Interactions Of War: Exhibiting World War Ii And The Holocaust, Taylor Aspinwall

This paper discusses the use of interactive elements in museums that deal with difficult subject matter, such as war or genocide. This research involves interviews with museum personnel at the Columbus Museum in Columbus, Georgia, the National Infantry Museum in Columbus, Georgia, the Museum of History and Holocaust Education in Kennesaw, Georgia, and the World War II Home Front Museum in St. Simons Island, Georgia. This research also discusses the design of a potential exhibit using interactives about women in the resistance movement during Nazi occupation.

The Aldrich House Project, Alison J. Darby

Built in 1886, the Aldrich House is one of the few buildings from the nineteenth century still standing in Bulloch County, Georgia. Mrs. R. E. Aldrich donated the house to the Kiwanis Club of Statesboro in 1975. The club moved the building from its original location on Harville Road to the Ogeechee Fairgrounds to be part of the Heritage Village. The Aldrich House only opens during the annual Kiwanis Ogeechee Fair in October; therefore, few members of the public know about the site. This article details an experiment in an 11^th and 12^th grade 3-week intensive course, the Science and History of Contagious Disease. The course was an interdisciplinary survey of how diseases are spread along with an examination of social responses. Although both lecture and discussion based, the course revolved primary around a trip in which we led approximately 22 students through archival research in the City of Savannah Municipal Archives on the Yellow Fever epidemics of 1820, 1854, and 1876. Louise of Meckelburg-Strelitz was born on March 10, 1776 and died just thirty-four years later. In her short time as the queen consort of Prussia, she would give birth to nine children, command her own dragoons, negotiate with Napoleon, and eventually become a complex and celebrated German historical figure. Immensely popular in life, her early death was considered a national tragedy, and commemorations of her life only solidified her role as a new type of Prussian queen. Starting in 1769, the Spanish established missions in Alta California. A small band of soldiers, Franciscan priests and volunteers walked from Baja California to San Francisco Bay through semi-arid, scarcely populated land stopping occasionally to establish a location for a religious community. Usually two priests, a few soldiers and a few Indians from Baja California settled at the spot. Their only resources for starting an economy were themselves, a few animals and a nearby source of water. They attracted the local Indians to join the community and perform the work necessary to create a strong economy. After only a few …

Frank Wakeley Gunsaulus was a preacher who began his ministry in 1875 as a little-known itinerant Methodist in rural Ohio. Within two decades, he became one of America’s most influential religious figures with a popular style and message of hope for the future. This paper examines the mission of this pulpiteer, who believed Jesus and industrial capitalism could solve the problems of labor conflict, poverty, and sin as the kingdom of God was gradually realized on earth.
