Review Of: The Amish Incident: Rural Conflict And Compromise And The Amish Incident: Wisconsin V. Yoder—Kelly Rundle And Tammy Rundle, Jewel Yoder Kuhns

Journal of Amish and Plain Anabaptist Studies

Award-winning documentary filmmakers Kelly and Tammy Rundle have created two short films focusing on historical conflicts over parochial Amish education in Wisconsin and Iowa. Their first film, The Amish Incident: Rural Conflict and Compromise, released in 2019, follows the rising controversy in rural Buchanan County, Iowa, from the bitterly contested 1961 vote to merge two school districts in neighboring towns Oelwein and Hazleton to the dramatic 1965 “incident” when education officials tried to forcibly transport Amish students to the local public school. The second film, The Amish Incident: Wisconsin v. Yoder, released in 2021, picks up the story …

Symposium Review: Amish And Old Order Mennonite Schools: A Concise History—Joseph Stoll; And The School By The Cornfield—Samuel Coon, Jewel Yoder Kuhns, Daniel L. Yoder

Journal of Amish and Plain Anabaptist Studies

Joseph Stoll, in Amish and Old Order Mennonite Schools: A Concise History, and Samuel Coon, in The School by the Cornfield, provide two very different perspectives on the struggle to establish Anabaptist schools. The books contrast primarily in their geographic and chronological scope. However, both write about parochial schools with a voice sympathetic to the vision of Amish and Mennonite school founders. They use similar sources, drawing on newspaper accounts, published Amish schools’ histories, and Amish and Mennonite periodicals, as well as personal recollections from individuals involved in school conflicts. Documenting Difficult Cases: A Mixed Method Analysis, Thomas Daniel Knight

History Faculty Publications

This Special Issue of Genealogy examines the use of evidence, documentation, and methodology in family history and genealogical studies, and welcomes case studies that examine how to document individuals and relationships. A critical component of scholarly research focusing on the study of particular individuals or groups entails correctly identifying those individuals Historians, genealogists, historical demographers, and scholars in other disciplines sometimes undertake this sort of analysis. Often, research is uncomplicated if the research subject remained in a particular geographical area, or left a clear evidentiary trail, but what happens when historical documents do not clearly identify the research subject? (Re)Constructing Homescapes: “Archaeological Remote Sensing” And Ground-Truthing Of The Walker Place Homestead At Spirit Hill Farm, Tate County, Mississippi, Gabriel Griffin

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis focuses on an early nineteenth-century homestead known as the Walker Place homestead at Spirit Hill Farm in northern Mississippi. The goal of this thesis is to conduct a ground-penetrating radar (GPR) and shovel test survey to explore how changing landscapes simultaneously (re)create and destroy senses of place or Homescapes. Homescapes have received little attention in the field of archaeology and have not been applied to Euro-American Homescapes. I apply this theoretical construct in a novel way as a venture to further develop an avenue in archaeology to be collaborative and understand the past in a way that accurately …

Feminism, Femininity, And Arkansas First Ladies: Hillary Rodham Clinton And Janet Mccain Huckabee, Spencer A. Hurlbut

ATU Theses and Dissertations 2021 - Present

Through the 1970s and into the 2000s, Hillary Clinton and Janet Huckabee served as first ladies. Their husbands were elected and ran campaigns for Arkansas Governor and President of the United States. While the two men were the elected officials that constituents cast their votes for on election day, Hillary and Janet were beside the men playing a tremendous role in securing or discouraging votes. Third wave feminism ran rampant throughout these two decades and resulted in higher numbers of women in the workforce, later years of marriage, less children, and greater awareness of sexual harassment and sex discrimination. Hillary …

Edwards Dreams Of Alexandria: Library History In The Service Of Public Library Activism, Sebastian Modrow, Melissa Smith Aug 2022

Edwards Dreams Of Alexandria: Library History In The Service Of Public Library Activism, Sebastian Modrow, Melissa Smith

School of Information Studies - Faculty Scholarship

Our paper explores the relationship between Edward Edwards’s Memoirs of Libraries: Including a Handbook of Library Economy (1859) and 19th-century Britain’s Public Library Movement, especially the Public Library Acts of 1850 and 1855. Focusing on the instrumentalization of library history for the movement’s agenda, we show how Edwards projects the roots of this movement deep into antiquity and rhetorically creates a narrative of British deficiency set purposefully at odds with British patriotic and colonial sentiments, deriving from this vertical and horizontal comparison his arguments and advice for the establishment of municipal public libraries.

Pioneers Of Evacuation, Pioneers Of Resettlement: The Photographic Archive Of The Japanese American Incarceration And The Settler Colonial Imaginary, Christina Hobbs

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis reexamines the photographic archive of the Japanese American incarceration during World War II produced by the US government, arguing that these images “restage” the evacuation, incarceration, and resettlement periods through a settler colonial “pioneer” mythology, thereby obscuring the precarity of Japanese Americans' racial positionality between “settler” and “native.”

Plyler V. Doe: The Education Of Undocumented Alien Schoolchildren In Texas, 1975-1982, John Powell

History Theses and Dissertations

When a Texas statute denied a free public education to those who were not citizens or legal residents of the United States, four Mexican-American families challenged the constitutionality of that statute. The Supreme Court ruled in their favor, confirming that the Equal Protection Clause protects everyone regardless of immigration status.

元明時期華北國家秩序的重建 : 軍屯、漕運和馬政 : 以大名府為例, Senhao Hu Aug 2022

元明時期華北國家秩序的重建 : 軍屯、漕運和馬政 : 以大名府為例, Senhao Hu

Lingnan Theses (MPhil & PhD)

A Leap In The Dark: How Benjamin Disraeli’S 1867 Reform Bill Remade The Tory Party, Eric Beauregard

Honors Program Theses and Projects

Publications on Benjamin Disraeli tend to focus on popular topics like his clashes with William Gladstone, career as an author, or supposed opportunistic character. Biographers like Robert Blake have produced retellings of Disraeli’s life encompassing several volumes, and there are a multitude of writings on the lasting legacy he left on the Conservative Party and the United Kingdom as a whole. These publications also include Monypenny and Buckle’s seminal Life of Disraeli Vol.III 1846-1855 upon which a large portion of modern Disraeli scholarship is based. Some volumes like Young Disraeli: 1804-1846 by Jane Ridley focus on Disraeli’s life before he …

The Papers Of Clarence Mitchell Jr., Volume V : The Struggle To Pass The 1957 Civil Rights Act, 1955–1958, Clarence Mitchell Jr., Denton L. Watson

Ohio University Press Open Access Books

Volume V of The Papers of Clarence Mitchell Jr. records the successful effort to pass the 1957 Civil Rights Act: the first federal civil rights legislation since 1875.

Prior to the US Supreme Court’s landmark 1954 decision in Brown v. Board of Education, the NAACP had faced an impenetrable wall of opposition from southerners in Congress. Basing their assertions on the court’s 1896 “separate but equal” decision in Plessy v. Ferguson, legislators from the South maintained that their Jim Crow system was nondiscriminatory and thus constitutional. In their view, further civil rights laws were unnecessary. In ruling that legally mandated …
