2018 Annual Dinner Program, The O'Callahan Society, College Of The Holy Cross

O'Callahan Society Annual Dinner Program

Eighteenth annual dinner sponsored by The O'Callahan Society. This year's event departed from the standard format of a keynote speaker in order to give four individuals, whose lives were dramatically impacted by the Vietnam conflict, the opportunity to speak. Medal of Honor Recipient Captain Thomas G. Kelley, USN (ret) HC ‘60; his wife, Commander Joan Kelley, USNR (ret); former POW Commander Timothy B. Sullivan, USN (ret) HC ’65, and Marine veteran Harry Kustigian have agreed to share their experiences and insights.

This year is dedicated to remembering the men and women who served in Vietnam a half century ago.

Living Through Rat Hell: The Lives And Escape Attempts Of Soldiers At Libby Prison, Blake Davis Sep 2018

Living Through Rat Hell: The Lives And Escape Attempts Of Soldiers At Libby Prison, Blake Davis

Montview Journal of Research & Scholarship

This paper examines the lives and experiences of the men who survived the horrors of the Confederate prisoner of war camp, Libby Prison. Located inside the Confederacy’s capital city, the camp housed captured Union officers from its establishment in 1862 until the fall of Richmond in 1865. Under the command of the Major Thomas Turner and the dreaded Warden Richard Turner, Libby foreshadowed the horrors of concentration camps which would be run by other Germans eighty years later. Unlike a normal officer’s prison, the conditions faced by the officers at Libby were incredibly deplorable. By the war’s end, the camp …

Understanding Muhammad's Interaction With The Church, Devonte Narde Sep 2018

Understanding Muhammad's Interaction With The Church, Devonte Narde

Montview Journal of Research & Scholarship

My research focuses on understanding Muhammad’s (the Islamic prophet) interaction with what he perceived to be the Christian church to find out why his understanding of Biblical narratives and theology is incorrect. With this information, Christians should reintroduce Christian scripture and theology to Muslims since Muhammad’s rejection of Christian doctrine is based on associating wrong texts as authoritative Christian teaching. The following questions that shape this research are: What possible sources did Muhammad use to learn about biblical narratives and themes? What did the first Muslims think about the canonical gospels of Jesus? How did early Muslims view the teachings …

“Where The Spirit Of The Lord Is There Is Liberty”: The Bible As A Vessel For Remembrance, Guidance, And Self-Understanding During The Civil War, Savannah Labbe Sep 2018

“Where The Spirit Of The Lord Is There Is Liberty”: The Bible As A Vessel For Remembrance, Guidance, And Self-Understanding During The Civil War, Savannah Labbe

The Gettysburg Compiler: On the Front Lines of History

Courage, guidance, family, strength, self-understanding, and survival: These are just a few of the things that this Bible represented to the soldier who carried it. For Private Lewis Tway of the 147th New York Volunteers, this Bible provided a tangible link to all these things—a way to make sense of the at-times non-sensical chaos and carnage of war, a way to grow, learn, and adapt to the infinite physical and spiritual challenges of soldiering while still firmly rooting Tway in the foundational people and principles that gave his life meaning. Tway’s engagement with this Bible was never static; the evolution …

Arkansas’S Rosenwald Schools 1917-1924, Chelsea Deserea Mcnutt Sep 2018

Arkansas’S Rosenwald Schools 1917-1924, Chelsea Deserea Mcnutt

Student Theses and Dissertations

This work explores Arkansas Rosenwald Schools in rural African American communities from 1917-1924. Jim Crow laws governed the lives of black southerners throughout the region. Such laws unjustly marginalized them, their communities, and their schools. In 1868, Arkansas passed Act 52, which mandated segregated and unequal schools for black and white Arkansans. Black Arkansans, both children and adults, lacked educational opportunities, especially those residing in rural areas. African Americans, of all socioeconomic backgrounds, understood the importance of education. Education allowed black Arkansans to reshape their lives and futures. Much of this effort was aided by resources from the Rosenwald Fund. …

Environment, Urbanization, And Public Health: The Bubonic Plague Epidemic Of 1912 In San Juan, Puerto Rico, Ann Zulawski Sep 2018

Environment, Urbanization, And Public Health: The Bubonic Plague Epidemic Of 1912 In San Juan, Puerto Rico, Ann Zulawski

Latin American and Latino/a Studies: Faculty Publications

In this article I focus on the nexus of urbanization, the environment and public health that was exposed by the 1912 bubonic plague epidemic in San Juan, Puerto Rico. I utilize the concept of “urban health penalty,” developed by demographic historians of the industrial revolution in Europe, to account for the declining health of the working class in cities. While in Europe poor health among the urban poor was associated with industrialization, I argue that in San Juan chaotic, unplanned urbanization reflected the effects of colonialism. I further examine how the epidemic exacerbated the class and racial divisions that contributed …

Pardon For Murder: Jared Dalton, The "Assassin Of Old Mother Parker", Rebecca A. Wiederhold

View the video presentation here: https://youtu.be/soJlvXhvvDA?t=3032

On her fateful 63rd birthday in April 1880, Mary Parker was lured to the outskirts of the small southern Utah town of Rockville, where she falsely expected to reunite with a disgraced son. There, she was “outraged” and murdered, her throat slit and her body left under a pile of rocks. Mary Parker’s tragic story was once a sensational news item that shocked the rural community and was indignantly reported and followed throughout the state. Her presumed murderer was swiftly identified as Jared Dalton, the twenty-two-year-old son of a Latter-day Saint polygamist and his …

From Maggie To May: Forty Years Of (De)Industrial Strategy, James Silverwood, Richard Woodward Sep 2018

From Maggie To May: Forty Years Of (De)Industrial Strategy, James Silverwood, Richard Woodward

Articles

Upon becoming Prime Minister, Theresa May installed industrial strategy as one of the principal planks of her economic policy. May's embrace of industrial strategy, with its tacit acceptance of a positive role for the state in steering and coordinating economic activity, initially appears to be a decisive break with an era dating back to Margaret Thatcher, in which government intervention was regarded as heresy. Whilst there are doubtless novel features, this article argues that continuity is the overriding theme of May's industrial strategy. First, despite the reluctance to confess it, like every UK government over the past forty years, May …

The Digital Monograph And Primary Source Databases: Agenda Toward A Unified Conversation, James Kessenides Sep 2018

The Digital Monograph And Primary Source Databases: Agenda Toward A Unified Conversation, James Kessenides

Charleston Library Conference

In the realm of scholarly research and publishing in the humanities, much interest and activity has focused on the impact of digital technology on the academic monograph, and on the application of this technology to archival collections. In terms of the former, this paper addresses the discourse of the “future of the monograph,” focusing on statements made about the digital monograph assuming new online forms. In terms of the latter, this paper comments on primary source databases. Whereas the “future of the monograph” has been approached mainly as a question of form, the matter of primary source databases has been …

One Root, Many Trees: Reviving Collections Practices, Kevin Farley, Emily Davis Winthrop, Ibironke Lawal, Patricia Sobczak

Charleston Library Conference

Collections are undergoing intense change and pressure from technology, budgetary uncertainties, and emerging perspectives on future approaches. Our case study—drawn from our experiences as collections librarians—examines these complex issues facing academic collections, large or small, across the profession. Through the development of “collections of distinction” within the local collection, collaborations and scholarly partnerships with colleagues and faculty, and advocacy for the importance of dedicated oversight to ensure that collections investments fulfill the academic mission, we explore possible solutions to the complicated issues defining contemporary collections practices.
