Goodell's Press Conference, Richard C. Crepeau Sep 2014

Goodell's Press Conference, Richard C. Crepeau

On Sport and Society

After last week’s debacles in the NFL and Goodell’s retreat into a cave somewhere, I read a number of references to Goodell as a Nixonian figure. These were amusing and vaguely resonant. Then came Friday’s Follies as Goodell surfaced publicly and assured us that he would not resign, that he would get it right, and that the NFL remained a moral leader that America could count on.

The Mechanisms Of The Optional Protocol To The Genocide Convention And Its Links To R2p, Jean-François Bussière-Wallot Sep 2014

The Mechanisms Of The Optional Protocol To The Genocide Convention And Its Links To R2p, Jean-François Bussière-Wallot

Jan Karski Conference

The Optional Protocol to the Genocide Convention was drafted taking into account the UN Charter and practice to fit neatly into the UN and regional system. This is done by respecting the various roles and powers assigned to the General Assembly, the Security Council and the Regional Organizations under the UN Charter. The specific roles of each under the Protocol will be discussed, as well as the specific mechanisms for Regional Organizations under Article 5. The decision-making on genocide and its preparatory steps under Article 3, working in conjunction with Article 4, creates an obligation to act on normally non-binding …

The Shadow Of The World War Ii Experience: Twentieth Century European Atrocities Before, During And After The Holocaust, John J. Kurowski Sep 2014

The Shadow Of The World War Ii Experience: Twentieth Century European Atrocities Before, During And After The Holocaust, John J. Kurowski

Jan Karski Conference

This past June I was watching NBC’s coverage of the 70th anniversary of D-Day. Tom Brokaw poignantly commented that for most of the 80 and 90 year old veterans present, it was likely their last decade anniversary appearance. More importantly he also said that after having been at many of these decade appearances, he felt perhaps that this year, the 70th anniversary, caused us to want to know more about the war and the twentieth century than ever before. Understanding the Holocaust and atrocities in Poland and eastern Europe has been an evolutionary process for me as with many people. …

Enhanced Interrogation: Torture Policies Of The United States, Philip A. Quigley Sep 2014

Enhanced Interrogation: Torture Policies Of The United States, Philip A. Quigley

e-Research: A Journal of Undergraduate Work

Over the last decade the US Government has worked tirelessly to combat terrorists, insurgents, and those who intend harm to the US, its interests, and its allies and their interests. The US Military and the US Intelligence Community have used many tactics as part of a more complex strategy for waging a worldwide war against al-Qaeda, other terrorist organizations, and their base of support. No tactic has garnered as much public attention, media outcry, and political debate as the use of torture, or more euphemistically referred to in US Government documents, "enhanced interrogation." The use of this tactic has strained …

Goodell's Quagmire, Richard C. Crepeau Sep 2014

Goodell's Quagmire, Richard C. Crepeau

On Sport and Society

The continuing saga of the NFL and Ray Rice has now become basically the Roger Goodell story. The Commissioner has not managed to stay ahead of the news cycle and has failed to cut his losses. Rather than to accept responsibility for his mistakes and missteps he has continued to deal in what now seems to be his only task as Commissioner, to Protect the Shield. And it’s not going well.
