William Woodsum was born in 1792 in Saco, Maine, the son of John and Sarah Woodsum. In 1814 he married Rosannah Woodman and they settled in Sumner, Maine, later moving to Peru, Maine. Woodsum was ordained in 1823 as a Free Will Baptist, preaching in about 20 Maine towns. He also served in the Maine legislature in 1833 and was a selectman in Peru in 1834 and 1836.

Miriam Colwell was born in Prospect Harbor, Maine. She attended the University of Maine at Orono for a year, then moved to New York City. She returned to Prospect Harbor to become the town's postmaster at the age of 23. She published three popular novels set in Maine: Wind Off the Water (1945), Day of the Trumpet (1947), and Young (1955). Contentment Cove, written in the 1950s, was published in 2006.

Chenoweth Hall was born and raised in New Albany, Indiana. She left to attend the University of Wisconsin in Madison, Wisconsin where she received her degree in musicology. …

The collection contains two daybooks maintained between 1764 and 1839 by Daniel Bucknam and his sons, Shepherd and Calvin Bucknam, of Minot, Maine. The books contain itemized accounts of goods and services sold by the Bucknams and reflect the use of trade and barter in their lives.

The first volume was used mostly by Daniel Bucknam, although the inclusion of later dates probably indicates that it was used by Daniel's sons as well. The second volume has the name Calvin Bucknam written on the inside cover and contains some biographical information about Calvin and his family.

The collection contains personal papers of Clarence C. Stetson. No papers from his career in government service are found in the collection.

The file of correspondence, 1919-1921, contains incoming and outgoing letters about Stetson's investments and other financial matters. The business correspondence folders deal primarily with management of his timberland holdings and tax, policy, and investment issues surrounding them. Correspondents include Merrill Griswold, Isaiah K. Stetson, and Charles Stetson, an attorney in Boston. The files of receipts, 1920-1921, are all for personal expenses and purchases, such as hotels, automobiles and clothing.

Remick family papers include items that date to the late 17th century. Most of the papers concern Oliver P. Remick and his service in the U.S. Revenue Cutter Service, forerunner of the U.S. Coast Guard, from 1876-1895. The collection contains correspondence, legal documents, and other personal papers of several individuals who lived in Exeter, Maine in the 19th and 20th centuries. Included are 19th century materials of Nathaniel Oaks, Matthew Hedges, Benjamin Evans, Benjamin Evans, Jr., and Samuel Cortland and 20th century papers of Chalma and Eva Cooley and Eva Martin. The relationship among these individuals is unclear.

The collection also contains various materials which cannot be linked to any particular individual; these include accounts of wages paid for farm work, advertisements, printed pamphlets and postcards.

The title page of the first diary has the notation: "Some of the little incidents that have occurred in the life of R.V. Hayden." The diaries give very detailed information about Hayden's daily life, including the weather, his varied work activities, and local and national events. Information about the lives and deaths of his friends and neighbors in Robbinston, Perry, and Eastport, Maine is also noted.
