New Negroes On Campus: St. Clair Drake And The Culture Of Education, Reform, And Rebellion At Hampton Institute, Andrew Rosa

History Faculty Publications

On March 15, 1925, Walter Scott Copeland, owner and editor of the Newport News Daily Press, charged that Hampton Institute was teaching and practicing “social equality between the white and negro races . . . The niggers in that institution,” he wrote, “were being taught that there ought not to be any distinction between themselves and white people.” His observation came from his wife, who was distraught after having seen a performance of the Denishawn Dancers while seated next to a black women in Hampton’s Ogden Hall only two weeks before.4 Based in Los Angeles and New York, the …

The 'Sister Kingdom' On Display: Ireland In The Space Of The British Exhibition, 1851-1911, Elizabeth Allen Jan 2013

The 'Sister Kingdom' On Display: Ireland In The Space Of The British Exhibition, 1851-1911, Elizabeth Allen

History Honors Projects

British exhibitions of the nineteenth and early twentieth century were spaces that, through the display of colonial objects, promoted European, and specifically British, supremacy. During this period, Ireland occupied a unique position, and after the Act of Union in 1800 it was both a colonized space and a part of the United Kingdom. Through the analysis of seven exhibitions, this paper aims to examine the representation of the Irish in these public and often contested spaces. Ultimately, due to a number of individual agents who utilized the exhibition in order to fulfill a variety of conflicting goals, the narrative of …

Plimoth Plantation: Producing Historical Knowledge Through Performance, Ashley Rose Jan 2013

Plimoth Plantation: Producing Historical Knowledge Through Performance, Ashley Rose

Undergraduate Review

As one of the earliest living history museums, Plimoth Plantation has recently been criticized by museum and performance theorists for maintaining its reliance on first-person role playing. It has been suggested that these practices help codify the history that Plimoth represents to visitors. The Mayflower II, Hobbomock’s Homesite, and the Seventeenth Century English Village are the three distinct museum sites that Plimoth Plantation uses to help present an important period of European colonization in American history to their visitors. Each of these three sites uses interpretive methods differently to reflect their individual goals. First-person interpretation works to bring history alive …

Invitation Through Song: Evangelism And Divine Discourse In Arkansas Revivals, Chelsea Hodge Jan 2013

Invitation Through Song: Evangelism And Divine Discourse In Arkansas Revivals, Chelsea Hodge

Inquiry: The University of Arkansas Undergraduate Research Journal

For over a century, Protestant evangelists have held revivals to spread their beliefs. The invitation song is the culmination of these meetings; a sermon ends with an invitation to the unsaved to come forward and publicly accept the faith of the revivalists during the “invitation song.” This hymn is not just a traditional means to allow converts to declare their faith; Christians view this time of congregational singing as an intensely personal declaration of their own conviction, a discourse between themselves and the divine. The singers believe their music can be a powerful instrument of change because of a fundamental …

Representations Of Argentine National Identity Via El Museo Nacional De Bellas Artes, Lindsay Newby Jan 2013

Representations Of Argentine National Identity Via El Museo Nacional De Bellas Artes, Lindsay Newby

Inquiry: The University of Arkansas Undergraduate Research Journal

National identity is a concept that every nation constructs and celebrates through the remembrance of important events or persons, the projection of literary works, and the erection of monuments. Yet, in order to truly understand a nation’s self-imagery, one must examine and chart all of its different periods through time. This allows one to avoid narrow, static definitions by viewing a nation in a more holistic sense. In this study, it is hypothesized that museums function to preserve, assert, and disseminate a sense of heritage and, in the case of the Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes, a sense of what …

Kosher Seductions: Jewish Women As Employees And Consumers In German Department Stores, Kerry Wallach Jan 2013

Kosher Seductions: Jewish Women As Employees And Consumers In German Department Stores, Kerry Wallach

German Studies Faculty Publications

Department stores have long been associated with the trope of seducing female consumers, at least since the publication of Emile Zola’s novel Au bonheur des dames in 1883. This fictionalized portrayal of the Parisian department store Bon Marche, which has exerted considerable influence among early chroniclers of department store culture, identifies store owners as men who build ‘temples’ for prospective customers, and who use inebriating tactics to encourage them to enter and spend money. The consumer is gendered female in this and in many other literary works on the department store of the time; she is depicted as reluctant, yet …

The Student As Subaltern: Reconsidering The Role Of Student Life Material Collections At North American Universities, Jessica L. Wagner

Publications and Research

This article argues for college and university archivists to undertake advocacy and activism to better document student life. It discusses key shifts in archival and historical theory that supported an interest in collecting from a wide variety of people rather than just elites. Next, it describes recent archival scholarship on student life materials and considers the extent to which college and university archives are actively documenting the student experience via the collection of these materials. Analysis of the results of a survey of college and university archivists about the nature of these collections sheds further light on prevailing opinions of …

Students strengthened their communication and planning skills and focused on learning more about an earlier generation. Students were moved by the memories of deep sacrifices and loss. They were amazed by the frugal lifestyle required during the World War II Era, and were honored to …

What's Feminism Got To Do With It? Examination Of Feminism In Women's Everyday Lives, Claire Carter Jan 2013

What's Feminism Got To Do With It? Examination Of Feminism In Women's Everyday Lives, Claire Carter

Journal of Feminist Scholarship

In recent decades there has been considerable debate about the role and meaning of feminism in younger women's lives. Feminism can be understood as an empowering discourse, fostering critical awareness and resistance to dominant social norms. However, it can also be experienced as regulatory and disciplinary, clearly defining who and what constitutes a "good" feminist. Utilizing Michel Foucault's principle of care of the self, this paper analyzes women's body practices in relation both to women's interpretation of feminism and to dominant feminist discourses. The complexities of negotiating diverse social identities, as well as women's desire for a happier life and …

(Re)Pinning Our Hopes On Social Media: Pinterest And Women's Discursive Strategies, Katherine Gantz

Journal of Feminist Scholarship

Pinterest, the theme-based image-sharing website, has seen a predominantly female usership since its launch in 2010. Unique in both its design and its demographics in the US, the site has generated distinctive patterns of use, posing new questions about how women are claiming this particular spot in social media as their own. Supported by both feminist linguistic and social science research, this article undertakes a discussion of Pinterest's implicit and explicit gendered protocols of usership, which result in what I argue is an emerging women's online rhetoric. Through the examination of images and accompanying comments taken from the site, I …
