Enabling Acts Of 1876 And 1893, Kathleen Ferris Sep 2011

Enabling Acts Of 1876 And 1893, Kathleen Ferris

Archive of CNMS Site

Several attempts at statehood marked the late nineteenth century. While politicians in both Washington and New Mexico worked to get the territory admitted, success proved elusive.

Racism As An Impediment To Statehood, Kathleen Ferris Sep 2011

Racism As An Impediment To Statehood, Kathleen Ferris

Archive of CNMS Site

New Mexico spent an unusually long period as a territory, 62 years in total. For comparison, consider the length of territorial status for other states in the West: Colorado-15 years, Nevada-14 years, Utah-46 years, Montana-25 years, Wyoming-22 years, Idaho-44 years. A small population and an underdeveloped economy were two common reasons given at the time to explain the delay in admitting New Mexico. Although New Mexico did lag at times behind other territories in the growth of its population and economy, by the late nineteenth century it had more people and a larger economy than many older states had when …

From Hydra To Al-Qaeda: Depictions Of Terrorism In Comic Books, Cord Scott Sep 2011

From Hydra To Al-Qaeda: Depictions Of Terrorism In Comic Books, Cord Scott

Re-visioning Terrorism

Comic books have often reflected the world at the time of publication. Terrorism became a prominent aspect of several comic storylines after 9/11, but the concept of terrorist groups in comic books is far more common than one might think. This paper looks at how terrorist groups have been used in US comic books, how events in comics have later come true, and how depictions of terrorists have changed in both positive and negative aspects.

Jihadis And The Use Of The Terms Terrorism And Terrorist, Aaron Zelin Sep 2011

Jihadis And The Use Of The Terms Terrorism And Terrorist, Aaron Zelin

Re-visioning Terrorism

Previous studies on the usage of the terms terror, terrorist, and terrorism have taken a Western perspective on how these terms should be defined and then deployed, but the viewpoint of the “terrorist” (in this case jihadis) has yet to be examined. This study analyzes how jihadis understand these terms and critically assesses their interpretation based on classical Islamic doctrine. The basis and “proof” for jihadis’ legitimization of using terror is based upon the Qur’anic verse 8:60, but when taken into context and traditional understanding, jihadis miss the mark. Yet, at the same time, when exploring the linguistic root for …

Vigilance, Vigilantism, And The Role Of The Citizen In Combating German Terror, 1967-1977, Todd Michael Goehle Sep 2011

Vigilance, Vigilantism, And The Role Of The Citizen In Combating German Terror, 1967-1977, Todd Michael Goehle

Re-visioning Terrorism

By closely analyzing the Charles Bronson vehicle Death Wish -released to German speaking audiences as Ein Mann sieht rot- and the controversies that surrounded its West German debut in November 1974, the essay addresses broader debates about vigilance, Selbstjustiz (vigilante justice), and citizenship during the “Red Years” (1967-1977). Conceptualizing Selbstjustiz as a discursive site, I reveal how Ein Mann sieht rot’s representations of Selbstjustiz negotiated broader German anxieties about Americanization, masculinity, urban crime, the fascist past, state power, media effects and sensationalism, constructions of the citizen and the criminalized or terrorist “other,” and the responsibilities of the citizen in …

Holy Writ: Thinking Beyond Enabling Legislation To Modern Relevance, John M. Rudy Sep 2011

Holy Writ: Thinking Beyond Enabling Legislation To Modern Relevance, John M. Rudy

Interpreting the Civil War: Connecting the Civil War to the American Public

Why trust a bunch of dead guys? I know it sounds trite, but it's very important when we begin approaching how we talk about Civil War sites (or any historic site). Oftentimes, the folks who voted the site into existence and decided its primary reason for being are dead and gone. The world has changed radically since they were here. The pieces of legislation they created (at the federal level they're typically called "enabling legislation," at lower levels they have varied other names) were distinct products of their times. The themes and significances they outline are likewise products of their …

Obstetrical Forceps: History, Mystery, And Morality, Ronald L. Young Sep 2011

Obstetrical Forceps: History, Mystery, And Morality, Ronald L. Young

Houston History of Medicine Lectures (2006-2012)

The history of obstetrical forceps has almost always been one cloaked in controversy after a long history of being shrouded in mystery. Forceps have a long history and have evolved from facilitating the delivery of dead fetuses to aiding in the delivery and survival of live babies. In the middle of all of this arises the story of the Chamberlain family whose contribution was enormous but whose behaviors pushed at the envelope of (at least) our present-day concepts of medical ethics. This lecture traces an interesting story that spans a millennium.

Identity, Nationalism And Cultural Heritage Under Siege: The Case Of Pomaks (Bulgarian-Speaking Muslims) In Bulgaria, Fatme M. Myuhtar-May Sep 2011

Identity, Nationalism And Cultural Heritage Under Siege: The Case Of Pomaks (Bulgarian-Speaking Muslims) In Bulgaria, Fatme M. Myuhtar-May

Student Theses and Dissertations

This research explores selected cultural traditions and histories associated with the Pomaks, a community inhabiting the Rhodope Mountains of southwestern Bulgaria. They speak Bulgarian as a mother tongue, but profess Islam as their religion unlike the country's Orthodox Christian majority. Based on this linguistic unity, the Pomaks have been subjected to recurring forced assimilation since Bulgaria's independence from Ottoman rule in 1878. Today, taking advantage of Bulgaria's democratic rule, they are beginning to assert a heritage of their own making. Still, remnants of entrenched totalitarian mentality in the official cultural domain prevent any formal undertaking to that effect. With the …

Connelly Roundtable, Thomas Borstlemann

Department of History: Faculty Publications

Let me show my cards. I am partially responsible for this interchange, since I had the pleasure of chairing the program committee for the 2010 OAH annual meeting and organizing the plenary session on “The United States and the World” at which Matt Connelly first delivered this paper. I invited him because I knew he would be insightful and I hoped he would be provocative. The audience and I were not disappointed on either count. I have been an enthusiastic (though not uncritical1) fan of Matt’s work for a long time.

I am a bit older than Matt and have …
