in power politics, characterized by three interwoven strategies: institutional reforms, the synthesis of revolutionary ideals with traditional customs, and the strategic use of propaganda. By examining these strategies, this paper argues that Napoleon’s governance not only secured his authority in post- revolutionary France but also laid the groundwork for the mechanisms of modern authoritarian regimes. His legacy endures in the centralization of power, selective legal reforms, and propaganda techniques employed by modern regimes to shape public perception and suppress dissent, underscoring the relevance of Napoleon’s blueprint for power in understanding …

Colonial Legacies And Co-Ethnic Repatriation: A Comparative Analysis Of Germany And South Korea, Eunjin Yong
Armstrong Undergraduate Journal of History
The paper examines the contrasting approaches of Germany and Korea in handling co-ethnic repatriation during the early Cold War era (1940-1950s). Focusing on Germany’s Federal Expellee Law of 1953 and Korea’s absence of formal policies for Korean-Chinese immigrants, the paper illustrates how colonial histories influenced their respective ethnic projects and provides a nuanced understanding of how repatriation policies are shaped by historical and political contexts.

Occasional Papers on Religion in Eastern Europe
Medical chaplaincy is an important component in many countries, as it helps to ensure a holistic approach to treatment, taking into account the spiritual needs of patients. The relevance of this direction was due to the invasion of russian troops on the territory of Ukraine back in 2014, and in the conditions of a full-scale war in Ukraine, the role of medical chaplaincy has increased significantly. This article reveals the experience of the Volyn Orthodox Theological Academy (Lutsk, Ukraine) in training medical chaplains, which was the first in Ukraine, responding to social challenges, in particular health care institutions, to develop …

Lutsk-Zhytomyr Roman Catholic Diocese During The First World War: Charitable And Socio-Political Activities, Olga Bilobrovets, Oleh Sokolovskyi
Occasional Papers on Religion in Eastern Europe
The activities of the Roman Catholic Church were an important factor in preserving and reviving the national identity of the Polish minority in Volyn under the conditions of the Russification and discriminatory policies of the Russian autocracy during the First World War. The Catholic clergy actively worked to aid the Polish population and refugees affected by the war. During the First World War, the Roman Catholic clergy of the Lutsk-Zhytomyr diocese, together with the majority of the Polish population in Ukraine, provided significant aid to war victims and refugees from the Kingdom of Poland and Galicia. Catholic churches collected funds …
