U.S. Senate And House Perspectives On Missile Defense Systems Opposed By Russia And China, Constance Valarie Baroudos
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
The United States and its allies and partners have deployed three missile defense systems to protect against Iranian and North Korean missile threats: the European Phased Adaptive Approach, Terminal High Altitude Area Defense, and Ground-based Missile Defense. Russia and China oppose these systems because they view them as undermining their strategic interests. The purpose of the present study was to better understand the perspectives of Senate and House Armed Services Committee HASC members about the three missile defense systems in congressional hearings. The three models of the congressional behavior model, the preference, simple party, and asymmetric categories, and neorealism and …

Past And Progress: Producing History At Chicago's 1933-34 World's Fair, Cate Liabraaten
Dissertations
During the country’s worst economic crisis, the Great Depression, Chicago hosted an event that presented a vision for the future. The 1933-34 Century of Progress Exposition was Chicago’s second world’s fair, important for revitalizing the local economy as well as encouraging optimism for a better future. While the fair’s theme officially focused on scientific and technological progress and was intended to be forward-looking, several exhibits dwelt on the past.
Study of these historic-themed exhibits reveals that by featuring Abraham Lincoln, Fort Dearborn, Jean Baptiste Point Du Sable, and a replica colonial village, Americans looked to their shared past to make …

Contagion, Causality, And Circumspection In A Late-Mamluk Digest Of Natural Philosophy, Joseph Leonardo Vignone
History Faculty Scholarship
Like many men born to scholarly families at the turn of the fifteenth century, ʿAbd Allāh Ibn Ayyūb al-Qādirī moved from Damascus to Cairo as a young adult to pursue a career in law. Though this legal career soon foundered, Ibn Ayyūb gained a reputation in Cairo for perfectly embodying the pietistic and professional ideals of the Islamic learned elite, or ulama. In this article, I introduce this hitherto unstudied figure of the late Mamluk era with reference to his treatise on a major scholarly debate of his day: the extent to which natures, or the elemental composition of celestial …

Richard H. Shryock’S “Empiricism Versus Rationalism In American Medicine, 1650-1950”: A Commentary, Michael A. Flannery
Libraries Professional Work
Shryock's analysis of medical progress outlines the transition from crude empiricism and dogmatic rationalism to scientific empiricism. This shift, though non-linear, advanced medicine through controlled experiments, fostering breakthroughs like penicillin. Scientific empiricism improved public health and influenced the return to systemic concepts, particularly through genetic medicine and chronic disease research.

In The Name Of The People: From Thai-Style Democracy To Thailism Democracy, Qiang Zhang
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
Existing studies have often situated Thailand within the context of the global middle class's retreat from democracy to understand democratization in Thailand. However, this approach fails to account adequately for the oscillating behavior of the Thai middle class between support for and opposition to democracy. This study argues that analyses of democratization benchmarked against Western democracy have long ignored changes in power structures and ideological discourses within Thailand's conservative forces. Therefore, this study undertakes a longitudinal analysis of Thai-style democracy, which has featured an anti-democratic face since 1932. By analyzing the discourses of conservative forces in three different historical periods—1932-1957, …

Employing both quantitative and qualitative methodologies, the research evaluates the demographic profiles, behaviors, motivations, and satisfaction levels of young Chinese tourists in Thai homestays, primarily through descriptive analysis. Findings show that security and hospitality are the top factors influencing these tourists’ decisions to …

Human Right Protection Of Stateless Children In Thailand: A Study Of Laws And Policies, Huiwen Fu
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
The issue of stateless children is a long-standing social problem in Thailand. Before the 21st century, Thailand's treatment of stateless children had gone through several reforms, and these shifts were reflected in Thai law and policy. After the 2000s, stateless children gradually came into the limelight, and the plight of stateless children received attention both within Thailand and internationally. This research studies Thailand's laws and policies on the protection of stateless children. It compares Thailand's laws and policies on stateless children in the 1980s, 1990s, and 2000s and analyzes the domestic and international factors that contributed to the improvement of …

Romanticizing Same-Sex Love In Thai Bl Series: A Case Study Of My School President, Die Yang
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
This paper examines the romanticized representation of same-sex love relationships in Thai BL series through a case study of the Thai television series My School President. It is found that the series, despite its theme of same-sex love, still presents traditional gender stereotypes, with character images and gender roles displaying obvious traditional gender traits. Tinn and Gun display traditional masculine and feminine traits, with Tinn portraying strength and decisiveness, and Gun portraying gentleness and dependence, respectively. Through a romanticized narrative approach, the drama emphasizes the characters' deep affection and mutual support, however, this idealized portrayal can lead to viewers' misconceptions …

More Than An Icon: Taking Shirley Chisholm At Her Word, Marissa Jackson Sow
Law Faculty Publications
Shirley Anita St. Hill Chisholm is an American hero, one whose legacy and likeness have achieved iconic status within popular political culture, particularly as women have increasingly sought elected office. In 2019 in her home state of New York, Governor Andrew Cuomo created a state park in her honor. Several months earlier, New York City mayor Bill de Blasio’s administration had announced the creation of a monument in Chisholm’s honor in Brooklyn’s Prospect Park. Both sites incorporate and rely on both the visual depictions of Chisholm that have become political iconography—the Congresswoman’s dark brown face and glasses centered by a …

Movements And Monuments: Student Movements For “Democracy” In 1973 And 2020 And Public Monuments In Thailand, Gil Diaz Turingan
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
"Thai democracy" is usually defined from the statist perspective. It is frequently associated with the bureaucratic elite, military, capitalists, middle class, and the monarchy. This qualitative historical study aims to explain the definition and development of Thai democracy using a different lens—a viewpoint of Thailand's 1973 and 2020 student movements and public monuments. It follows the historical research design and analyzes historical accounts to understand the installation, purpose, symbol, meaning, and transformation of the Democracy Monument, the Constitution Monuments, replicas of the Democracy Monument, the 14th of October 1973 Memorial, and the Victory Monument. Through student demonstrations, protesters transformed these …

In 1219 Francis of Assisi left the army of the Fifth Crusade with whom he had traveled to Egypt to preach the Christian faith before the Sultan Malik al-Kamil. This well-known encounter has long been remembered as a model for interreligious understanding and coexistence. For example, Pope Francis described it as an example of ecumenical outreach when marking its eighth centenary. Medievalists also have tended to approach this event as representing the intended model for peaceful evangelization within Francis’s order. From this perspective, the many Franciscan friars who preached crusading or collected tithes to support campaigns, who served as inquisitors …
Women's Empowerment Through Strength Sports—And Its Limits, Alison Clark Efford
Women's Empowerment Through Strength Sports—And Its Limits, Alison Clark Efford
History Faculty Research and Publications
This historical case study demonstrates that the purpose of a program of strength training affects whether it will empower women. The Turnverein or Turners was a German American organization that combined physical training, ethnic pride, and civic engagement. From the 1880s to the 1920s, it was at the forefront of promoting women’s exercise in the United States, including strength training with weighted clubs, dumbbells, and apparatuses. Woman Turners seized on physical training to challenge patriarchal power structures. They found joy in exertion, achievement, and comradery, while contesting the notion that to be feminine meant to be weak. Yet male Turners …

Birth Of A Narrative: Santa Anna Satanized On The Silver Screen, Eddie Anthony Paniagua Jr.
Capstone Projects
“Birth of a Narrative” is a documentary project looking at the history of how former President of Mexico, Antonio López de Santa Anna, has been depicted in movies, television shows, and other visual media in the United States. American film producers have used the power of motion pictures to create a racialized narrative villainizing Antonio López de Santa Anna and Mexicans so as to aggrandize expansionists bent on eliminating or subordinating Tejanos. Films like “Birth of Texas: Martyrs of the Alamo” by DW Griffith and “The Alamo” by John Wayne pulled no punches as they project racial stereotypes of Latinos …

Learning From The Courageous Actions Of War And Post-War Time Teachers: A Bricolage Of Bosnian Educators, Elana Micahl Haviv
Antioch University Dissertations & Theses
The purpose of this study was to identify the preconditions that inspire courageous action through exploration of the choices made by four classroom teachers in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Each educator had made the decision not only to teach during or after the 1992–1995 war and genocide in their country, but to do so in ways that went against official post-war teaching guidelines. Although there are a vast number of studies on courage in literature, there is little research that includes teachers who remained in their classrooms during wartime or chose to enter their classrooms in transitional societies after their communities …
