Books and Documents
After publishing "John Wood (Blacksmith) From Scotland to Rawdon, NS in 1815, His Descendants" in 2013, the author traveled to the home of his ancestors in Scotland in 2014. There he met and exchanged information with other extended family members who had been compiling information on Margaret Cranston, the wife of John Wood, as well as John Wood. This additional information allowed him to amend his 2013 book, which is presented here in digital format.

Zurvan and his family had a good life in Afghanistan. He worked as a clerk in a spice shop. After doing business with a foreign company, the Taliban threatened him with death. To escape this threat, he and his family escaped to Iran and hired a smuggler to get them to Turkey. From there, they traveled to Greece in an overloaded boat. They have been living in a camp in Greece, stuck in limbo, ever since. Zurvan feels hopeless, like everyone in the camp is being treated in an inhumane manner. He also feels guilty for bringing his children into …

But in India, they discovered difficulties in obtaining permanent visas so they had return to Kabul where they hid at a friend’s house for 20 days while obtaining documentation to flee to Turkey. Leap Year: Chance, Chase, Or Curse?, Sue Lynn Mcdaniel
SCL Faculty and Staff Publications
Based on a popularized legend in which St. Patrick granted to St. Bridget the right for all single women to propose marriage during leap years, the custom has produced ephemera as evidence of stereotypical old maids and bachelors and created vinegar valentines, ball invitations, dance cards, sheet music and calling cards. Between 1904 and 1916, at least 54 publishing houses created Leap Year postcards illustrated by more than 17 of the most talented artists of the day. Despite possible good intentions, the majority of the ephemera stereotypes single women as so desperate to marry that even unsuitable spouses, including alcoholics, …

The Munich Visiting Program, 1960-1972, Jesse Gamoran
The Munich Visiting Program, 1960-1972, Jesse Gamoran
Honors Papers
In 1960, during a resurgence of anti-Semitism, the Munich government initiated a program to invite Jewish former residents of Munich (who left during the 1930s and early 1940s due to the Nazis) back to their hometown for two-week visits. This program offered the participants a chance to reminisce about their childhoods, reconnect with their heritage, and visit their former communities. For the government, this program provided a crucial connection between the old prewar Munich and the new Munich of the 1960s, between Munich as the birthplace of National Socialism and Munich as a newly rebuilt city, ready to move forward …
Virtus In The Roman World: Generality, Specificity, And Fluidity, Kyle W. Schrader
Virtus In The Roman World: Generality, Specificity, And Fluidity, Kyle W. Schrader
The Gettysburg Historical Journal
Virtus in the Roman world was often cited, by the Romans themselves, to be their defining attribute that allowed them to conquer the Mediterranean. Virtus’ meaning changed throughout the Roman Republic as different successful methodologies came into usage, and eventually the word virtus focused solely on those who were successful, rather than their own moral or practical character.

La Nouvelle-Orléans : Une Ville Créole, Torrey Smith
La Nouvelle-Orléans : Une Ville Créole, Torrey Smith
Richard A. Harrison Symposium
Using the author’s experience this past summer living in New Orleans and working at l’Alliance Française de la Nouvelle-Orléans (a French cultural center in town) as a jumping-off point, this essay explores the birth and evolution of the city under French colonization. During her two-month stay, the author observed that l’Alliance seemed to attract mainly wealthier, white New Orleans residents; this limited interest seemed strange not only considering the incredible racial and socioeconomic diversity of the city, but also given that New Orleans’ French heritage seemed prevalent in the physical and cultural structure of the city.
To tackle the question …

Creating Knowledge
Dear Students, Colleagues, Alumni and Friends,
Throughout my career as faculty and administrator in higher education I have been honored with the opportunity to introduce and celebrate the publication of scholarly work by colleagues and graduate students in many disciplines and institutions around the world. After more than three decades of doing so, this is the first time that I have the pleasure of introducing a formal publication of work created by a talented group of undergraduate scholars. This honor is further magnified by the fact that beyond its formal format, this is a reviewed publication of extraordinary rigor and …
