Segregationist Organizations And The Promotion Of Violence During The Hoxie And Little Rock Crises Of 1955 And 1957, Dan A. Benton Sep 2010

Segregationist Organizations And The Promotion Of Violence During The Hoxie And Little Rock Crises Of 1955 And 1957, Dan A. Benton

Theses and Dissertations

During the mid to late 1950s, Hoxie and Little Rock were Arkansas communities that experienced social unrest and violence when their public schools began to desegregate. White Citizens' Council of Arkansas and White America Incorporated were segregationist groups they attempted to prevent integration at Hoxie but failed because their leaders publicly asked local citizens to resort to violence to stop desegregation of local classrooms. The Capital Citizens' Council and the Mothers' League were anti-integrationist organizations in Little Rock that adapted from the mistakes committed at Hoxie. For a time they promoted violence at Little Rock while avoiding repercussions from local, …

Little Rock Woman's Christian Temperance Union, 1888 To 1903, Jane Ann Wilkerson Sep 2010

Little Rock Woman's Christian Temperance Union, 1888 To 1903, Jane Ann Wilkerson

Theses and Dissertations

In discussions about the women's rights, organizations such as the National Organization for Women or the National American Woman Suffrage Association often overshadow the contributions of the Woman's Christian Temperance Union (WCTU). Most know of the WCTU's efforts against alcohol but little is known about the group's work toward woman's suffrage. In fact, the Little Rock organization became one of the WCTU's strongest local unions. It worked to change the lives of women and children not only in the city, but also statewide. Members' skills and unique backgrounds helped the union reach many of its goals. During these efforts it …

A History Of Argenta: The Making Of A Historic District, Sara Drew

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study is to examine the development of historic districts in the United States and to then use the case study of Argenta to draw specific conclusions about the implementation and effectiveness of the historic district approach. The traditional history of most historic districts has been well-documented, but there are few studies of historic districts as unique objects. Making extensive use of primary sources, especially newspaper articles, this study traces the downtown North Little Rock area from the devastating impact of urban renewal in the 1960s and 1970s, crime in the 1980s and revival starting in the …

Forgotten But Not Forgiven: The Legacy Of Governor Ben T. Laney, M. Melissa Laney Sep 2010

Forgotten But Not Forgiven: The Legacy Of Governor Ben T. Laney, M. Melissa Laney

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis examines the life and career of Benjamin T. Laney, Jr., the thirty-third governor of Arkansas, who, in full embrace of his conservative affiliation, left a progressive legislative legacy to the State of Arkansas. Little has been written about Laney, and this study attempts a comprehensive exploration of his political career, the legislative accomplishments of his administration, his involvement with the Dixiecrat movement in 1948, and career as a former governor. Using Laney's papers, including letters, speeches, and news clippings, this study also seeks to answer why Laney never fully committed to the Dixiecrat movement, a moniker that impacted …

Annual Reports To Shareholders: Historical Collections In Libraries, Judith M. Nixon Sep 2010

Annual Reports To Shareholders: Historical Collections In Libraries, Judith M. Nixon

Libraries Research Publications

The purpose of this article is to describe the scope and depth of the historic corporate annual report collections in twelve academic/research libraries in North America. For many decades, a few major academic business libraries have been collecting and preserving corporate Annual Reports (ARS), the reports sent to shareholders documenting the financial status and future plans of the company. Today these historic collections provide more than a record of the companies’ finances; they provide a glimpse into the social and cultural thoughts from the past and the corporate stories of individual companies. Digitization of these reports has only just begun; …

Superpower Relations, Backchannels, And The Subcontinent, Luke A. Nichter, Richard A. Moss Sep 2010

Superpower Relations, Backchannels, And The Subcontinent, Luke A. Nichter, Richard A. Moss

Presidential Studies Faculty Articles and Research

In his 1978 memoirs, President Nixon claimed, “By using diplomatic signals and behind-the-scenes pressures we had been able to save West Pakistan from the imminent threat of Indian aggression and domination. We had also once again avoided a major confrontation with the Soviet Union.”[1] Kissinger’s far more detailed chapter on “the tilt,” in the first volume of his memoirs, White House Years, complements and largely corroborates Nixon’s. Kissinger argued that Nixon did not want to “squeeze Yahya” and tried to put forward a neutral posture to the bloodshed in East Pakistan so as not to encourage secessionist elements within an …
