This thesis examines the role that three predominantly black art organizations – Gallery Enterprises, the Louisville Arts Workshop, and the West Side Players – played in Louisville, Kentucky’s black community during the mid-twentieth century. Working from the integrated and cooperative nature of the long Black Freedom Struggle in Louisville, Kentucky, local black artists formed integrated organizations around the arts and promoted black identity, inclusivity and creativity through community-building and consciousness-raising. The Willis family correspondence (the bulk of the collection) is almost exclusively amongst females, so housekeeping, sewing, fashion, family matters are discussed frequently. Frank Willis, the family patriarch, does discuss farming with his daughters. Many of the letters are addressed to his wife, Laura (Edmunds) Willis, and a majority of those are from her daughters.

On 22 February 1866, she relates further news of her family and husband, and wonders if Catherine has another baby; in light of her delicate health, she suggests that Catherine send her husband “trav[e]ling” and offers to help “give him a good whip[p]ing.”

Camped near Nashville, Tennessee, he describes forced marches, including from Bowling Green, Kentucky to Nashville; rain; sickness among his fellow soldiers; and the difficulty of reaching Nashville or receiving mail due to bridge burning by the Confederates. Footsore from marching, he promises to “settle with Jeff for this if we ever catch him.”
