Interpreting the Civil War: Connecting the Civil War to the American Public
I wandered around Philadelphia last week on travel for work, which meant I had the opportunity to indulge in my favorite Philly pleasure. Besides Rocky, Comcast and Benjamin "Macho Man" Franklin, the City of Brotherly Love has given us all one other joyous invention: the cheesesteak.
Brian Friel And The Conflict In Northern Ireland: How The Troubles Have Shaped The Playwright And Informed His Plays, Timothy Hayes
Brian Friel And The Conflict In Northern Ireland: How The Troubles Have Shaped The Playwright And Informed His Plays, Timothy Hayes
The Review: A Journal of Undergraduate Student Research
In lieu of an abstract, below is the article's first paragraph.
A conflict exists between the countries of Ireland and England stretching back over 800 years. Colonial in nature, the conflict has assumed many faces throughout its history. Evidence of its existence today is most noticeable in the situation in Northern Ireland, a situation euphemistically referred to as the "Troubles." The Irish people have been shaped by this conflict and Irish writers have often embraced it thematically within their works. Irish playwright Brian Friel is such a writer. Friel's plays frequently embody this conflict, both explicitly and implicitly.

Session A-3: Across The Wide Missouri: Illinois & Early Exploration Of The Trans-Mississippi West, Claiborne A. Skinner Jr.
Professional Learning Day
Illinois History is often perceived as a contradiction in terms. Until the arrival of Abraham Lincoln, most folks think that nothing of any note happened here. This presentation will address the French traders and explorers from the Illinois Country who pushed west up the Missouri and Arkansas Rivers in the century preceding Lewis and Clark's more famous jaunt. The two knew of these French travelers only too well and recruited a half dozen Illinois French at Fort Massac and Kaskaskia to show them how to get to the "unknown". The effect these men had on the Plains was profound.

Book Review: Joel Van Amberg. A Real Presence: Religious And Social Dynamics Of The Eucharistic Conflicts In Early Modern Augsburg, 1520–1530., Amy Nelson Burnett
Department of History: Faculty Publications
Perhaps more than anywhere else, the imperial city of Augsburg was riven by disagreements over the proper understanding of the Lord’s Supper. In A Real Presence, Joel van Amberg examines the religious dissension in the city and relates it to the political and economic conditions of the 1520s. He argues that rejection of belief in Christ’s physical presence in the consecrated elements went hand-in-hand with rejection of a hierarchical system with mediators who controlled access to both economic and spiritual goods. By placing the theological debate within a specific social context, van Amberg gives new insight into a convoluted controversy. …
