Reparations For Modern Day Inequalities, Deneysha Riley

Justice: What's the Right Thing to Do? (Class of 2019)

As part of the English 101.003 Writing Seminar taught by Dr. Anne Porter in Fall 2015 at Providence College, this essay was written in response to an assignment to articulate a central question about slavery reparations. The essay explores the question from various angles and makes reference to Justice: What’s the Right Thing to Do? by Michael J. Sandel, “The Case for Reparations” from The Atlantic (June 2014) by Ta-Nehisi Coates, as well as at least one additional, scholarly source. The essay is written for college-age readers, who are interested in the issue and asking the same questions.

German-American Compositional Identity In William Henry Pommer’S The Legend Of St. Etheldethelwethelberga And Quartet No. 1 In G Minor, Nikolaus Schroeder

Student Summer Scholars Manuscripts

William Henry Pommer (1851-1937) presents an interesting case study of German-American composition in the Midwest. Pommer’s family was among the first settlers of the self-consciously German town of Hermann, Missouri. Pommer first studied in St. Louis, then traveled to Leipzig and Vienna, where his teachers included Reinecke and Bruckner. Upon returning to the US in 1875, he was active as a composer for about twenty years and also became a prominent music educator in Missouri schools and universities. Pommer occupies a unique compositional position; he interacted with American performers, composers, and educators for most of his life, but received his …

Seeing The Sorrow Anew: Recapturing The Reality Of Suffering Through Srebrenica, Matthew D. Laroche

The Gettysburg Compiler: On the Front Lines of History

Those who know death know mourning. Those who know mourning know the meaning of empty spaces that we all wish had stayed filled. But do we, or even can we, as the few members of this society who habitually reflect upon the tragedies and triumphs of the past, fully understand the immensity of the suffering we dwell upon while wandering our battlefields? Defeat And Memory At The Arkansas State Capitol: The Little Rock Monument To The Women Of The Confederacy, 1896-1914, Zachary Lynn Elledge

Student Theses and Dissertations

Resting in the southeast corner of the Arkansas state capitol is the Little Rock monument honoring the women of the Confederacy. Known as the Southern Mother, the Arkansas division of the United Confederate Veterans (UCV) erected this monument to commemorate the sacrifices of Arkansas women during the Civil War. Sculpted by J. Otto Schweizer, a Swiss-American from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, this monument represents two versions of Arkansas’ Civil War history: that of the sculptor, and that of its patrons. Arkansas broke away from the national UCV in 1906 and proceeded on its own to memorialize Confederate women’s war time sacrifices. Paid …
