Obrajes, Andean Workers, And The Spanish Elite: Hegemony And Hierarchy In Peru’S Late-Colonial Era, Taylor Cozzens, Dr. Jeffrey Shumway Jun 2015

Obrajes, Andean Workers, And The Spanish Elite: Hegemony And Hierarchy In Peru’S Late-Colonial Era, Taylor Cozzens, Dr. Jeffrey Shumway

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Obrajes were textile shops in early Latin America. From the mid-1500s onward, Spanish colonists in Mexico and Peru established obrajes to produce fabrics for local societies. Labor for these shops was often coerced. My research focused on the Peruvian obrajes of the late-colonial era (roughly 1770 to 1820), wherein Andean communities were required to provide tributary laborers. I specifically looked at the changing relationship between the Andean workers and the Spanish elite.

Virgin'a End: The Suppression Of The York Marian Pageants, Andrea R. Harbin Jun 2015

Virgin'a End: The Suppression Of The York Marian Pageants, Andrea R. Harbin

Medieval Feminist Forum: A Journal of Gender and Sexuality

With the rise of the Reformation in England, we see the abolishment of much of the religious drama of the late Middle Ages. The first pageants in York to fall victim to this were the pageants about Mary, which were produced by the weavers', drapers', and hostellers' guilds. While the content of the Marian pageants themselves made them a target of Reformational ire, public sentiment was still on the side of the Corpus Christi Play as a whole. Yet the guilds that produced the Marian plays were not as powerful as they had once been. All three of these trades …

Somos Indígena: Ethnic Politics And Land Tenure In New Mexico, 1694-1965, Jacobo Baca

History ETDs

This dissertation examines changes in Hispano and Pueblo Indian land tenure in the Tewa Basin of north central New Mexico across three centuries. Land grants imposed upon the Pueblo world in the Spanish colonial period limited the shrinking Pueblo population. They paradoxically protected Pueblo land from further incursions through the Mexican era. By the American territorial period, Pueblo and Hispano land grants were exposed to similar legal, political, and economic processes that dispossessed both communities of their commonly held lands. When New Mexico became a state in 1912, the federal government intervened after decades of reneging on its duty to …

Plan Perquenco And Chile's Indigenous Policies Under The Pinochet Dictatorship, 1976-1988, Scott Crago Jun 2015

Plan Perquenco And Chile's Indigenous Policies Under The Pinochet Dictatorship, 1976-1988, Scott Crago

History ETDs

This dissertation analyzes the administrative structure and development of Chiles indigenous policies under the dictatorship of Augusto Pinochet (1973-1990), taking as its focus a pilot project for indigenous Mapuche integration known as Plan Perquenco. Existing scholarship provides important analyses of the impact of the military regime's 1979 indigenous law, Decree Law 2568, which legalized the division and privatization of Mapuche communal lands. However, land division was not the sole mechanism of the regime's indigenous policy. The Ministry of Agriculture, in consultation with the United Nations' Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), designed Plan Perquenco to ensure that after land division, Mapuche …

Greetings From The Civil War Intern!, Steven J. Semmel

Blogging the Library

Hello everyone! I would like to welcome you to Musselman Library’s intern blog. I’m Steven Semmel (the big goofy guy at the bottom of the current intern’s section) and I am the Brian C. This includes diary transcriptions, digitizing, cataloging, creating displays, you name it! I am having a wonderful time so far this summer and currently working on transcribing three years’ worth of diary entries from Hoadley G. Hosford. Hosford …

Dialogical Interspecies Ethics: Ataraxia, Desire And Hope In The Post-Human World Of Anne Carson's Pastoral, Thomas Bristow Dr

The Goose

This review essay implicitly revisits human and non-human power relations within a critical animal studies context that understands the affective conjunction between the manipulation of our worlds (action, partly through knowledge) and degrees of involvement with these others that live in our worlds (comportment via emotions). I take Louise Westling’s new study as the platform for an analysis of two book-length poems, The Autobiography of Red (1998) and red doc> (2013), which centre on the life of a shepherd, Geryon. Rather than revisit classical pastoral, these texts extract power-relations that classical myth and pastoral spatialise. In so doing, I argue, …
