America’S Forgotten Laborers: The World Of Enslaved Craftsmen, Zack Dow
America’S Forgotten Laborers: The World Of Enslaved Craftsmen, Zack Dow
Emerging Writers
This article examines the underrepresented world of enslaved artisans in the American south. In the minds of many, enslaved Americans were confined to unskilled plantation labor. While such labor constituted a large part of the work of the enslaved, master craftspeople go unrecognized, perpetuating an imagine of unskilled, nominal workers that undermines the accomplishments of the millions of black artisans working at the time.
A Bad Time To Name Your Pet: Pet Names In The Age Of Witches, Evan Velez
A Bad Time To Name Your Pet: Pet Names In The Age Of Witches, Evan Velez
Emerging Writers
In early America, there were many strange superstitions about witches. Colonists looked for all sorts of forms of witchcraft “evidence”. According to The Penguin Book of Witches, the nature of pet names may have served as an unconscious form of evidence (Howe 239). While the author thought of this suggestion as a form of social logic, this essay investigates it as a phenomenon of language. Pet names had a key role in influencing negative feelings towards animals labeled as “familiars.” This affected colonists’ perceptions of an animal, and resulted in the familiar eventually becoming a hated “pet.”

Richard Stankiewicz: His Work, Life, And Times; Artist, Professor And The Emergence Of Abstract Expressionism, Joan Fiori Blanchfield
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
This dissertation examines within the context of his life and times the work of the Second Generation artist Richard Stankiewicz (1922-83). It demonstrates at various stages his shifting modes of work as conditions of his geographical location, financial security, and the availability of materials changed. It expands and augments what has become the canonical view of the artist’s life and work, correcting critical misunderstandings and placing them coincident with pre-and post-World War II (the 1950s through the early 1980s) American and European history. It shows how the social, political, and geographic context of an artist’s life and the larger world …
The Spirit Of Cancun : Basic Needs And Development During The Cold War, Christian Ruth
The Spirit Of Cancun : Basic Needs And Development During The Cold War, Christian Ruth
Legacy Theses & Dissertations (2009 - 2024)
This project examines how international development changed during the second half of the Cold War, using development to highlight transformations in global discourse on needs, rights, and socioeconomic equity. After the late 1960s, nations in the global North, most notably the United States, struggled to reconcile the failure of the modernization schemes they had funded throughout the global South. In response, experts and activists around the world worked together in the 1970s to create a diverse array of alternative theories meant to uplift socioeconomically disadvantaged nations which centered on the concept of basic human needs. Yet the idea of basic …

White Man’S War: Māori Stance Against Conscription In The Great War, Kaia Lacey
White Man’S War: Māori Stance Against Conscription In The Great War, Kaia Lacey
Dean's Leadership Council Library Research Prize
New Zealand imposed conscription during WWI due to the fact the country was a part of the British Empire and was therefore required to contribute troops to the war effort on their behalf. Conscription, or compulsory military service, was used to quickly and effectively mobilize large numbers of soldiers to fight in the war. New Zealand introduced conscription through the Military Service Act of 1916, which required all able-bodied men between the ages of twenty and forty-five to register for military service. It was imposed initially only on Pākehā, or New Zealanders of European descent, leaving the Māori out of …
The Pitfalls Of Donor-Centricity: Mission-Based Fundraising For A New Era, Natalie Giannos
The Pitfalls Of Donor-Centricity: Mission-Based Fundraising For A New Era, Natalie Giannos
Historic Preservation Final Projects
As the role of arts nonprofits shift to increasingly serve communities, away from the Wunderkammer model of decades past, fundraising has remained the same. The time is now to assess the implications of the sector’s current model, in which fundraisers rely on a small number of big donations to keep organizations afloat. This paper considers the current state of fundraising for American arts nonprofits: outdated, exclusionary, and above all else, limitative. It offers three case studies that illustrate the ramifications of the major gifts model. Finally, it proposes some solutions, unravelling the commonly held belief that organizations today have little …
Japanese Empire, Seiji Shirane
Japanese Empire, Seiji Shirane
Open Educational Resources
Between 1895 and 1945, Japan was the first non-Western power to build an extensive empire in Asia. This course will introduce the rise of Japan as a late-imperialist power and its rivalries with the West and China. It will examine the nature of Japanese colonial rule in Asia by focusing on the case study of Taiwan (1895-1945), Japan's first and longest-ruled overseas colony. Although Japan's empire fell with its defeat to the United States in 1945, the legacies of empire have continued to shape Japan and Taiwan's relations not only with each other but also with neighboring countries in East …
The Heroic Slave, Frederick Douglass
The Heroic Slave, Frederick Douglass
Zea E-Books in American Studies
Frederick Douglass based this story on the real-life heroism of Madison Washington, who led the largest successful slave revolt in U.S. history in 1841. His story is told through the eyes and words of two white men. First, Mr. Listwell from Ohio sees Madison enslaved in Virginia, then a fugitive in Ohio, and finally a recaptured returnee bound from Richmond to the slave markets of New Orleans. Lastly, Tom Grant, the mate on the slave transport Creole, describes the ship’s takeover by its human cargo and its passage to the British Bahamas, where 128 men and women stepped out …

Andrew Fiske Memorial Center for Archaeological Research Publications
This report describes the scope and preliminary results of the archaeological mapping undertaken at the potential Afro-Indigenous Burial Ground on Sylvester Manor by the Fiske Center for Archaeological Research from the University of Massachusetts Boston in October of 2021 for the Sylvester Manor Educational Farm (SMEF). The data collection was prompted by Groundskeeper Gunnar Wisseman’s observation of a number of fieldstones that appeared on the surface of the area around the potential Afro-Indigenous Burial Ground. These stones were identified during and after a cleanup of the area. Because the SFEF master plan draft gives primacy to the potential Afro-Indigenous Burial …

Preliminary Report 2021: Geophysics, Coring, And Excavations At Hólar; Geophysics At Kálfsstaðir, Guðný Zoëga, John M. Steinberg
Andrew Fiske Memorial Center for Archaeological Research Publications
This report outlines the 2021 work at Hólar in Hjaltadalur as part of the Hjaltadalur Archaeological Survey Project (HASP). The results of soil coring suggest that the farmstead of Hólar is the most extensive farmstead measured using this method in the area of Skagafjörður. After over 1200 cores and 17 excavations (6 of which were part of the 2021 research), there are still no confirmed pre-1104 cultural deposits at Hólar. This difficulty in identifying the pre-1104 domestic occupation implies that Viking Age Hólar was probably not large. The Hólar farmstead domestic space seems to be tightly defined and constrained rather …
Healing Through Mother Earth, Taylor A. Russell
Healing Through Mother Earth, Taylor A. Russell
Dance (MFA) Theses
This thesis deals with mental health, with a focus on Black women. Historically, Black women are often so compromised, being constant caregivers and helping everyone else, that they forget to help themselves, not having the time and financial means to do so. If we go back in the time of slavery, many Black women were taking care of slave owners' children and suckling the white women’s babies instead of their own. By the time they got home and after diligently caring for other people’s children they were focused on their own children, who they had been away from for hours …

CGU Theses & Dissertations
Formed from the 9th Louisiana Volunteers of African Descent, the 47th USCI (United States Colored Infantry) was one of many African American Regiments which saw service in the U.S. Army in the Civil War and was a participant at the battles of Milken’s Bend, the Yazoo City Expedition, the Siege of Fort Blakely. With very little in the way of surviving accounts from the regiment’s Black enlistees This project seeks to examine the challenges this regiment, like so many other USCT (United States Colored Troops) regiments, faced in terms of manpower, leadership, equipment, and health, arguing that the despite these …
Learning From History: Real And Perceived Threats To National Security, David Dupont
Learning From History: Real And Perceived Threats To National Security, David Dupont
CGU Theses & Dissertations
Significant changes in American domestic security policies were generally associated with periods of military conflicts. Laws that would pave the way for legalizing the surveillance and internment of civilian populations have their origin in the Quasi-War. Likewise, the practice of state property seizure under the Office of Alien Property Custodian and limited internment programs were first established during WWI. Mass civilian internment came into existence leading up to WWII. This trajectory continued in modern times with the extensive system of domestic surveillance post-9/11. In this paper, I argue for gaining a historical comprehension of these issues by exploring their origins …
Harry E. "Indian" Miller: Spectacles Of Identity In The Early Twentieth Century American Southwest, Courtney Lamb
Harry E. "Indian" Miller: Spectacles Of Identity In The Early Twentieth Century American Southwest, Courtney Lamb
CGU Theses & Dissertations
Harry E. Miller was a self-styled historian, writer, lecturer, archeologist, sideshow impresario, zookeeper, and Route 66 curio shop owner who spent most of his adult life promoting himself as an Apache known as Indian Miller, Chief Crazy Thunder. Miller insisted on his Native American heritage despite the fact that he was born to a European-American family of pioneers, and for most of the early twentieth century, his audiences and customers apparently accepted the ruse. This paper examines Miller’s choice to engage in various kinds of what I define as spectacles of identity—performances dependent upon markers of ethnographic identity for their …
Never Again? The United Nations And Genocide: A Doomed Mission?, Maria Terrinoni
Never Again? The United Nations And Genocide: A Doomed Mission?, Maria Terrinoni
Capstone Showcase
Despite their commitment to international peace and security and to the concept of “never again,” the United Nations has failed to end the many genocides of the late 20th century. In this thesis, I use the genocides in Rwanda (1994) and in the Yugoslav Wars (1991-1999) as case studies to understand the UN’s response to genocide and to attempt to understand why the UN cannot effectively respond to and end genocide. I discover that issues such as the limitations of the Genocide Convention, the importance of state sovereignty, and overall institutional failures of the United Nation make any attempt to …
Piecing It Together: Analysis And Treatment Of A Painted Silk Flag, Katya Zinsli
Piecing It Together: Analysis And Treatment Of A Painted Silk Flag, Katya Zinsli
Art Conservation Master's Projects
Painted flags and banners lie at the intersection of painting and textile conservation. The 37th New York Volunteer Infantry Regiment’s battle flag from the Civil War presented challenges and advantages of bridging the two disciplines by providing an opportunity for study and experimentation for a graduate student from the Patricia H. and Richard E. Garman Art Conservation Department at SUNY Buffalo State College. This study was conducted to better understand the materials and degradation products present in a painted Civil War flag, which then informed the subsequent treatment of said flag. By characterizing the materials, the severe damage in …
The Loyalty Of The Lords Of Albret: An Investigation Of The Gascon Rolls At The Outset Of The Hundred Years War, Jason Delaney
The Loyalty Of The Lords Of Albret: An Investigation Of The Gascon Rolls At The Outset Of The Hundred Years War, Jason Delaney
Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023
This thesis will examine the juxtaposition of the duchy of Gascony's importance to the Plantagenet Crown with the difficulties administering the region and protecting it from French interference during the late-thirteenth and early-fourteenth centuries, resulting in the necessity of securing the loyalty of Gascon nobles for assistance. The lords of Albret were powerful allies under Edward I (1272-1307), and their defection to the French under his son, Edward II (1307-1327), put Plantagenet Gascony in a vulnerable position when the Hundred Years War began in 1337. Resecuring the loyalty of Albret – and other powerful Gascon lords – was crucial for …

Keywords In Caribbean Studies: A Project Statement, Vanessa Pérez-Rosario, Ryan Cecil Jobson
Publications and Research
Responding to a call for a renewed and reinvigorated project of Caribbean criticism, the Keywords in Caribbean Studies project proposes an examination of the critical vocabulary that shapes our field of study. A genuinely regional Caribbean criticism—one that necessarily encompasses the entirety of the Caribbean Sea and its archipelago, its coastal territories of the South and Central Americas, and their global circuits of migration and diaspora—demands concerted attention to the critical vocabulary with which we engage the region.

Textile art is widely used by artists to communicate a message. This concept simply employs materials and techniques unconventionally to produce works of art that strives to gain the attention of viewers. This project exercised the concept where yarns of different textures were used in the production of works of art that falls in the ambits of textile art. These works communicate the emotional state and ordeals street children undergo on the streets of Kumasi. The philosophical underpinnings of each textile art seeks to draw the attention of citizens about the struggle of these children in our society and support to …

Smart Band Technology : A Music-Based Activity For The Thai Elderly, Pornprapit Phoasavadi
Journal of Urban Culture Research
The Smart Band Application is a music application paired with a hardware device designed for the Thai elderly at foster care homes to enhance group participation in musical-based activities. It is small, wireless (or wired) and easily attached to most instruments that produce pitches. For this research a set of eight angklungs (a SE Asia bamboo tube shaker instrument) covering the range from C to high C was selected. Angklungs are affordable, easy to play and have an appealing sound. Eight Smart Band devices, which consist of a set of sensors and vibrators, were attached to the angklungs to collect …
