Martin L. Stoever: Moving His Abolition Needle, John M. Rudy

Interpreting the Civil War: Connecting the Civil War to the American Public

Two letters appeared in the Lutheran and Missionary in the late summer of 1864 signed, "M.L.S."

The summer session had ended at Pennsylvania College. The campus was quiet, the classrooms were empty. For professors at the college, the brief breaks between semesters were a much-needed respite from the daily grind of professorial life. Any sane professor would use the few brief moments to unwind. Man’S Quest For Freedom: A Case Study Of The Belgian Patriot Count Egmont, Benjamin A. Johnson, Dr. Donald Harreld Oct 2013

Man’S Quest For Freedom: A Case Study Of The Belgian Patriot Count Egmont, Benjamin A. Johnson, Dr. Donald Harreld

Journal of Undergraduate Research

My goal was to investigate the significance of the beheading of Count Lamoral Egmont, a popular Dutch patriot who opposed foreign Spanish rule in Brussels in the late sixteenth century. Egmont, chief magistrate of the southern Netherlands, stood for tolerating Protestants and was executed for opposing the Spanish overlords. Egmont’s death largely mobilized the Dutch speaking peoples’ desire for independence from Philip II, the Spanish king.

Most Maimonides: A Study Of How Islamic Society Helped To Produce Judaism’S Most Influential Philosopher Of The Middle Ages, James Duncan Gilchrist, Dr. Glen Cooper

Journal of Undergraduate Research

Mahmood Darwiish, a contemporary Palestinian poet, described what Al-Andalus (an area of Muslim Spain, now called Andalusia) meant to its last inhabitants before the Spanish reconquista, in his poem, In the Last Night upon this Land. He describes it as a beautiful country of mountains and clouds, on the brink of occupation by invaders from afar. Although a long siege had been fought, fate ultimately transferred ownership to the invaders. Unprepared to depart, yet forced to by circumstances, Darwish offers a strange hospitality to the invaders as if he himself was a resident at the time. He invites them to …

You Can’T Fire Me; I Quit! South Africa And The Common Wealth Nations, Audrey Spear, Dr. Douglas F. Tobler Oct 2013

You Can’T Fire Me; I Quit! South Africa And The Common Wealth Nations, Audrey Spear, Dr. Douglas F. Tobler

Journal of Undergraduate Research

On March 3, 1961, the South African Prime Minister, Dr. Hendrik Verwoerd, departed for a Commonwealth Prime Ministers’ Conference in London in high spirits. By 1961, the inclusion of independent states in the British Commonwealth of Nations was an established principle, and there was no reason to suppose that they would deny South Africa membership in that body because of her new republican status. Nevertheless, he returned later that same month, having withdrawn South Africa’s applications for membership. This was merely one step in South Africa’s troubled path from a pillar of the Allied cause to a pariah in international …

Is Jefferson A Founding Father Of Democratic Education? A Response To "Jefferson And The Ideology Of Democratic Schooling", Johann Neem

Democracy & Education

This response argues that it is reasonable to consider Thomas Jefferson a proponent of democratic education. It suggests that Jefferson's education proposals sought to ensure the wide distribution of knowledge and that Jefferson's legacy remains important to us today.

“Wrecked Cars And Suffering Humanity”: The Fortunes Of The 33rd Illinois, Bryan G. Caswell

The Gettysburg Compiler: On the Front Lines of History

The men of the 33rd Illinois Volunteer Infantry were out of their minds with boredom in the closing months of 1864. Those veterans who remained from the campaigns of the year before could recall the proud service of their regiment. Mustered into service at Camp Butler, Illinois in September of 1861, the 33rd has spent the first year of its war fighting minor skirmishes in the trans-Mississippi theater. Then, in the late fall of 1862, the 33rd Illinois was transferred to the First Brigade, First Division, XIII Corps of the Army of the Tennessee. [excerpt]

America's Pastime: Base Ball's Battlefields, John M. Rudy

Interpreting the Civil War: Connecting the Civil War to the American Public

Somewhere in a field just north of the Pennsylvania College campus, a hurler threw a ball to a striker. The air was undoubtedly crisp. Novembers in Gettysburg can be cool. The local papers were already predicting that the winter of 1865-66 would come on early and bitter. Standing on the bases, men readied to run home and score another point for their team. [excerpt]

Can’T Buy Me Love: The Importation And Impact Of Hollywood Films In The Gdr In The 1970s, Gerd Horten

CUP Faculty Research

Still riding high on the wave of international recognition and athletic successes of the early 1970s, East Germany celebrated another first in late 1975. In the latter part of November 1975, the first Film Week of the German Democratic Republic (GDR) was held in the United States, hosted by the Museum of Modern Art in New York City. Twenty-one East German films were exhibited to American audiences, many of them for the first time. Six years in the making and coming just one year after the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries, this was clearly a momentous occasion …
