Wade Hampton Iii: A Symposium, Nicholas G. Meriwether
Caroliniana Library Publications
More than a century after his death, the figure of Wade Hampton III still looms large in the minds of historians and in the history of his state. The scope of his life, the turbulence of his times, and the multifarious nature of his career make him an appealing, even arresting, figure whose complex legacy is still being explored by scholars, an effort furthered by the symposium that first created the essays in this volume.

The Bridge
Peeling the Onion is the intriguing name of the memoirs written by the celebrated German author, Gunter Grass, who won the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1999. His memoirs cover the twenty-year period from the outbreak of World War II in September 1939 until the publication of his best selling book, The Tin Drum, in 1959. In other words, the book begins in Danzig, where he was born and lived with his parents and sister, and it also ends in Danzig, where the novel, The Tin Drum, takes place.
Moments Of Strength: Iranian Women's Rights And The 1979 Revolution, Caroline M. Brooks
Moments Of Strength: Iranian Women's Rights And The 1979 Revolution, Caroline M. Brooks
Honors Theses
An Iranian women’s movement failed to materialize in the twentieth century. While women in Iran played important and essential roles in political and social movements, they never united with a single voice calling for women’s rights. Thus the activities of activist women were scattered through the decades of Iranian history, while their roles shifted and their goals evolved but they were involved. Women’s rights occupied moments. One of the most important moments for women in Iranian history came with their participation in the 1979 Revolution against the Shah. Mohammad Reza Shah was a complex ruler, embracing modernity and Westernization while …
Lola's Story: Writing Comfort Women In World War Ii History Of The Philippines, Krishna Ignalaga Thomas
Lola's Story: Writing Comfort Women In World War Ii History Of The Philippines, Krishna Ignalaga Thomas
Masters Theses
This thesis examines the origins of the Japanese-imposed comfort station system in the Philippines during World War II. In order to show that the Filipino former comfort women lolas) are not marginalized victims, but are active agents instead, I illustrate how successfully the lolas have used various strategies to keep this issue at the forefront. This thesis analyzes their testimonies and other genres, (legal proceedings, newspaper articles, poetry, dance and language usage) highlighting the growing need for outlaw genres to bridge the gap in a contemporary landscape where history needs to cross national, cultural and language barriers. By presenting these …

Soil Sisters: Independent Land Owning Women In Coles And Douglas Counties, Illinois, 1870-1930, Rachel E. Kleinschmidt
Masters Theses
In the Midwest during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, many women owned and worked on farmland, but the male-dominated capitalistic farming system negated much of the legal and economic authority they had as farmers. Progressive Era changes in the farming system shifted family farming systems to profit-driven business-oriented farms, marginalizing women's productive contributions. Single and widowed women farmers in Coles and Douglas Counties in Illinois managed to retain ownership of farm land despite gender and legal biases inherent in common law practices defined by patriarchy.

Storm Warnings In The Straits: Russian-Ottoman Trade Issues, Theophilus C. Prousis
Storm Warnings In The Straits: Russian-Ottoman Trade Issues, Theophilus C. Prousis
History Faculty Research and Scholarship
Russian envoys in the Ottoman capital routinely raised storm warnings over commerce and other contentious points in Russian-Ottoman relations. Trade formed part of the "precarious balance" between conflict and negotiation, as the two adjacent empires competed for lands, peoples and resources along porous frontiers and engaged in risky but profitable commercial exchange. Archival documents from the Russian embassy in Constantinople provide telling detail and firsthand commentary on trade issues, contested borders and related concerns in Russian-Ottoman affairs of the early 19th century. These- sources not only indicate the variety of interests that shaped Russian policy in the eastern Mediterranean but …
Commending Religion To All Around Us: Baptist Church Discipline, 1780-1850, Claire White
Commending Religion To All Around Us: Baptist Church Discipline, 1780-1850, Claire White
Psi Sigma Siren
In 1818, a letter signed “B.” was sent to The American Baptist Magazine and Missionary Intelligencer. The letter, titled “Things to be set in order in the churches,” stated that the Baptists’ “moral and social habits, including [their] general intercourse with the world, must be such, as to commend religion to all around us.” While all religions fashion themselves pure and saintly, B., and his Baptist contemporaries, truly believed that their discipline and social habits, not just their internal piety, made them the world’s saviors. In the early decades of the nineteenth century, American Baptist congregations were flourishing. In 1740, …

The Irish In The Civil War, W Dennis Keating
Law Faculty Articles and Essays
In this article, I will discuss the role of the Irish in the Civil War focusing on some famous units, primarily on the Northern side but also some in the South. I will profile the three leading Irish-American military leaders of the war – Thomas Francis Meagher of the Irish Brigade, “Little” Phil Sheridan of the Union, and Patrick Cleburne of the Confederacy. While “Stonewall” Jackson was of Ulster Scots-Irish stock, I am not including him. Seven Union and six Confederate generals were Irish-born. And I will discuss the conflict between the Irish immigrants and the Negroes, which erupted in …

Teaching Washington State History Through The Arts: A Curricular Guide, Rebekah Norgard
Teaching Washington State History Through The Arts: A Curricular Guide, Rebekah Norgard
All Graduate Projects
Students benefit both academically and nonacademically when a core subject is taught through the arts. The arts allow students to develop cognitively, extend their research skills, define their ability to problem solve, and strengthen their self-image. Personal connections and student attentiveness is increased when classes incorporate the study of the arts. The purpose of this project was to encourage the integration of arts into core subjects and provide a framework and examples of effective arts content infusion as an instructional strategy for use by Washington State History teachers.
