'Started to Manila', headlined the Oregonian newspaper on 18 August 1898, 'Two Portland Nurses Take Their Leave.' Dr. Frances Woods, along with fellow Portland, Oregon resident Lena Killiam, was on her way to the Philippines to serve in the Spanish-American War. Eager to take part, but knowing she would never be allowed to go as a woman doctor, Dr. Woods grasped the option of volunteering as a nurse. 'I feel just as patriotic and earnest as a man', she declared. 'But, you know, they have a way of turning aside lady physicians and giving men the first chances to go …

Cult, Continuity, And Social Memory: Mycenaean Eleusis And The Transition To The Early Iron Age, Michael B. Cosmopoulos
Cult, Continuity, And Social Memory: Mycenaean Eleusis And The Transition To The Early Iron Age, Michael B. Cosmopoulos
Educator Preparation & Leadership Faculty Works
Religious continuity from the Mycenaean to the Geometric period is one of the thorniest issues in Greek archaeology. The problems created by the scantiness of the evidence are compounded by our own methodological pitfalls, especially the ambiguity of the term "continuity." The Sanctuary of Demeter and Kore at Eleusis is a controversial case of a major Greek sanctuary for which a Mycenaean ancestry has been claimed but seriously debated. In this article, the architectural, stratigraphic, and ceramic evidence related to the Mycenaean Megaron B is analyzed on the basis of the unpublished finds and excavation notebooks. The analysis shows that …

The Road To Rebellion, Erik J. Chaput, Russell J. Desimone
Dorr Scholarship
In this essay, Dr. Erik J. Chaput and Russell DeSimone examine and contextualize the events surrounding the Dorr Rebellion of 1842 and the consequences that followed for those involved, primarily Providence attorney Thomas Wilson Dorr, who was the figurehead of one of the most significant constitutional reform efforts in antebellum American history. This essay, along with a collection of letters it accompanies on our Dorr Rebellion Letters project site, examines the momentous importance of the rebellion in terms of local Rhode Island history and national constitutional reform.

The Road Not Taken: John Brown Francis And The Dorr Rebellion, Erik J. Chaput, Russell J. Desimone
Dorr Scholarship
In this contextualizing essay, Dr. Erik J. Chaput and Russell DeSimone examine historical opposing views to Providence attorney Thomas Wilson Dorr and his attempt to reform the state's archaic governing structure in the spring of 1842. Chief among these views is that of former Governor John Brown Francis, who urged both sides to find a compromise with each other. The essay, along with a collection of letters it accompanies on our Dorr Rebellion Letters project site, elucidates how the moderate faction within the Law and Order party; had this moderate voice been heeded Rhode Island’s Dorr Rebellion would have turned …

Perhaps the best place to begin is with two brief conversations that took place after one of my classes. In the first, a student told me that his family recently sold a part of their portion. Here in the Rio Grande Valley of Texas and México, the term “portion” refers to a grant of land of at least 4,428 acres given to the Spanish settlers who first came to this Valley during the 1750s and 1760s. 1 So this student, barely into his twenties, formed part of a link extending back for more than a quarter of millennium and which …

Family, Property, And Negotiations Of Authority: Francoise Brulart And The Estate Management Of Noble Women In Early Modern Burgundy, Amy Kathleen Rogers Dean

There is no question that early modern France was a patriarchal society. In fact, during this period, there was an increase in legislation further subordinating women under the authority of their fathers and then of their husbands. The legal identities of women as daughters and wives was officially negligible. However, this dissertation argues that in practice, family needs trumped the constricting legal prescriptions placed upon women. In examining the estate accounts, contracts, and family papers of the Saulx-Tavanes, Brulart, Le Goux, Joly, Marmier, and Baissey families, it is abundantly clear that women of both the noblesse de robe and noblesse …

When Harvard Said No To Eugenics: The J. Ewing Mears Bequest, 1927, Paul A. Lombardo
Faculty Publications By Year
James Ewing Mears (1838-1919) was a founding member of the Philadelphia Academy of Surgery. His 1910 book, The Problem of Race Betterment, laid the groundwork for later authors to explore the uses of surgical sterilization as a eugenic measure. Mears left $60,000 in his will to Harvard University to support the teaching of eugenics. Although numerous eugenic activists were on the Harvard faculty, and who of its Presidents were also associated with the eugenics movement, Harvard refused the Mears gift. The bequest was eventually awarded to Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia. This article explains why Harvard turned its back …

French And Indian Cruelty? The Fate Of The Oswego Prisoners Of War, 1756-1758, Timothy J. Shannon
History Faculty Publications
This article examines what happened to approximately 1,200 prisoners of war taken by the French and their Indian allies at the British post Fort Oswego in August 1756. Their experiences illuminated the contrast between traditional methods of warfare in colonial America and the new rules of war being introduced by European armies fighting in the French and Indian War. Although European armies claimed to treat POWs more humanely than Native Americans, their supposedly civilized rules of warfare actually increased the suffering of the Oswego prisoners.

Our barely functioning Congress seems to embody the issues that this conference on constitutional dysfunction is meant to address. At this moment, however, congressional disarray may result less from institutional design than from our lasting heritage of white supremacy. Republican control of the House owes much to the party's Southern Strategy, which has exploited widespread dissatisfaction with the Democrats' official renunciation of racial stratification. That challenge to the American Way is exacerbated by the idea, outrageous to some, of a black President. That context has some bearing on this Symposium's topic of federalism. For, as Professor Larry Yackle reminds us, …
