Toeing The Line Between Offense And Education, Natalie S. Sherif Oct 2013

Toeing The Line Between Offense And Education, Natalie S. Sherif

Blogging the Library

Medical history can be gruesome. People shy away from blood and guts and images of death perhaps because it makes us question our own mortality or perhaps because it reminds us a bit too much about the origins of that hamburger we ate for lunch. Whatever the reason, a lot of humans cannot stomach the truly heinous. [excerpt]

Gender And The Fate Of Julian’S Short Text, Rebecca June Oct 2013

Gender And The Fate Of Julian’S Short Text, Rebecca June

Medieval Feminist Forum: A Journal of Gender and Sexuality

Gender and the Fate of Julian’s Short Text Most studies of Julian of Norwich’s Showings juxtapose her Short and Long texts, with a marked lack of enthusiasm for the Short Text in contrast to its longer, revised form thought to be textually and theologically superior. This essay asks what is at stake in the rigorous defense of Julian’s Long Text and argues that the issue of gender is central both to its revisions and to its favorable reception. The most noted revision related to gender in the Long Text is the addition of its maternal Jesus, characterized as redemptive of …

Par Fiance Bien Tenir: Medieval Same-Sex Kinship And Sworn Brotherhood In Le Roman De Thèbes, Elizabeth Hubble

Medieval Feminist Forum: A Journal of Gender and Sexuality

Par fiance bien tenir: Medieval Same-Sex Kinship and Sworn Brotherhood in Le Roman de Thèbes This article adds to the growing archive on medieval same-sex unions by examining an overlooked scene in an often overlooked early medieval French romance, the mid-twelfth-century Roman de Thèbes. An Old French rewriting of Statius’ Latin epic, The Thebaid, Thèbes features a formal ceremony of sworn brotherhood between two of the main characters, the knights Polynices and Tydeus. In contrast to the slightly later Roman d’Enéas, Thèbes does not counter such same-sex bonds with a heterosexual love relationship. Rather, Thèbes posits competing constructions of masculinity …

Richard D. Dunphy And The Prices And Prizes Of War, Kevin P. Lavery Oct 2013

Richard D. Dunphy And The Prices And Prizes Of War, Kevin P. Lavery

The Gettysburg Compiler: On the Front Lines of History

Like many immigrants during the mid-nineteenth century, Irishman Richard D. Dunphy served his new country in the Civil War, albeit not entirely willingly. The wounds he sustained during the war were grave, including the loss of both arms. He received some reward for his sacrifice from his country: a monthly pension, a Medal of Honor, and a notability lacked by other faceless coal heavers. As with other great conflicts, the war played a pivotal role in the lives of its participants, especially in the case of Richard Dunphy. [excerpt]

Weimar Jewish Chic: Jewish Women And Fashion In 1920s Germany, Kerry Wallach

German Studies Faculty Publications

This volume presents papers delivered at the 24th Annual Klutznick-Harris Symposium, held at Creighton University in October 2011. The contributors look at all aspects of the intimate relationship between Jews and clothing, through case studies from ancient, medieval, recent, and contemporary history. Papers explore topics ranging from Jewish leadership in the textile industry, through the art of fashion in nineteenth century Vienna, to the use of clothing as a badge of ethnic identity, in both secular and religious contexts. Dr. Kerry Wallach's chapter examines the uniquely Jewish engagement with fashion and attire in Weimar, Germany.

The Marginalization Of Eastern European Women Migrating To The West, Mirlinda Qerama Caton, Dr. Mark Choate Oct 2013

The Marginalization Of Eastern European Women Migrating To The West, Mirlinda Qerama Caton, Dr. Mark Choate

Journal of Undergraduate Research

When communism collapsed in Albania, in 1991, thousands of men and women left the country in search of a better life. This migration flow increased the trafficking of Albanian women exponentially into Western Europe. In addition, it was also associated with high levels of discrimination for Albanians in Western countries.

Part Of Imperial Communications: British-Governed Radio In The Middle East, 1934–1949, Andrea L. Stanton Oct 2013

Part Of Imperial Communications: British-Governed Radio In The Middle East, 1934–1949, Andrea L. Stanton

Religious Studies: Faculty Scholarship

From 1934 to 1941, three British-governed radio stations were established in the Middle East: Egyptian State Broadcasting (ESB) in Cairo (1934), the Palestine Broadcasting Service (PBS) in Jerusalem (1936), and the Near East Broadcasting Service (NEBS) in Jaffa (1941). These three stations were modeled on the BBC and run as colonial or imperial stations – but they were also considered national stations. As a result, they operated as hybrid entities with overlapping and sometimes conflicting mandates.

Through three case studies – a contentious hire at the ESB, the PBS’ “Jerusalem Direct News Service”, and the NEBS’ Islamic broadcasts –, this …
