Review: 'Godly Ambition: John Stott And The Evangelical Movement', William Vance Trollinger

History Faculty Publications

In 2005, Time included John Stott in its list of the world’s 100 most influential people, describing Stott as both a “touchstone of authentic biblical scholarship that has scarcely been paralleled since the days of the 16th-century European Reformers” as well as “a significant factor in the explosive growth of Christianity in parts of the Third World.” With this, Alister Chapman begins Godly Ambition, a compact analysis of Stott’s career that certainly does justice to this extraordinarily significant figure in late twentieth- and early twenty-first-century global evangelicalism.

Thanks in good part to Chapman’s access to Stott’s personal papers (Stott died …

Between Stonewall And Aids: Initial Efforts To Establish Gay And Lesbian Social Services, Michael G. Lee Sep 2013

Between Stonewall And Aids: Initial Efforts To Establish Gay And Lesbian Social Services, Michael G. Lee

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

Little has been written about gay and lesbian communities' efforts to address health and human service concerns prior to the HIV/AIDS crisis. This article analyzes content from The Advocate along with organizational documents from the early 1970s to explore the health issues addressed by these fledgling providers. Major concerns identified include social adjustment to a gay or lesbian identity, chemical health, sexual health, and family supports. These findings depict a service context strained by funding instability, workplace turmoil, neighborhood hostility, and high levels of consumer needs that would later come to characterize the complex nature of AIDS service work.

Rice And Magic: A Cultural History From The Precolonial World To The Present, Filomeno V. Aguilar Jr Sep 2013

Rice And Magic: A Cultural History From The Precolonial World To The Present, Filomeno V. Aguilar Jr

History Department Faculty Publications

Beliefs in rice spirits were integral to the magical worldview of the precolonial inhabitants of the Philippine islands. Under Spanish colonialism, rice became a staple but it underwent disenchantment and symbolic marginality. By the 1870s rice production fell short relative to demand. Twentieth-century initiatives to address persistent shortages culminated in the 1960s Green Revolution, which further altered the rice plant and ushered in the age of practicality. Because rice production cannot be fully controlled, farmers still deploy culturally meaningful strategies to deal with uncertainties. The old meanings of rice for commensality have also proven resilient and reveal peculiarly Filipino ways.

Preventing Revolution: Cato Street, Bonnymuir, And Cathkin, John Gardner

Studies in Scottish Literature

Argues, from a range of evidence including popular poetry and woodcuts, that popular risings in 1820 in Scotland, England, and Ireland were produced as a coordinated strategy by central government in the aftermath of Peterloo to instigate (through agents provocateurs) local popular uprisings and then brutally suppress them, with show trials and public executions, in order to deter or forestall larger social unrest or revolution.

The Rediscovered Road To Santiago De Compostela: The Economic Impact Of Modern Pilgrimage, Joseph Wood, Dr. Kendal Brown Aug 2013

The Rediscovered Road To Santiago De Compostela: The Economic Impact Of Modern Pilgrimage, Joseph Wood, Dr. Kendal Brown

Journal of Undergraduate Research

The pilgrimage to the tomb of St. James in Santiago de Compostela was proclaimed the first European Cultural itinerary by the Council of Europe in 1987. Six years later, UNESCO designated the pilgrimage route a World Heritage Site for its cultural significance during the Middle Ages. In addition to encouraging cultural exchanges in Spain, the medieval pilgrimage had significant economic and political consequences. During the last two decades of the twentieth century, the pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela experienced a dramatic rediscovery. Once again, thousands of pilgrims began to make the journey across northern Spain to visit the tomb of …

“The 3 Dear Babes”: Kinship And Childhood In Eighteenth-Century England, Ardis Smith, Dr. Amy Harris Aug 2013

“The 3 Dear Babes”: Kinship And Childhood In Eighteenth-Century England, Ardis Smith, Dr. Amy Harris

Journal of Undergraduate Research

In eighteenth-century England, kin relationships were an integral part of life for men and women of all classes. Primary sources from the period show that contrary to the postulations of some historians, kinship had a significant societal impact on men, women, and children of the period, and that the relationships between members of extended familial networks were rich and were built upon mutual cooperation and emotional attachment. With my ORCA research, I have learned about the significance of the kin relationships in eighteenth-century England. Specifically focusing on the relationships between adult kin (aunts and uncles) and their younger relatives (nieces …

From William Jennings Bryan To George Walker Bush: The Development Of Political Ideology And Party Membership In The Mountain West, Verlan Lewis, Dr. Brian Cannon Aug 2013

From William Jennings Bryan To George Walker Bush: The Development Of Political Ideology And Party Membership In The Mountain West, Verlan Lewis, Dr. Brian Cannon

Journal of Undergraduate Research

The Mountain West is the fastest-growing region in the country, and it is becoming increasingly important to national politics. For only the third time in history of the U.S. Congress, the Senate Majority Leader is currently from the Mountain West. In the 2004 presidential election, George W. Bush was only able to win the election because of the unanimous support of the Mountain West states. (Between the other 42 states of the Union, John Kerry won the election). The Mountain West is becoming increasingly important in determining the shape of the U.S. Congress and Presidency, and as such is becoming …

Religious Restoration In Cuba: A Profile Of Faith On The Island, Bryan S. Bendall, Dr. Jeffrey M. Shumway

Journal of Undergraduate Research

On January 1, 1959, armored tanks of Fidel Castro’s rebel army paraded down the streets of Havana, Cuba promising reforms and change in the island nation. For many of Cuba’s religious adherents this came in the form of repression and persecution. Castro began his attack on religion in 1961 by forcing Cuba most powerful clergymen into exile in a series of despotic reforms meant to cripple the powerful influence of the Catholic Church. Thereafter, Castro was excommunicated by the Vatican but persecutions continued as the government discriminated against all Cuban church members by denying them jobs, excluding them from government …
