Super Bowl Xlix, Richard C. Crepeau
Super Bowl Xlix, Richard C. Crepeau
On Sport and Society
It is a 153 page document made public by the Minneapolis Star-Tribune that begins with these awkward sentences: The day of the Super Bowl game (the “Game” or the “Super Bowl”) is America’s unofficial holiday, a day when the attention of an entire nation is focused on the Game in one region between the championship teams of the American and the National Football Conferences. The most highly anticipated annual sports event in North American sports is also a time for festive celebration and civic pride.”

Sms And Crm: Parallels And Opposites In Their Evolution, Jonathan Velazquez, Nicole Bier
Sms And Crm: Parallels And Opposites In Their Evolution, Jonathan Velazquez, Nicole Bier
Journal of Aviation/Aerospace Education & Research
The current study compared the evolution of Crew Resource Management (CRM) and Safety Management Systems (SMS). Though CRM is a mature safety tool, it continues to change. CRM is more widely accepted and practiced in the aviation industry today, decades after it launched. Similar to CRM during the 1980s, SMS has some milestones to reach. It will require time to gain exposure and acceptance before it matures into a championed safety instrument. An examination of the evolution of both safety programs revealed that SMS met CRM in the late 1990s with the progression of safety thinking and human factors research. …

Symposium in Comparative History
Notions of shared humanity or fundamental difference among nations, races, and sexes have histories. Since the early modern era countless philosophers and scientists, agents of church or state, and ordinary women and men have attempted to ground fluctuating categories—appearance, language, spiritual beliefs, mode of subsistence, technology and material culture, bodily strength, gender roles, and sexuality—in a divine or natural order to explain existing or desired hierarchies, social relations, and political arrangements. Other individuals have actively resisted such scholarly theories, legal or religious categories, and popular prejudices, implicitly or explicitly putting forward their own understandings of individual and communal identities. These …

Twelve Years A Terror: U.S. Impact In The 12-Year Civil War In El Salvador, Cara E. Mckinney
Twelve Years A Terror: U.S. Impact In The 12-Year Civil War In El Salvador, Cara E. Mckinney
International ResearchScape Journal
This essay explores the impacts of the United States government and military in the civil war in El Salvador in a comprehensive historical study. Through the presence of monetary aid, a disregard for the human rights of people in El Salvador, and the presence of U.S. trained soldiers at the then School of Americas and the current Western Hemisphere Institute for Security Cooperation, the U.S. prolonged and augmented the negative effects of the Salvadoran Civil War.
Demon Possession In Anglo-Saxon England, Peter Dendle
Demon Possession In Anglo-Saxon England, Peter Dendle
Research in Medieval and Early Modern Culture
Anglo-Saxon England was a society governed by the competing discourses of illness, spirituality, power, and community. The concepts of demon possession and exorcism, introduced by Christian missionaries, provided a potential outlet for expressing the psychological, biological, and sociopolitical dysfunctions of a society that was at the center of multiple conflicting cultural dimensions.
Demon Possession in Anglo-Saxon England is a reexamination of the available sources describing the possessed and a study of the currently recognized medical and psychiatric conditions that may be relevant to and resemble medieval possession.

Selig Retires, Richard C. Crepeau
Selig Retires, Richard C. Crepeau
On Sport and Society
On Sunday, with no real NFL Football to clutter the world of sport, the man who I once referred to as the “Acting Commissioner for Life,” will retire. It turned out that the “Acting-Commissioner for Life” was very nearly Commissioner for Life. It is clear that over his long and rocky tenure as Commissioner of Baseball Bud Selig left a massive legacy. The business and sport of major league baseball was impacted for good and for ill by the man who began his professional life selling used cars in Milwaukee. He will end his tenure as Commissioner by becoming the …

Jim "Pee Wee" Martin, an World War II Army Veteran, parachuted into Normandy on the 70th Anniversary of the D-Day Invasion at the age of 93. Jim was in the now famous 506th parachute infantry regiment featured in the HBO miniseries Band of Brothers. He was nicknamed “Pee Wee” because he was the lightest man in the unit. At the end of the war, Jim returned to Xenia to build a house, raise a family, and live a modest life. But when Jim got online and connected with social media, his popularity reached celebrity status.
