Dyeing In Texts And Textiles: Words Expressing Ancient Technology, Ines Bogensperger, Helgo Rösel-Mautendorfer
Egyptian Textiles and Their Production: ‘Word’ and ‘Object’
The complex chaîne opératoire of ancient textile production in various stages has been frequently discussed by textile scholars. According to documentary papyri, textile manufacturing represented the highest taxed industry after agriculture. This emphasises its importance as a significant sector in the ancient economy. A highly specialised branch within the chaîne opératoire is the dyeing industry. Ancient dyers used natural and animal dyestuffs, as well as different dyeing techniques to achieve their colourful results. They were also aware of the specific properties of the different textile fibres. In ancient times, wool and linen were the characteristic materials for manufacturing textiles, but …

How (Not) To Organise Roman Textile Production. Some Considerations On Merchant-Entrepreneurs In Roman Egypt And The Ἱστωνάρχης, Kerstin Droß-Krüpe
Egyptian Textiles and Their Production: ‘Word’ and ‘Object’
For almost the last 100 years, various ancient historians have suggested that organisations comparable to the “putting- out” system existed in the Roman Imperial period. They are most commonly believed to have occurred in textile production. As early as 1913, Theodor Reil assumed that the production of textiles in Roman Egypt was organised through the putting-out system. This idea can subsequently be traced through more than a century to recent publications. However, as this assumption is rarely based on genuine source material, it seems appropriate to get to the bottom of this hypothesis. In this context, special attention will also …

Textile Production In The Papyri: The Case Of Private Request Letters, Aikaterini Koroli
Egyptian Textiles and Their Production: ‘Word’ and ‘Object’
Throughout the “papyrological millennium”, that is from the 3rd century BC to the 8th century AD, both administrative and private life in Egypt were largely based on letters. Apart from oral communication, letter writing, mostly on papyri and ostraca, was the only available form of communication for the inhabitants of the land of Nile when they needed to get in touch and exchange information with people who did not live in their immediate surroundings. Papyrus letters, written by and sent to private, ordinary people and not to the authorities, composed in the Greek vernacular and intended to fulfill a wide …

Domestic Textile Production In Dakhleh Oasis In The Fourth Century Ad, Jennifer Cromwell
Egyptian Textiles and Their Production: ‘Word’ and ‘Object’
Ancient Kellis, modern Ismant el-Kharab is located in Dakhleh Oasis in Egypt’s Western Desert. The main occupation of the village was from the early to late Roman period (late 1st century to the beginning of the 5th century AD). Excavated as part of the Dakhleh Oasis Project, the site has revealed textual and archaeological evidence from which a detailed picture of life can be painted. To date, the main publications of the village’s finds have focussed on the textual remains, of literary and documentary texts in Coptic, Greek, and Syriac.1 A comparable publication of the archaeological evidence from the site …

Paranormal Encounters In Iceland 1150-1400, Ármann Jakobsson, Miriam Mayburd
Paranormal Encounters In Iceland 1150-1400, Ármann Jakobsson, Miriam Mayburd
Northern Medieval World
This anthology of international scholarship offers new critical approaches to the study of the many manifestations of the paranormal in the Middle Ages. The guiding principle of the collection is to depart from symbolic or reductionist readings of the subject matter in favor of focusing on the paranormal as human experience and, essentially, on how these experiences are defined by the sources. The authors work with a variety of medieval Icelandic textual sources, including family sagas, legendary sagas, romances, poetry, hagiography and miracles, exploring the diversity of paranormal activity in the medieval North. This volume questions all previous definitions of …

Egyptian Pit-Looms From The Late First Millennium Ad — Attempts In Reconstruction From The Archaeological Evidence, Johanna Sigl
Egyptian Textiles and Their Production: ‘Word’ and ‘Object’
In discussions on the development of weaving technology, specifically treadle looms in the Mediterranean area, Egypt is often referred to as one of the earliest countries in which people used foot-powered looms for producing cloth. It is thought to have been in regular use in the production of cloth as early as the second half of the 1st millennium AD. This belief is built on results from excavations undertaken during the early 20th century by the Egypt Exploration Fund at the hill of Sheikh Abd el-Qurna in Luxor, as well as on textile studies. Unfortunately, none of the postulated looms …

Egyptian Textiles and Their Production: ‘Word’ and ‘Object’
This book, “Egyptian textiles and their production: ‘word’ and ‘object’ (Hellenistic, Roman and Byzantine periods)” is both very useful and… frustrating. Indeed, all volumes of transactions of a scientific symposium are bound to be so, since research is a never-ending story. However, this is particularly true of textile research, which involves so many different approaches. Most of the relevant scientific domains are represented in this volume. There is a good combination of several reports on new research – recently studied archaeological textiles and iconographic documents on weaving – with attempts at syntheses of available evidence, both archaeological and textual, alongside …

Reconstruction Of A Deconstructed Tunic, Anne Kwaspen
Egyptian Textiles and Their Production: ‘Word’ and ‘Object’
Tunics of the 1st millennium AD can be classified into two main groups according to the direction of the warp in the finished tunic. The first group of tunics has horizontal warp threads in the finished tunic. This means that the cloth as it is worn is rotated 90° from the weave direction on the loom. In the second group of tunics the warp runs vertically in the finished tunic. Each group of tunics has their typical technological features and finishing methods, with additional distinctions between wool and linen tunics. This article focuses on the study of a tunic belonging …

Faire Comme Les Castors : Un Idéal D’Organisation Du Travail En Nouvelle-France Dans Les Écrits De Nicolas Denys, Éric Debacq
The Goose

Planning And Power: Architectural Reflections Of Student Minorities At Cal Poly, Caroline Ambrose
Planning And Power: Architectural Reflections Of Student Minorities At Cal Poly, Caroline Ambrose
Cal Poly's History: Student Research Reports
This paper will dis sect the power dynamics of the built environment at California Polytechnic State University San Luis Obispo (Cal Poly) as it relates to spatial representation for minorities on campus. By observing campus growth throughout the university’s history through the lenses of campus minorities, including women, black students, queer students, and disabled students, a pattern of dismissal and reluctanct compliance comes to light. While the administration’s rhetoric often reflects goals of inclusivity and diversity, the architectural history of Cal Poly reflects a lack of investment and reaction to the concerns of student minorities.

Cal Poly Students Struggle For Gay Rights, Dio Capilla
Cal Poly's History: Student Research Reports
This paper follows the gay rights movement at Cal Poly and San Luis Obispo through the 1970s. Cal Poly’s Gay Students Union (GSU) was first proposed in 1972, but had to undergo a series of legal battles before Cal Poly administration finally granted the organization official school recognition four years later. University President Robert E. Kennedy only signed the Union’s bylaws under the direct advisory of the State Attorney General. Kennedy claimed his opposition to the club was only for legal reasons, but this claim did not hold up against previous statements made by the administration. Further discrimination was faced …

World War Ii And Its Impact On Cal Poly: Enrollment And Learn By Doing, Willie Kirschner
Cal Poly's History: Student Research Reports
This paper will argue that World War II had a positive impact on Cal Poly’s campus because of the establishment of the Naval Flight Preparatory School. Financial issues will be addressed as will the enrollment numbers before and after the war. Cal Poly’s learn by doing slogan will be discussed and how the Navy’s program solidified the idea. Student attitudes at the time will also be covered. With this paper I hope to add to the works done by previous scholars and to allow the reader to know more about the subject. With this information I hope to help others …

The Creation Of The Cal Poly Architecture Department And The Decline Of Multi-Disciplinary Education, Annie Martinez
Cal Poly's History: Student Research Reports
The creation of the architecture department spurred the decline of multidisciplinary education among the College of Architecture and Environmental Design (CAED). This development led to the separation and hierarchy of majors within CAED as it destroyed the communal nature of an experimental and innovative teaching approach. The process of this change reveals the detrimental impacts to the faculty, curriculum and culture of the department. The faculty was divided, leading to a less interdisciplinary curriculum and a less communal nature of innovative learning among the College community.
Historical Issues In Cal Poly’S Fraternities, Vincent Mejia
Historical Issues In Cal Poly’S Fraternities, Vincent Mejia
Cal Poly's History: Student Research Reports
In recent years, fraternities have grown exponentially at Cal Poly and have served many good purposes on campus. However, from the time of its inception in 1949 until now, there existed a great many problems. Much of the research that exists depicts the negative aspects of fraternities, such as hazing, rape, and racial antagonism. Cal Poly itself has also experienced similar issues throughout the course of its history. Hazing has been an issue at Cal Poly since before any Greek organization was on campus. It is easy to see how that behavior transitioned over once fraternities began arising. An early …
Cal Poly And Wwii: A Time Of Change, Matthew Schivo
Cal Poly And Wwii: A Time Of Change, Matthew Schivo
Cal Poly's History: Student Research Reports
The goal of this paper is to examine the effects of World War II on higher education, specifically California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo. WWII completely changed the dynamics of the school from the years 1939-1946 bringing in various federal programs as well as Naval programs to help support the school during financial hardship. Although the changes were not always liked by the students, or by the faculty and staff, they were necessary to keep Cal Poly up and running. Similar processes were happening at other colleges around the country as many of them faced similar financial problems as …

Forgotten Opposition: Cal Poly Reactions To American Imperialism In The 1980s, Cooper Lock
Cal Poly's History: Student Research Reports
The Reagan Administration employed aggressive rhetoric in combating the supposed spread of communism in Latin America during the 1980s. The El Salvador ruling party’s fight against the leftist Farabundo Martí National Liberation Front became a hotspot for United States foreign aid and involvement. Extensive amounts of money poured into the region, inciting equally extensive disapproval and distrust from the American people. The reactions to these events at a national level have been extensively covered, whereas university students’ have been left relatively in the dark. This paper analyzes Cal Poly reactions and responses to United States foreign policy throughout the decade. …
The Great Depression And Its Effects On Cal Poly: As Compared To Other Higher Educational Institutions Across The Nation, Daniel Verbera
The Great Depression And Its Effects On Cal Poly: As Compared To Other Higher Educational Institutions Across The Nation, Daniel Verbera
Cal Poly's History: Student Research Reports
Then California Polytechnic School did not fare well under the years of the Great Depression and under President Crandall. Cal Poly was in steep decline and eventually Crandall resigned during the peak of the economic crisis. However, President McPhee took over and brought with him a complete overhaul of the school into a vocational college. Not only did McPhee bring Cal Poly out of the Depression, but he expanded the college as well in terms of funding, projects, and buildings. By the advent of World War Two Cal Poly failed as an institution only in having been unable to supply …

Similarities Between The Second Generation Of Female Psychologists And Female Students In Cal Poly’S Child Development Program, Jenny Delk
Cal Poly's History: Student Research Reports
This essay aims to uncover the similarities between female students in Cal Poly’s Psychology and Child Development Department and the second generation of female psychologists in American society. The department’s history will be examined in order to establish its importance at Cal Poly, a traditionally vocational institution. Additionally, this essay will consider how female students in the department argued its importance and validity through on campus advocacy and their senior projects. The essay will close with a section detailing faculty perspectives on the validity of psychology and child development as a true science amongst other disciplines at Cal Poly. The …

Cal Poly's History: Student Research Reports
Scholarly work on the experience/erasure of Miss Margaret Chase: first and only female president of Cal Poly San Luis Obispo. With the main focus being on difficulties throughout her life, and impact of the male gaze on her legacy: which resulted in an extreme lack of direct primary sources. Through analysis of gender issues during Chase’s presidency and the effect of her erasure on campus it is clear that there is a disadvantage to being a woman in a position of power on Cal Poly’s campus. This disadvantage is chronicled throughout Chase’s life, but also to this day as there …
