Georgia: Frozen Conflict And The Role Of Displaced Persons, Kate Elizabeth Zimmerly Jan 2009

Georgia: Frozen Conflict And The Role Of Displaced Persons, Kate Elizabeth Zimmerly

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Though commonly overlooked, communities of displaced persons often play a complex and significant role in the emergence and perpetuation of ethnic conflict. This paper looks at the intersection of these themes in the conflict between the former Soviet Republic of Georgia and the separatist region of Abkhazia. In particular it looks at the nature of protracted or "frozen" conflict with particular attention to the role of the displaced community in the conflict's entrenchment. Specifically, it seeks to answer the question: why do certain conflicts go unresolved for so long, and what role do refugees play in this resolution resistance?

A Clash Of Worldviews: The Impact Of Modern Western Notion Of Progress On Indigenous Naga Culture, Tezenlo Thong Jan 2009

A Clash Of Worldviews: The Impact Of Modern Western Notion Of Progress On Indigenous Naga Culture, Tezenlo Thong

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The term "progress" is a modern Western notion that life is always improving and advancing toward an ideal state. It is a vital modern concept which underlies geographic explorations and scientific and technological inventions as well as the desire to harness nature in order to increase human beings' ease and comfort. With the advent of Western colonization and to the great detriment of the colonized, the notion of progress began to perniciously and pervasively permeate across cultures.

During the classical colonial period, Western anthropologists, sociologists and others had hypothesized, or at least ardently bought into the notion, that human beings, …

The Early Nuclear Age And Visions Of Future War, David M. Walker Jan 2009

The Early Nuclear Age And Visions Of Future War, David M. Walker

History Faculty Publications and Presentations

The images of a nuclear war bringing the end of the world or something close to it have been firmly planted in the human imagination since 1945. Fiction and speculative nonfiction writers quickly followed John Hersey’s factual and journalistic Hiroshima with fantastic imaginings of nuclear Armageddon, especially once the Cold War began. In the early nuclear age, visions of future wars often fell into the nuclear holocaust, end-of-the-world genre. Writers imagined future nuclear war as a no-win exchange of strategic city-busting nuclear weapons. This tradition continued until the end of the Cold War. There are well-known works, such as 1963’s …

Red Detachment Of Women And The Enterprise Of Making ‘Model’ Music During The Chinese Cultural Revolution, Clare Sher Ling Eng Jan 2009

Red Detachment Of Women And The Enterprise Of Making ‘Model’ Music During The Chinese Cultural Revolution, Clare Sher Ling Eng

Faculty Scholarship

Artworks produced with official sanction during periods marked by turmoil and human suffering are challenging subjects for scholars who would like to discuss them in a fair and responsible manner. If they aestheticize the works’ form and political affiliation, how would they be doing justice to these works whose creation and content are so meshed with the politics of their time? On the other hand, can an approach that takes ideology into account be developed that does not appear to ignore, condone or support the odious acts of violence associated with those periods? This article explores the latter question with …

From Working Arm To Wetback: The Mexican Worker And American National Identity, 1942-1964, Mark Brinkman Jan 2009

From Working Arm To Wetback: The Mexican Worker And American National Identity, 1942-1964, Mark Brinkman

Dissertations, Masters Theses, Capstones, and Culminating Projects

This thesis explores America’s treatment of the Mexican worker in the United States between 1942 and 1964, the years in which an international guest worker agreement between the United States and Mexico informally known as the Bracero Program was in place, and one in which heightened fears of illegal immigration resulted in Operation Wetback, one of the largest deportation programs in U.S. history. The Mexican worker’s experience during the bracero era brings to light core traits of American national identity, such as xenophobia and ethnocentrism, that today obstruct the United States’ ability to resolve its currently conflicted relationship with the …

Coughlin And Cleveland, Karen G. Ketchaver Jan 2009

Coughlin And Cleveland, Karen G. Ketchaver

Masters Theses

Father Charles E. Coughlin was one of the most prominent, and most controversial, figures in the United States in the 1930s and in the early years of the 1940s. This Canadian-born cleric rose from the life of an ordinary parish priest to becoming one of the leading radio phenomena of his day, masterfully using the new medium to command a vast audience. Coughlin began his radio career addressing religious subjects, but he expanded into the realm of politics by the early 1930s. His views became more and more extreme, and, by the latter part of the decade, he became increasingly …

Digging Paradise: Historical And Archeological Miscellany Of The U.S. Virgin Islands, Kenneth Baumgardt

The Bridge

During the 1980's and 1990's, the firm of MAAR Associates of Newark, Delaware, conducted more than thirty archeological investigations of the prehistoric sites and Danish Plantations of the U. S. Virgin Islands. These studies were conducted to fulfill the requirements of the National Historic Preservation Act prior to proposed hotel construction there. However, after the islands were devastated by Hurricane Hugo in 1987, many of these projects were never built. Nonetheless, a great volume of information about the history and prehistory of the Virgin Islands was collected. This study will provide a compilation of some of the discoveries made during …

New Rhetoric, Old Practices: Combining Old And New Diplomacy In 1919, Natasha M. Leyk Jan 2009

New Rhetoric, Old Practices: Combining Old And New Diplomacy In 1919, Natasha M. Leyk

History Honors Projects

The idea of a "new world order" based on peace, justice and democracy is not unique to the post-Cold War era. President Woodrow Wilson utilized the same rhetoric when discussing the end of World War I and the Paris Peace Conference of 1919. Wilson's "new world order" provided a foundation to his conception of New Diplomacy. Yet 1919 was not the start of a "new world order" based on New Diplomacy. The Treaty of Versailles, negotiated at the Paris Peace Conference, became considered a harsh treaty that was not based on New Diplomacy. How did New Diplomacy fail in 1919, …

The Council Of Nicaea: Constantine's Sword Or Shield?, Pamela T. Gaskill Jan 2009

The Council Of Nicaea: Constantine's Sword Or Shield?, Pamela T. Gaskill

Master of Liberal Studies Theses

This paper examines events from the late third century to the Council of Nicaea in 325 C.E. The scope of this study is not to debate the differences in translation of ancient texts but rather to examine how the Council of Nicaea changed the path of orthodox Christianity and was used to fuel Constantine's ambition. Constantine called the Council of Nicaea to maintain the integrity of his empire. He recognized the potential hidden in Christian communities. His success in calling the Council of Nicaea should not be measured by the doctrine that emerged, but rather by the decline of theological …
