God's Rebel: Christian Socialism In East Texas, 1911-1917, Austin Quinten

History Theses

This study presents a micro-history of the religious ideas of a weekly radical newspaper entitled The Rebel. At the foundation of this paper lies two movements that gained widespread popularity in the early twentieth-century: the socialist and Social Gospel movements. The Rebel, in order to have the ability to spread its religious influence, spoke to the local issues that farmers and workers of the rural Southwest were most concerned, namely farm tenancy and the perceived alienation from the church. Once The Rebel attained a rather large readership, the religious writers of the paper combined the idea of the "Kingdom" proposed …

Their Chance For Redemption?: The Dauphin County Regiment At Second Fredericksburg, Kevin P. Lavery Jan 2015

Their Chance For Redemption?: The Dauphin County Regiment At Second Fredericksburg, Kevin P. Lavery

The Gettysburg Compiler: On the Front Lines of History

After a less than respectable showing on the slopes of Marye’s Heights in December 1862, the 127th Pennsylvania Regiment found itself in desperate need of an opportunity to redeem itself on the field of battle. Could a mulligan assault on the same ridge be the key to restoring their honor? Assigned to Hall’s Brigade in Gibbon’s Division for the duration of the Chancellorsville Campaign, they now had a chance to find out. [excerpt]

Montgomery County's Veterans Treatment Court Offers Opportunity For A Second Chance, Allison M. Loy, Will Davis

Veterans' Voices on WYSO

For veterans, reintegration back into civilian life after military service can be traumatic. Many vets make this transition successfully, but for others it’s very difficult, and some even commit crimes as a result of service-related trauma. Rather than let these men and women get lost in the criminal justice system, the Veterans Treatment Court was created – and courts like these are happening more around the country.

What’S In A Name?: The Connection Between The Native Americans And The Streets Of Buffalo, 1802-1857, Deirdre Reynolds Jan 2015

What’S In A Name?: The Connection Between The Native Americans And The Streets Of Buffalo, 1802-1857, Deirdre Reynolds

The Exposition

This article focuses on how the street names of Buffalo, New York, have evolved over time in response to shifting sentiment toward the Native American population. Though the street names in Buffalo started off as primarily Germanic and Anglo-Saxon, as tensions rose between the white inhabitants of Buffalo and the Native population, more street names were named with tribal words. This was played out against the dramatic backdrop of Native American legal battles against the city of Buffalo and other land companies for the right to stay on their ancestral lands. In 1857, the Seneca Nation won a landmark case …

Democracy And Nobility, Allen C. Guelzo Jan 2015

Democracy And Nobility, Allen C. Guelzo

Civil War Era Studies Faculty Publications

Americans love revolutions. Our national identity began with a revolution, and a revolutionary war that lasted for eight years; and we cheer on other people’s revolutions, as though we find satisfaction in multiplying our own. “I hold that a little rebellion now and then is a good thing & as necessary in the political world as storms in the physical,” wrote Thomas Jefferson. “No country should be long without one.” An excited James Garfield, in his maiden speech in the House of Representatives in 1864, asked whether his colleagues “forget that the Union had its origin in revolution.” Ralph Waldo …
