Preserving A Catholic Community: The History Of St. Anthony's Catholic Church In Weiner, Arkansas, Mary Jean Sitzer

Student Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation explores the creation, and development of the cultural landscape of Catholics in Weiner, Arkansas, as a means to interpret and preserve the heritage of the people of the region’s religious and Germanic heritage and how that has shaped this part of the state. The dissertation focuses on the development of a plan for the historical preservation and interpretation of St. Anthony’s Catholic Church along with three buildings, to serve as the centerpiece for these heritage preservation activities. This potential historic district includes four physical elements: the church building built in 1935, the parochial school for religious education which …

Sweet And Sour: The Representations Of Chinese Americans In American Popular Culture, 2010-2020, Yu Dong

Student Theses and Dissertations

ABSTRACT Yu Dong SWEET AND SOUR: THE REPRESENTATIONS OF CHINESE AMERICANS IN AMERICAN POPULAR CULTURE, 2010-2020 The history of Chinese Americans can be traced back to the 1850s. From “filthy foreigner” to “model minority” to “virus spreader,” White Americans’ attitudes and perceptions toward Chinese Americans have been vague and ambivalent and constantly shifting back and forth in different time periods. However, one thing has never changed – Chinese Americans are perpetual foreigners. The purpose of this dissertation is to investigate the representations of Chinese Americans in American popular culture (2010-2020) by comparing these images in Americans’ minds with Chinese American …

The Heritagescape Of The Egyptian Natural Lakes, Magdi Ahmed Ragheb Koutkat Nov 2021

The Heritagescape Of The Egyptian Natural Lakes, Magdi Ahmed Ragheb Koutkat

Student Theses and Dissertations

It is well-established that the ancient Egyptian civilization is water-based and derives its core cultural heritage assets from the country’s natural heritage constructs. Despites the scholarly studies on the Egyptian Natural Lakes (herein referred to as ENLs), from both natural and cultural perspectives, 1) these studies lack integration between the natural and cultural components of the ENLs, 2) the environmental studies do not provide continuous evolution of the ENLs, and 3) the cultural studies hardly touch on the role of the ENLs in the Egyptian civilization, which has not been thoroughly understood. This study investigates how far the ENLs were …

Comparing And Contrasting The Construction Of Identity By Residents Of Dyess Colony And The Rohwer Resettlement Camp, Ismail Moufdi Nov 2021

Comparing And Contrasting The Construction Of Identity By Residents Of Dyess Colony And The Rohwer Resettlement Camp, Ismail Moufdi

Student Theses and Dissertations

The objective of this dissertation is to study, compare, and contrast the construction of identity by residents of Dyess Colony and the Rohwer Resettlement Camp in order to evaluate the crucial impacts of these two places on their identity. As a result, I have become curious to learn how such a short period of time in both towns had significant impacts on their lives and identity, especially when almost every one of them shows excellent connections to these places and how these two locations affected the rest of their lives even for those who left the areas a long time …

Shadowcrest Manor, Michaela Bishop Nov 2021

Shadowcrest Manor, Michaela Bishop

The Tuxedo Archives

A soft cold breeze flowed throughout the whole house, it carried the scent of the Sea Island cotton and seawater, taking away the smell of dust and stillness. Shadowrest Manor was to become our new home here in Charleston. The manor had been vacant for a while since its last owner had passed away and leaving no will or surviving heir, the plantation was shut down. The outside was a little bit weather damaged however, Father is having the whole house repainted a colonial white, the front columns will be a nice off white to balance the main color. The …

Within ten years, however, David would be dead and Letitia would be dispossessed of all property and belongings. A former slave, Letitia had little social standing in the new territory and no …

Who Wrote "Barbour's Florida"?, Thomas S. Graham Nov 2021

Who Wrote "Barbour's Florida"?, Thomas S. Graham

Florida Historical Quarterly

In the years following the Civil War Americans in increasing numbers were becoming interested in Florida as a winter resort, a refuge for the infirm, and a frontier of opportunity. A brisk demand developed for accurate information about the state, which was romantically envisioned as the "Italy of America" or disparaged as a wilderness of swamp and everglades. To satisfy the market for knowledge about Florida a considerable quantity of newspaper stories, magazine articles, and tourist guide books were produced. Harriet Beecher Stowe, a pioneer in promoting Florida, sent out a series of articles from her winter retreat at Mandarin …

William V. Knott And The Gubernatorial Campaign Of 1916, Wayne Flynt Nov 2021

William V. Knott And The Gubernatorial Campaign Of 1916, Wayne Flynt

Florida Historical Quarterly

Sometime around 1958, William V. Knott recorded his impressions of the 1916 gubernatorial contest for a graduate student in New England. Much of this material was already available, especially in the master’s thesis by John R. Deal, Jr., "Sidney Johnston Catts, Stormy Petrel of Florida Politics" (University of Florida, 1949). Deal interviewed Knott and emphasized many points covered in this account. This is, however, the most complete and authoritative account yet published of the infamous "Sturkie Resolution" which played a critical role in the campaign. The manuscript is also a most complete revelation of Knott’s critique of the "Bryan Primary …

A Study Of Florida Defense Costs, 1565-1585: A Quantification Of Florida History, Paul E. Hoffman Nov 2021

A Study Of Florida Defense Costs, 1565-1585: A Quantification Of Florida History, Paul E. Hoffman

Florida Historical Quarterly

Superficially quantitative history, like happiness, is different things to different people. Basically, however, it seeks to verify in more explicit ways generalizations such as "X was more important than Y," and "slavery was (or was not) profitable." To that end, numbers and statistical tests are developed to describe the same reality as that dealt with by "traditional" history. For most practitioners of the methodology this numerical description is a second, verifying description having as much validity, but no more than a narrative about the same historical events. Occasionally, as with the fiscal history of Florida from 1565 to 1585, the …

Wade Leonard, Florida Naval Stores Operator, Clifton Paisley Nov 2021

Wade Leonard, Florida Naval Stores Operator, Clifton Paisley

Florida Historical Quarterly

Florida led all other states in naval stores production from 1905 to 1923, sometimes accounting for half of the nation's output. North Carolina had led from colonial times to the 1870s, but when naval stores declined there, many North Carolinians followed the industry southward and westward through the longleaf pine belt.

Spanish Fisheries Of Charlotte Harbor, E. A. Hammond Nov 2021

Spanish Fisheries Of Charlotte Harbor, E. A. Hammond

Florida Historical Quarterly

The fishermen from Cuba and other Spanish colonial settlements who had first sailed their smacks into the waters of Charlotte Harbor and Tampa Bay recognized that the bays, inlets, and rivers of the area abounded in edible fish and green turtle ready to be taken with minimal risk and perhaps even with substantial profit. The organic content of these waters provided ideal feeding haunts for many species for which there would be convenient markets. It may be reasonably assumed that commercial fishing, at least on a small scale, was carried on there in the latter part of the seventeenth and …
