Reacting To The Past: The French Revolution From The Eyes Of History Students, Khristina May, Stephanie Thompson, Brent Wacho
Armstrong Undergraduate Journal of History
From the Editorial Introduction:
Dr. Allison Belzer, Assistant Professor of History, began to utilize the “Rousseau, Burke, and Revolution in France, 1791” text in her Civilization classes and Modern France course. The students accepted the challenge and put forward remarkable work, far more insightful than seen in traditional lecture formats. The students were all assigned roles within the factions Jacobin, Noble, Clergy, Moderates, the crowd, and individual characters like King Louis XVI, Marquis de Lafayette, lawyer, doctor, journalist, and rural delegate. Every group was given delegates and power just as they were historically distributed. The students got a chance to …

The Spatial Turn Of Social And Cultural History: A Review Of The Current Field, Fiona Williamson
The Spatial Turn Of Social And Cultural History: A Review Of The Current Field, Fiona Williamson
Research Collection College of Integrative Studies
In 2010 Ralph Kingston highlighted how history’s ‘rediscovery of space and place’was firmly on the agenda for the twenty-first century. 1 Four years on this article asks whether Kingston’s claim is still valid or whether historians’ passion for all things spatial has run its course. This article reviews five recent collections of essays connected by themes of urban space and place, and asks how far the exploration of space as a way of understanding the past is still proving an embryonic and constructive way of approaching the past.
Henry Wirz And The Tragedy Of Andersonville: A Question Of Responsibility, Albert Winkler
Henry Wirz And The Tragedy Of Andersonville: A Question Of Responsibility, Albert Winkler
Faculty Publications
Henry Wirz was the most controversial Swiss American. Born in Zurich, Wirz migrated to the United States and joined the Confederacy at the outbreak of the Civil War. He was assigned to oversee the military prison at Andersonville, Georgia, which had a very high death rate. Following the war, Wirz was arrested and tried for war crimes. The trial was a travesty of justice. Many of his supposed crimes were milder punishments than the Union inflicted on its own soldiers. The court allowed hearsay evidence, Wirz was no allowed to call key witnesses for his defense, and many leaders of …

The Promise Of The Digital Humanities And The Contested Nature Of Digital Scholarship, William G. Thomas Iii
The Promise Of The Digital Humanities And The Contested Nature Of Digital Scholarship, William G. Thomas Iii
Department of History: Faculty Publications
This essay examines the contested qualities of digital scholarship and why, paradoxically, the twenty-year surge in the digital humanities--from 1993 to 2013--has produced relatively little interpretive or argumentative scholarship. In this first phase of the digital humanities, scholars produced innovative and sophisticated hybrid works of scholarship, blending archives, tools, commentaries, data collections, and visualizations. For the most part in the disciplines, however, few of these works have been reviewed or critiqued. Because the disciplines expect interpretation, argument, and criticism, it could be argued that digital humanists have not produced enough digital interpretive scholarship and what we have produced has not …
Seduced By The “Dark Turn”, S. Marianne Johnson
Seduced By The “Dark Turn”, S. Marianne Johnson
The Gettysburg Compiler: On the Front Lines of History
Last year, I attended a Civil War Conference that highlighted what has become known as the “Dark Turn of the Civil War.” Basically, the turn is a shift in focus from the shiny-bugles-and-gleaming-bayonets interpretation of the Civil War to revealing the ugly underside of the Civil War, emphasizing themes of death, destruction, and loss. At the time, I remember thinking, this is a good thing, Civil War history does tend to be overly romanticized as the glorious American tragedy. One panel that bothered me, however, featured a discussion on “Dark Tourism.” I had never heard of Dark Tourism, and I …

The Gettysburg Compiler: On the Front Lines of History
The story I am about to tell is entirely true. Several weeks ago, as I departed Musselman Library after a long night of intensive research, a sudden presence roused me from my intellectual exhaustion. I was chilled to the bone as they appeared before me: shadowy figures silhouetted against the dimly lit façade of our beloved administration building. Now, I had, of course, heard of the campus’ hauntings. Tales of the ghostly field hospital in Penn Hall’s basement, the spectral sentry watching from its cupola, and the Blue Boy of Stevens Hall are well known stories throughout our campus community …
Incontinentia, Licentia Et Libido: The Juxtaposition Of Morality And Sexuality During The Roman Republic, Robert Sharp
Incontinentia, Licentia Et Libido: The Juxtaposition Of Morality And Sexuality During The Roman Republic, Robert Sharp
James Madison Undergraduate Research Journal (JMURJ)
Sex and sexuality are important elements of the human experience but are surrounded by various taboos. Roman sexuality has traditionally been viewed in a modern context as being licentious and obscene in nature, and seemingly incongruous with the elements of propriety that are expected in an honor-shame culture. What would be considered to be moral, immoral, or obscene in a modern context would not apply to the Romans as we would understand it in a modern context. This paper examines Roman sexuality during the Republic period (509 - 27 BCE) and how they can seemingly exist alongside what can be …
