Review: 'Holy Humanitarians: American Evangelicals And Global Aid', William Vance Trollinger Nov 2019

Review: 'Holy Humanitarians: American Evangelicals And Global Aid', William Vance Trollinger

History Faculty Publications

As I write, the city of Dayton is digging out from the devastating impact of fifteen tornadoes – four of which carried winds of 150-200 mph -- that struck the city and its environs on Memorial Day night. The American Red Cross (ARC) is spearheading community relief efforts, which, on the face of it, is no great surprise. But in Holy Humanitarians Heather Curtis makes clear that not only did the ARC (founded in 1881) not enjoy benevolence presumption in the first few decades of its existence, its fiercest competitor was the evangelical periodical, the Christian Herald.

In this …

The Great Cheese: John Leland (1754-1841) As An Enforcer Of Ciceronian Ideals Of Community, Holly Vlach

Armstrong Undergraduate Journal of History

This paper builds the argument that John Leland’s religious communities exemplify Ciceronian ideas of polis through his efforts to advocate for religious liberty and equality by first breaking down the concept of a Ciceronian polis and its basis in Platonic philosophy. This is done through a careful analysis of how John Leland’s sermons and other writings advocated for unity within the communities in Massachusetts and Virginia, using the case study of his religious town, Cheshire, Massachusetts, and the activities of the people within it. Additionally, this paper will examine how Cicero articulated that stronger communities lead to a stronger nation …

Rearing The Collective: The Evolution Of Social Values And Practices In Soviet Schools, 1953–1968, Svetlana Rasmussen

Department of History: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

This study examines the functioning of the Soviet school system and how the generation of Soviet children born from 1945 to 1952 internalized Soviet ideology in the school setting. The study argues that the knowledge, skill sets, and social networks Soviet schools provided the postwar generation were forged in the school collectives in the complex negotiation of suretyship relationships. Ideological and administrative agendas of the regional, city and district departments of education forced teachers and students to establish and maintain the relationships of poruka or mutual responsibility for the obligation imposed from above.

The study focuses on the administrative, teaching, …

Denmark's Lessons, Sten Rynning Nov 2019

Denmark's Lessons, Sten Rynning

The US Army War College Quarterly: Parameters

This article argues despite opportunities to learn valuable strategic lessons from Denmark’s effort in the Afghanistan War (2001–14), Danish civil authorities implemented a comprehensive approach policy that failed to establish a bridge to lessons learned by the military. Denmark’s experience in the Afghanistan War demonstrates promises and perils of lessons learned processes.

Editorial: Media Activism, Sexual Expressions, And Agency In The Era Of #Metoo, Bekeh Utietiang Ukelina Nov 2019

Editorial: Media Activism, Sexual Expressions, And Agency In The Era Of #Metoo, Bekeh Utietiang Ukelina

Wagadu: A Journal of Transnational Women's & Gender Studies

The problem is that sexism, homophobia, and all forms of gender discrimination remain patently a problem in our society. Sometimes, these are echoed in language and most times in policies and practices that remain deeply unjust. The erroneous stereotypes about women ingrained in our polity and economic systems have often led to the exclusion of women from positions of leadership.

“Blessed Within My Selves”: The Prophetic Visions Of Our Lorde, Flávia Santos De Araújo Nov 2019

“Blessed Within My Selves”: The Prophetic Visions Of Our Lorde, Flávia Santos De Araújo

Wagadu: A Journal of Transnational Women's & Gender Studies

This essay discusses the intellectual and poetic work of Audre Lorde and its significance for contemporary global movements for liberation. My discussion considers Lorde’s theorizing of difference and power, as well as her poetic work, as prophetic interventions within the context of the 1960s to the early 1990s. I argue that Lorde’s intellectual and literary work is the result of a black woman’s embodied experiences within the intersections of many struggles—notably, the ones against racism, sexism, and homophobia. This strategic positionality becomes, as I discuss, the centrality of Lorde’s prophetic vision of collective and inclusive liberation: one that permeates past …

Seduction As Power? Searching For Empowerment And Emancipation In Sex Work, Jennifer Chisholm Nov 2019

Seduction As Power? Searching For Empowerment And Emancipation In Sex Work, Jennifer Chisholm

Wagadu: A Journal of Transnational Women's & Gender Studies

A longstanding debate within feminism has been whether sex work is empowering or ultimately disempowering for those who engage in it. This essay seeks to contextualize discourses about seduction, prostitution, and sexual tourism as they relate to Brazil and to make a preliminary assessment as to the ways in which the act of seduction might be empowering for Brazil’s sex workers. Based on ethnographic research and borrowing from literary theory, tourism theory, and interdisciplinary theories of power and agency, I argue that seduction has the potential to be empowering for Brazilian prostitutes who can capitalize on the racial and ethnic …

Sexual Real Estate: Repatriation, Reterritorialization, And The Digital Activism Of Nicole Amarteifio’S Web Series An African City, Tori Arthur

Wagadu: A Journal of Transnational Women's & Gender Studies

When Nicole Amarteifio, a Ghanaian born-United States raised repatriate to Ghana, uploaded the first episode of An African City to YouTube on March 2, 2014, she began a transnational televisual movement. The series, with two seasons completed and aired and a third season in the works, is a global powerhouse that not only shifts narratives about African mass media production and consumption, but also challenges limited notions of African life, especially for a new generation of the continent’s women. As the first of its kind on the African continent, the web series not only reconfigured the West African media landscape …

Women’S “Empowerment” In The Bangladesh Garment Industry Through Labor Organizing, Chaumtoli Huq

Wagadu: A Journal of Transnational Women's & Gender Studies

By critiquing empowerment in international development discourse and reconceptualizing it, the article shows how Bangladeshi garment workers have used the trade union space to achieve socio-economic empowerment despite barriers to labor organizing. Further, it argues for the development of working class women’s leadership.

It deconstructs Western ideas about Uganda, using counter-storytelling from an anti-racist, decolonial, feminist and queer people of color perspective, merging historic discourse analysis, qualitative sociology and various ethnographic forms such as autoethnography.

Wagadu: A Journal of Transnational Women's & Gender Studies

The authors argue in the book that Trump’s election shows the power and presence of patriarchy in American society and how gender can become the optics and hermeneutics of seeing things within a patriarchal framework.

Eva and Otto is a true story about German opposition and resistance to Hitler as revealed through the early lives of Eva Lewinski Pfister (1910–1991) and Otto Pfister (1900–1985). It is an intimate and epic account of two Germans—Eva born Jewish, Otto born Catholic—who worked with a little-known German political group that resisted and fought against Hitler in Germany before 1933 and then in exile in Paris before the German invasion of France in May 1940. This Land Is Whose Land? History, Fiction, And The 1800’S Cherokee Removal In Inskeep’S Jacksonland, Payton Tolbert

Armstrong Undergraduate Journal of History

This article explores the relationship between history and fiction closely, using Steve Inskeep’s Jacksonland as a source of study. Backed by the ideals of Beverley Southgate’s History Meets Fiction, the article analyzes the way that Andrew Jackson is viewed in current day’s society, based on the primary sources that are chosen to highlight him. It then aims to shine the light on his treasonous actions against the Cherokee nation and his conflict with John Ross. This begs the right to ask the question as to why Jackson is still so highly respected despite evidence condemning him. With a focus …

Mayan Bloodshed: Examining What Allowed For Genocide To Occur In Early Colonial Yucatan, Tyler C. Rodriguez

Armstrong Undergraduate Journal of History

By the mid-sixteenth century, Yucatan was firmly under Catholic control. By 1561, there were dozens of friars and eight monasteries in operation, and programs aimed at converting Mayan natives to Catholicism appeared to be going smoothly. However, in 1562 friars at Mani were confronted with clear evidence that the “Christian Indians” were still worshiping their previous gods in secret. The Indians accused of idolatry were rounded up and subject to a severe form of torture known as the garrucha, a form of torture including flogging and the burning of flesh using wax.

This paper explores what factors lead to …

Anglo-American Loan And Britain's Economic Struggles In Post-War Europe, Jessica Solomon Nov 2019

Anglo-American Loan And Britain's Economic Struggles In Post-War Europe, Jessica Solomon

Armstrong Undergraduate Journal of History

The Anglo-American Loan of 1946 weakened the British Empire as the United States grew as the top global power. By supplying the Allied Powers with weapons and ammunitions during World War II, through the Cash and Carry Policy and the Lend-Lease Act, the United States economic superiority in the postwar made most of Europe look for assistance in the rebuilding of Europe. This research paper, through the analysis of primary and secondary sources, conducts how the British Empire fell at the hands of the United States in the 20th century. Through looking at British Parliament and American Congress transcripts, …
