Richard Keith Call, was born in Prince George County, Virginia, 1791. His father, Major William Call, was of high standing and influence, who had rendered distinguished service in the Revolutionary war. Major Call had possessed a large fortune; but after the war reverses came, his estate was embarrassed, and when he died very little was left, after the payment of all debts, for the support of his widow and children.

"On The Verge Of Liberty": The Impact Of Advocacy And Federal Policy At The Point Lookout Contraband Camp, Madelyn Shiflett
"On The Verge Of Liberty": The Impact Of Advocacy And Federal Policy At The Point Lookout Contraband Camp, Madelyn Shiflett
Departmental Honors & Graduate Capstone Projects
In 1862, the United States government established Hammond General Hospital at Point Lookout in St. Mary’s County, Maryland for the treatment of Union soldiers. In response, enslaved people in Maryland and Virginia began escaping to Point Lookout, and a contraband camp was soon formed. Even though official policies that governed the treatment of “contrabands” drastically changed between 1861 and 1865, many of these policies did not apply to the state of Maryland. As a result, these individuals faced repeated threats to their safety and well-being. Yet, the level of protection that these refugees received improved over time due to the …

War, Media, And Memory: American Television News Coverage Of The Vietnam War, Brock J. Vaughan
War, Media, And Memory: American Television News Coverage Of The Vietnam War, Brock J. Vaughan
Bridges: An Undergraduate Journal of Contemporary Connections
Social and political impacts of television news coverage of the Vietnam War are often glorified and grossly overestimated. This paper argues that the role of the American media during the war did not directly affect public support for the war, nor did it profoundly impact American nationalism and military policy. Television news coverage did, however, influence how events were perceived and remembered. The commonly held belief that the American news media was directly responsible for the decline of public confidence in the U.S. government, ultimately contributing to the public’s distaste for any further involvement in Vietnam, is a narrow viewpoint …
Isolation Versus Engagement: The Economic Factors In Sino-Canadian Relations, 1960s-1970s, Brendan Williams
Isolation Versus Engagement: The Economic Factors In Sino-Canadian Relations, 1960s-1970s, Brendan Williams
Bridges: An Undergraduate Journal of Contemporary Connections
This essay seeks to present a historic overview of this relationship as it developed between the 1960s and 1970s and showcase how certain events impacted this development. Canada has had a steadily growing economic relationship with the People’s Republic of China (PRC) since the latter’s reform and opening up policy under Deng Xiaoping in 1978. The development of this relationship was not a forgone conclusion, as Cold War tensions initially heightened ideological tensions between Maoist China and capitalist democracies like Canada. The path of normalization was impacted by both domestic and international events involving both Canada and the PRC, which …
The ‘Real’ Outcomes Of Language Learning: The History Of English Language Education In China, Olivia (Jia Ming) Feng
The ‘Real’ Outcomes Of Language Learning: The History Of English Language Education In China, Olivia (Jia Ming) Feng
Bridges: An Undergraduate Journal of Contemporary Connections
This paper examines the history of English Language Education (ELE) and its societal role in China from 1900 to 1990. Throughout different periods in China's modern history, ELE was associated with key issues, including the revitalization of the declining Qing dynasty, modernization during the Republican era, and Cold War competitions during the Mao era. To investigate the connections between ELE and the political trends and movements in modern China, my research examines textbooks written and used in 1913, 1976, and 1979 China. These texts were implemented under different regimes, showing that the historical and political trends shaped the development of …

Theses and Dissertations
This digital library exhibit covers significant programs or events concerning the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) during President Clinton’s administration. The administration established and implemented a series of space policies to address a broad range of civil, national security, and commercial activities. Secondary sources were consulted to provide the institutional history of NASA, NASA’s relationship with the executive branch, and the timeline of policies. Primary sources from the Clinton Library’s archives were used to provide evidence and context to the intention and actualities of policies. The resulting digital library exhibit shows how President Clinton’s administrative policies in conjunction with …
