Finding Aids

William Woodsum was born in 1792 in Saco, Maine, the son of John and Sarah Woodsum. In 1814 he married Rosannah Woodman and they settled in Sumner, Maine, later moving to Peru, Maine. Woodsum was ordained in 1823 as a Free Will Baptist, preaching in about 20 Maine towns. He also served in the Maine legislature in 1833 and was a selectman in Peru in 1834 and 1836.

Collection contains personal papers of Clarine Coffin Grenfell. It includes correspondence, 1927-1997, the early part of which consists of love letters to and from suitors and from her future husband, Rev. Jack Grenfell. It also includes a scrapbook and other memorabilia from her time as a student at the University of Maine; family photographs, 1928-1990s; teacher's contracts and other work documents; memorabilia; and information about Grenfell's honorary degree from the University of Maine.

Miriam Colwell was born in Prospect Harbor, Maine. She attended the University of Maine at Orono for a year, then moved to New York City. She returned to Prospect Harbor to become the town's postmaster at the age of 23. She published three popular novels set in Maine: Wind Off the Water (1945), Day of the Trumpet (1947), and Young (1955). Contentment Cove, written in the 1950s, was published in 2006.

Chenoweth Hall was born and raised in New Albany, Indiana. She left to attend the University of Wisconsin in Madison, Wisconsin where she received her degree in musicology. …

Featured most prominently in the collection are letters, receipts, and essays of John Stuart Barrows from 1816 to 1848 and letters of George B. Barrows, 1833-1898. The collection contains two daybooks maintained between 1764 and 1839 by Daniel Bucknam and his sons, Shepherd and Calvin Bucknam, of Minot, Maine. The books contain itemized accounts of goods and services sold by the Bucknams and reflect the use of trade and barter in their lives.

The first volume was used mostly by Daniel Bucknam, although the inclusion of later dates probably indicates that it was used by Daniel's sons as well. The second volume has the name Calvin Bucknam written on the inside cover and contains some biographical information about Calvin and his family.

Contains papers of various members of the Talbot family as well as papers written or collected by Henry Smith Whittier. Papers are extensively annotated by Barbara Talbot Whittier. Talbot family papers are arranged chronologically by family member and include minutes, 1811-1842, of the East Machias Social Library with which Peter Talbot was associated; Talbot family letters; documents associated with Frederic Talbot including a diary, 1849-1851; and Talbot family photographs and genealogical information. Also includes documents associated with Stephen C. Talbot's military service in the Civil War and a pocket diary, 1862, of Samuel Hammond Talbot.

The collection contains personal papers of Clarence C. Stetson. No papers from his career in government service are found in the collection.

The file of correspondence, 1919-1921, contains incoming and outgoing letters about Stetson's investments and other financial matters. The business correspondence folders deal primarily with management of his timberland holdings and tax, policy, and investment issues surrounding them. Correspondents include Merrill Griswold, Isaiah K. Stetson, and Charles Stetson, an attorney in Boston. The files of receipts, 1920-1921, are all for personal expenses and purchases, such as hotels, automobiles and clothing.

Finding Aids

Remick family papers include items that date to the late 17th century. Most of the papers concern Oliver P. Remick and his service in the U.S. Revenue Cutter Service, forerunner of the U.S. Coast Guard, from 1876-1895. Included are some earlier and later family materials, and historical Revenue Cutter Service materials. Also contains unpublished manuscripts of Martha Remick.

The collection contains correspondence, legal documents, and other personal papers of several individuals who lived in Exeter, Maine in the 19th and 20th centuries. Included are 19th century materials of Nathaniel Oaks, Matthew Hedges, Benjamin Evans, Benjamin Evans, Jr., and Samuel Cortland and 20th century papers of Chalma and Eva Cooley and Eva Martin. The relationship among these individuals is unclear.

The collection also contains various materials which cannot be linked to any particular individual; these include accounts of wages paid for farm work, advertisements, printed pamphlets and postcards.

The collection consists of diaries kept by Richard V. Hayden from 1821 through 1867. The title page of the first diary has the notation: "Some of the little incidents that have occurred in the life of R.V. Hayden." The diaries give very detailed information about Hayden's daily life, including the weather, his varied work activities, and local and national events. Information about the lives and deaths of his friends and neighbors in Robbinston, Perry, and Eastport, Maine is also noted. Collection contains papers collected by Allen Goodwin including historical and genealogical information about his home town of Palermo, Maine, as well as surrounding towns such as Montville and Liberty. Information on Hibbert's Gore and the towns of Montville, Hope, Palermo, Freedom, and China, as well Waldo County, Maine is included. Also includes data on the families Pearson, Cushman, Carr, Rowe, Soule, Nelson, Foster, Bradstreet, Bryant, Marden, Black, Webster, and Worthing. Also contains a history of the Palermo Baptist Church and the Coolidge murder case at Waterville, September 1847.

Notebooks dating from 1924-1961 kept by Guy Kendall about race horses and harness racing in Maine and New Hampshire. A few notebooks also have information about races in Connecticut and Massachusetts. The notebooks include photographs of the horses and drivers, racing programs listing the horses in each race and notes on how the horses placed in the races. The notebooks are arranged chronologically.

The collection contains material from Clinton Cole's years as a student at the University of Maine, including diaries from 1898 and 1899, memorabilia from his social activities at the university, lecture notes and photographs.
