What They Brought: The Alta California Franciscans Before 1769, Rose Marie Beebe, Robert M. Senkewicz
What They Brought: The Alta California Franciscans Before 1769, Rose Marie Beebe, Robert M. Senkewicz
History
For a long period beginning in the nineteenth century, historians of California generally characterized missionaries during the Spanish and Mexican eras in one of two ways: as heroic agents of civilization or nefarious purveyors of destruction. The heroic interpretation became dominant in works influenced by the Spanish Revival movement, and it was also evident in the writings of the great Franciscan historians Zephryn Engelhardt, Maynard J. Geiger, and Francis F. Guest, all of whom based their work on the trove of documents at the Santa Barbara Mission Archive-Library. In the 1980s and 1990s, the nefarious interpretation became especially pronounced, due …
Off To Carolina- No News From There, Konrad Basler
Off To Carolina- No News From There, Konrad Basler
Swiss American Historical Society Review
"In January 1743 the whole family emigrated to Carolina.
Thereafter no more news came to Dorlikon." With this footnote the
entries to Rudolf Eprecht's line in the Epprecht family chronicle
end. It touched me when, three decades ago, I received Reverend
Robert Epprecht's research work on the Epprecht family as a gift.
According to Reverend Epprecht's findings, other villagers from
Dorlikon had also left for Carolina, among whom a certain Conrad
Basler with his family. Did they ever reach the other side of the
Ocean? If so, where did they settle? And do these families still exist
today?
Off To Pennsylvania, Konrad Basler
Off To Pennsylvania, Konrad Basler
Swiss American Historical Society Review
After New York, my wife and I traveled on to Bethlehem,
Pennsylvania. We had long been invited to visit John and Nelda Fisher
there, old university friends of ours, and it was now that we finally complied.
'It looks greener and cleaner', was our first response to the town that
had become our second home and our daughter Susan's birthplace. The
fortunate change in the town's appearance seemed due to the 'Bethlehem
Steel Company', which had shrunk to a mere tenth of its original jobs.
Lehigh University, on the other hand, had grown in size-in particular its
research department for …

At the time of the Dorlikon pioneers only Indian paths led west,
and yet, the traffic connections to the Midwest hold a core position in
the history of North America. My wife and I went to one of the most
important centers in this context, Milwaukee, Wisconsin, coming
from Newark, New Jersey. As a member of a delegation of experts
I had been to Newark twenty years before, when, for the first time
worldwide , a novel way of building runways was being tested there.
On our visit in 1992, on the other hand, I was more interested in the …

Loring-Greenough House, North Yard Archaeogeophysics, Jamaica Plain, Massachusetts, John M. Steinberg, Christa M. Beranek, John Schoenfelder, Kathryn A. Catlin
Andrew Fiske Memorial Center for Archaeological Research Publications
An archaeogeophysical survey was carried out in May 2010 using Geonics EM-38 RT and a Malå Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) system with a 500 MHz antenna over an 28x26 m grid immediately northeast of the Loring-Greenough house in Jamaica Plain, MA. Three major anomalies were identified. These anomalies have not been ground truthed, but they appear to be archaeological features. First, we suggest that there is builders trench just north of the house. Second, we suggest that there could be three east-west garden paths or other landscape features about 30 cm below the surface crossing the entire length of the …

Moon Rocks And Mediations: Cooperation And Competition In Space Race Diplomacy, Christopher S. Dinkel
Moon Rocks And Mediations: Cooperation And Competition In Space Race Diplomacy, Christopher S. Dinkel
Master's Theses or Doctor of Nursing Practice
While the Space Race is often discussed in terms of international competition and Cold War tension, the fact that both Soviet and American forays into space remained peaceful and scientifically driven throughout the 1950s and 1960s points to a more complicated reality that indicates a significant amount of international cooperation during the Space Race. The International Geophysical Year (IGY), which was a collaborative effort among scientists from around the world, served as a catalyst for beginning the Space Race in the late 1950s, and the importance of scientific cooperation emphasized by the IGY remained central to space exploration throughout the …

The United States And The Overthrow Of Kwame Nkrumah, Eric Quaidoo
Master's Theses or Doctor of Nursing Practice
February 24, 1966 is regarded by many Ghanaians as the Waterloo in the history of Ghana, and Ghanaians would not like it to be mentioned so as to rekindle old wounds considering the hardships the country went through from that period until accepting democratic rule in the early 1990s. On that fateful day the first Republic of Ghana was overthrown in a military coup d’état when the first President, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, was on a peacemaking mission in Vietnam. Most Ghanaians and Africans continue to point accusing fingers at the United States for this unfortunate incident that brought not only …
Weighted Scales: American Newspaper Coverage Of The Trial Of The Major War Criminals At Nuremberg, Brian Gribben
Weighted Scales: American Newspaper Coverage Of The Trial Of The Major War Criminals At Nuremberg, Brian Gribben
Master's Theses or Doctor of Nursing Practice
The Trial of the Major War Criminals at Nuremberg, the personalities associated with the trial, the verdicts rendered, and criticisms directed toward both those verdicts and the tribunal itself have generated a multitude of historical works. However, few historians have explored the American print media's coverage of the trial and even fewer have studied how a newspaper's disposition towards the trial reflected that publication's political ideology and influenced the newspaper's coverage of the trial itself. For this reason, it is the objective of this thesis to examine this neglected area, thus contributing to the scholarship of the first Nuremberg Trial. …

The Lost Art Of Interdependency: United Nations Leadership In The Suez Crisis Of 1956 And Its Ramifications In World Affairs, Matthew Walker
The Lost Art Of Interdependency: United Nations Leadership In The Suez Crisis Of 1956 And Its Ramifications In World Affairs, Matthew Walker
Department of History: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
The following study examines the relationship between competing national interests and the implementation of multilateral diplomacy as characterized by the United Nations. Although primary attention focuses on the events Suez Crisis of 1956, the scope of work analyzes this dichotomy from the Suez Canal’s construction to the post-Suez era of the 1960s. Adopting a more comprehensive approach to understanding the crisis and its impact on international diplomacy provides adds a new and timely perspective to scope of the crisis and the complexities of conflict resolution.
In many respects, the diplomatic maneuvering of the nineteenth century remained a constant in diplomatic …
The Strange Case Of The Courts, A Car, And The 1910 Batting Title, Steven Gietschier
The Strange Case Of The Courts, A Car, And The 1910 Batting Title, Steven Gietschier
The Confluence (2009-2020)
Ty Cobb and Napoleon Lajoie were fighting for the 1910 American League batting title right down to the end of the season. Who won was under dispute, and it landed the St. Louis Browns in court. Gietschier looks at the case files involving the Browns manager who was fired over accusations that he tried to let Lajoie win the title—and a new car.

Glorious Constructions: The Struggle To Preserve Salvation-Themed Visionary Art Environments, Molly Elaine Sheehan
Master's Theses
Salvation-themed art environments are a roadside rarity, built out of a strong visionary dedication to God, but the sites are disappearing simply because the work is misunderstood. The historiography on the subject is sparse, trending more toward coffee table books with big glossy pictures than real scholarly endeavors, but the consensus among all has been clear. The sites are a valuable part of the recent American cultural landscape, crossing several scholarly fields - art, architecture, and history - and uniting them into a cohesive preservation movement. On a series of trips to visit, see, and experience five of these sites, …
