Eschatological Avengers Or Messianic Saviors? Violence And Physical Strength In The Vernacular Legend Of The Red Jews, Rebekka Voss
Eschatological Avengers Or Messianic Saviors? Violence And Physical Strength In The Vernacular Legend Of The Red Jews, Rebekka Voss
Early Modern Workshop: Resources in Jewish History
The vernacular legend of the Red Jews allows us to explore the relationship of violence, physical strength and power during the early modern period, extending the traditional treatment of Jews and violence in that era. Violence is often linked to power and physical strength. Violence is typically associated with ruling authorities and the realm of the majority, rather than in the hands of an oppressed minority, as in case of Diaspora Jewry, which has been identified with victimhood. Moreover, in historiography, the perception of Jews as targets of aggression perpetrated by “the other,” whether Christian or Muslim, corresponds to the …

Early Modern Workshop: Resources in Jewish History
The 2013 Early Modern Workshop on “Jews and Violence in the Early Modern Period” sought to contextualize the violence involving Jews in the early modern period in order to understand this crucial aspect of their experience. Participating scholars tried to complicate not only the over-simplified notion of Jews as solely victims of violence in the premodern period, but also examined complexities of the question of Jews as victims of violence.

Democratic Teaching In Byu’S American Heritage Course: Teaching Citizenship While Improving Learning, Olivia Dahl, Dr. J. Gary Daynes
Journal of Undergraduate Research
Democratic teaching is a topic that is popular among educators. What it essentially means is that students are given opportunities to choose how and possibly what they learn. A major concern in the social sciences is how well schools and universities are preparing students to become responsible and contributing citizens. Dr. J. Gary Daynes and his staff considered these two issues-democratic education and teaching citizenship-in designing the curriculum and teaching methods of an experimental section of American Heritage at BYU in the Winter Semester of 2000.

Kizimkazi Dimbani is a village of just over 1500 people on the southern end of the island of Zanzibar, which is about 50 miles off of the coast of Tanzania. In the fall of 1998 I went to Zanzibar with a group of seven BYU students under the International Study Programs Office in the Kennedy Center. The group performed a variety of research projects including topics focusing on health, conservation biology, village economics, education, and anthropology. My project was based on a study of the relationship between the kinship and political systems of the village. Through our research we were …

“Mommy, Where Do Daddies Come From?”: The Media’S Portrayal Of Wwii Fathers, Melissa Brown, Dr. Mark Grandstaff
Journal of Undergraduate Research
Betty Friedan, in her book, The Feminine Mystique argues that men shape women’s roles through the media, but at some points in time, the reverse has been true. During WWII, Parents’ Magazine, with it’s almost all-woman editorial board and largely female readership produced more articles on fatherhood than all the other parenting magazines put together. As the war dawned, many fathers left to fight, removing the buffering force that kept the magazine’s portrayal of the father’s role grounded in a reality. As a result, during the war years, Parents’ Magazine’s portrayal of fathers changed, as this analysis of over one …

Stuff White People Like #1863, Joseph Stephen Slowinski
SURGE
There I sat: sun burning my neck, sweat pouring down my face, watching grown men play at death. I’d been meaning for years to get to Gettysburg to see the reenactment, and this past July, I was lucky enough to be there for the 150th anniversary of the battle. And so there I was, sitting in a grandstand in the middle of a farm in rural Pennsylvania, surrounded by fellow white people, watching a Confederate soldier get shot in the back for pretending to desert in the face of the Union cavalry. He flopped to the ground in front of …

As most of my research tends to do, this project took quite a different turn then originally intended. I intended this research to continue on with the topic of my senior thesis concerning the political activism of women in Utah during the 1920s by adding a different layer to the picture. In my research prior to this, I looked at Utah women in general without really looking at how religious convictions played into the equation. I intended this project to fill in this gap and to produce something I could add to my previous work. As it turns out, this …

Veterinary Medicine, Jeffrey Tucker, Dr. Michael Mackay
Veterinary Medicine, Jeffrey Tucker, Dr. Michael Mackay
Journal of Undergraduate Research
It is not an overstatement to claim that the work Dr. Michael MacKay and I were able to conduct through the benevolence of the ORCA programme represents the cutting of history of medicine research. We have engaged a field that is strikingly underdeveloped, yet extremely relevant to early modern history. Within the last five years the World Association for the History of Veterinary Medicine has fostered new interests in veterinary history throughout this world. Our scholarship questions current interpretations of the emergence of veterinary science and demonstrates that through the creation of organized horse hospitals systematized veterinary medicine developed almost …
