Justice, Law, And The Creation Of The American Republic: The Forgotten Legacy Of James Wilson, Mark Hall Jun 2009

Justice, Law, And The Creation Of The American Republic: The Forgotten Legacy Of James Wilson, Mark Hall

Faculty Publications - Department of History and Politics

James Wilson was one of six men to sign both the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution of the United States. In the Federal Convention of 1787, he spoke more often than all but one other delegate (Gouverneur Morris), and by all accounts he played a critical role in framing the Constitution. His early defense of the proposed Constitution and his leadership in the Pennsylvania ratifying convention did much to secure the document's acceptance. Wilson served as one of the new nation's first Supreme Court Justices, and his Lectures on Law contain some of the period's most profound commentary on …

State Constitutional Limits On New Hampshire‘S Taxing Power: Historical Development And Modern State, Marcus Hurn Jun 2009

State Constitutional Limits On New Hampshire‘S Taxing Power: Historical Development And Modern State, Marcus Hurn

Law Faculty Scholarship

The New Hampshire Constitution is, in most of its fundamental parts, very old. It is long (nearly 200 articles) and wordy, even by the standards of the eighteenth century. It expresses essential principles in more than one place, in more than one way, and in language that to modem eyes is more suited to political philosophy than to positive law. Most of it was copied from the original Massachusetts Constitution, itself based on a draft by John Adams. However, there is no other state in the union with a structure of taxing powers and limits comparable to New Hampshire's.

Genres Populaires Et « Érographiques » En Afrique Francophone : Le Cas Des Romans De La Collection Adoras, Sathya Rao Jun 2009

Genres Populaires Et « Érographiques » En Afrique Francophone : Le Cas Des Romans De La Collection Adoras, Sathya Rao

Présence Francophone: Revue internationale de langue et de littérature

This article will take the Adoras novels as a case study to address the aesthetics and institutional issues related to the emergence of popular literature in francophone Africa. As the promoter of an “erographic” discourse that strives to accommodate modernity and tradition, francophone romance, which has been largely under-examined if not denigrated, raises a wide range of questions on the status of francophone literature, the socioeconomic constraints on publication in Africa, and the construction of a truly African erotic imaginary.

Quand On Vient Aussi De L’Autre Monde: Appartenance(S), Conflit(S) Et Déchirement(S) Dans L’Enfant Des Deux Mondes De Karima Berger, Carla Calargé Jun 2009

Quand On Vient Aussi De L’Autre Monde: Appartenance(S), Conflit(S) Et Déchirement(S) Dans L’Enfant Des Deux Mondes De Karima Berger, Carla Calargé

Présence Francophone: Revue internationale de langue et de littérature

My essay analyzes Karima Berger’s first novel, L’enfant des deux mondes (1989). The author who has been living in France for more than 25 years tells the story of a Muslim Arab girl (herself ?) educated in the French school system of pre-independent Algeria. In this study, I examine linguistic, cultural and religious issues raised by the novel in an effort to identify the factors that keep the protagonist imprisoned in a permanent state of being in-between-two-worlds without fully belonging to any of them.

A reflective, first-person account, Benjamin Sehene’s Le feu sous la soutane is the story of memories of a double crime of rape and genocide by a Catholic priest, Father Stanislas. But, the Holy man will rape them. He also participates alongside with the Hutu militia to the extermination of the Tutsi who came to take refuge in the parish.

The comedy of manners presented in the form of play or in the form of sketches or playlet by the medium of videos and DVDs is a phenomenon that develops in Guadeloupe, Martinique and Guyana, but also in France. These productions are the link between communities in the Creole area (Guadeloupe, Martinique and Guyana) and the outside (metropolitan France and diaspora). They will be analyzed for their popular and scholarly features between erudite comedy and farce, between traditional and postcréolitaire cultural affirmation, between Creole and French, between Italian theatre and yardplay, between creole comedy and vaudeville, between negropolitan diaspora and …

Rediscovering Reo: Reflections On The Life And Anthropological Career Of Reo Franklin Fortune, Caroline Thomas

Pacific Studies

Reo Fortune’s legacy to anthropology has been overshadowed by his relation- ships with friends and colleagues, many of whom came to see him as difficult. Professional differences and personality clashes pervaded his career. Despite this, he was once regarded as the foremost anthropologist of his era. Fortune’s contribution to anthropology is reflected in his major publications and journal articles that illustrate the diversity and complexity of his fieldwork.

Australian Aboriginal Ethnometeorology And Seasonal Calendars, Philip A. Clarke Jun 2009

Australian Aboriginal Ethnometeorology And Seasonal Calendars, Philip A. Clarke

Aboriginal Policy Research Consortium International (APRCi)

This paper uses a cultural anthropological approach to investigate an indigenous Australian perspective on atmospheric phenomena and seasons, using data gained from historical records and ethnographic fieldwork. Aboriginal people believe that the forces driving the weather are derived from Creation Ancestors and spirits, asserting that short term changes are produced through ritual. By recognizing signals such as wind direction, rainfall, temperature change, celestial movements, animal behaviour and the flowering of plants, Aboriginal people are able to divide the year into seasons. Indigenous calendars vary widely across Australia and reflect annual changes within Aboriginal lifestyles.

Heinrich Handschin: A Man Wants To Climb Up

Swiss American Historical Society Review

Barely back in Basel Handschin met Bernhard Lerch (1811-1904), a ribbon manufacturer and Swiss entrepreneur from Moscow, who was looking for a weaving master for his firm. This meeting was to become a fateful tum in Handschin' s development. Bernhard Lerch offered the young and well-qualified Handschin a position, he accepted and in 1856 traveled to Moscow where he was to spend the next 25 years.

Heinrich Handschin: Finally Independent Jun 2009

Heinrich Handschin: Finally Independent

Swiss American Historical Society Review

In the first years Heinrich Handschin lived extremely modestly, spent as little as possible and seemed to work untiringly. Because he lived so frugally, he was able to save several hundred rubles, approximately sfr. 2,300.00, which he then invested in his own enterprise. When Lerch Inc. moved into a new factory on the outskirts of Moscow in 1859, he sold a part of his old building to his manager Handschin. Thus, after Morf and Lerch the property changed into the hands of the third Swiss entrepreneur and was still used for the production of textiles.

Heinrich Handschin: His Last Will

Swiss American Historical Society Review

On June 16, 1894, the President of the Cantonal Executive of Canton Basel-Landschaft received a telegram sent by the clerk of the Basel Civil Court: "You are requested to send a delegate this afternoon in order to receive important information from the Last Will of Heinrich Handschin from Rickenbach, deceased today." 19 In his last Will of October 5, 1993, Heinrich Handschin designated the Canton of Basel-Landschaft as his primary heir. He also made bequests to many charitable institutions and to relatives from near and far. This will had been drawn up by Dr. Wilhelm Vischer, a notary public in …

Heinrich Handschin: Heinrich Wiesner Jun 2009

Heinrich Handschin: Heinrich Wiesner

Swiss American Historical Society Review

I was born on July 1, 1925, in Zeglingen; my father was a small farmer and quarry worker. At the end of Bezirksschule[ corresponds to junior high school with a more demanding curriculum than 5th to 8th grade, at that time it was only found in larger towns] I did not see any possibilities for learning a profession. My teacher decided to send me to teachers' college [Lehrerseminar]. This meant great financial burdens and I needed four different scholarships. The result: I learned for money, not for life. Each trimester I had to appear at the Education …

The Handschin Foundation: Liquidation Jun 2009

The Handschin Foundation: Liquidation

Swiss American Historical Society Review

The Basel assets of Heinrich Handschin were speedily liquidated. Jakob Wirz renounced the right to buy the house at the Schtitzenmattstrasse, and the Handschin household was liquidated at an auction and the property was sold for the Foundation. Only the disbursing of the legacies of sfr. 25,000.00 to relatives who had not been mentioned in the will took until 1895 because these people also had to prove that they were indeed relatives.

Introduction: A Weaver In Moscow-A Benefactor In Basel-Land Heinrich Handschin 1830-1894, Marianne Burkhard

Swiss American Historical Society Review

While I was President of the SAHS a few years ago I was contacted by a descendant of the Handschin family who wanted to have an English translation of a brochure which described the life and work of her greatgreat- uncle Heinrich Handschin. He grew up in rather poor circumstances in Rickenbach, in the Canton of Basel-Landschaft, became a weaver, emigrated to Russia and returned as a rich man to Basel. At his death he bequeathed most of his money to his Canton requesting that an educational foundation be set up which would allow poor children of the Canton to …

Heinrich Handschin: Relief Jun 2009

Heinrich Handschin: Relief

Swiss American Historical Society Review

The hiring of the young Jakob Wirz proved to be a great success. Under his management the Handschin firm emerged as an extremely profitable large enterprise. The financial statement for the year of 1882 was the best the firm had ever seen, thus Heinrich Handschin gave Wirz a bonus of sfr. 5,000.00 and promoted him to general manager.
