A Guide To Ceramics From Spanish Colonial Sites In Texas, Anne A. Fox, Kristi M. Ulrich

Index of Texas Archaeology: Open Access Gray Literature from the Lone Star State

The descriptions of ceramic types in this publication are compiled primarily as an aid to archaeologists working at missions and presidios in Texas, though it will also help those investigating town and ranch sites occupied during the eighteenth century. It was written with the help of numerous site reports done by archaeologists throughout the twentieth century who have valiantly wrestled with the problems of type identification and dating. The senior author has had the privilege of working with many of them throughout this period, and has developed an intense interest in ceramic identification. Additional help has come from researchers who …

Commemoration Versus Coping With The Past: Contextualising Austria's Commemorative Year 2005, Matthew P. Berg Jan 2008

Commemoration Versus Coping With The Past: Contextualising Austria's Commemorative Year 2005, Matthew P. Berg

History

This essay explores the politics of memory in post-1945 Austrian political culture, focusing on the shift between the fiftieth anniversary of the Anschluss and the sixtieth anniversary of the end of the Second World War. Postwar Austrian society experienced a particular tension associated with the Nazi past, manifested in communicative and cultural forms of memory. On the one hand, the support of many for the Third Reich—expressed through active or passive complicity—threatened to link Austria with the perpetrator status reserved for German society. On the other, the Allies’ Moscow Declaration (1943) created a myth of victimization by Germany that allowed …

Over The Range, Richard V. Francaviglia Jan 2008

Over The Range, Richard V. Francaviglia

All USU Press Publications

Francaviglia looks anew at the geographical-historical context of the driving of the golden spike in May 1869. He gazes outward from the site of the transcontinental railroad's completion—the summit of a remote mountain range that extends south into the Great Salt Lake. The transportation corridor that for the first time linked America's coasts gave this distinctive region significance, but it anchored two centuries of human activity linked to the area's landscape. Francaviglia brings to that larger story a geographer's perspective on place and society, a railroad enthusiast's knowledge of trains, a cartographic historian's understanding of the knowledge and experience embedded …

The Rhetoric(S) Of St. Augustine's Confessions, James M. Farrell Jan 2008

The Rhetoric(S) Of St. Augustine's Confessions, James M. Farrell

Communication

In this essay, I offer a sympathetic reading of the rhetoric(s) of Augustine’s Confessions. First, as a historian of rhetoric I am interested in what Augustine’s narrative can tell us about the theory and practice of rhetoric in the late classical period and the early Christian era. From this perspective, I am interested in exploring what Augustine discloses about the rhetoric he learned in the provincial Roman schools, and taught at Carthage, Rome, and Milan. Second, I am interested in Augustine’s own work on rhetoric, especially his De Doctrina Christiana, most of which he composed during the period right before …

History Of Bethlehem United Methodist Church, Bishopville, South Carolina, Circa 1814-2008, John Kelley Segars, Dorothy Tedder Smith, Linda Haley Sutherland, Betty Brown Truesdale

Methodist Books

This story of Bethlehem United Methodist Church is compiled with much love and deep appreciation of those earlier dedicated Methodists who organized this Church and of those (including early church historians, newspaper editors, archives and courthouse employees) who shared information that is being used by the authors to write this revised version of her history.

While researching and recording this history, we discovered numerous church land conveyances, newspaper articles, 1878-1928 history of the Woman's Missionary Society of Bethlehem, other data that had not been recorded in prior histories, and numerous bits of information about events that occurred during 1990-2008. We …

The Cross Beyond The Wall: Protestant Christianity In Communist China, Jennifer Clapp Jan 2008

The Cross Beyond The Wall: Protestant Christianity In Communist China, Jennifer Clapp

Theses & Honors Papers

Before the days of Communist China, religions were widely accepted. This is how many religions like; Christianity, Buddhism, Hinduism, and Islam became present in China. Unfortunately the strong Chinese culture and dedication to Confucian principals halted this; Chinese Christians were cut off from the rest of the Christian world. This was an ongoing change and different leaders took control of China. Yet through it all Christianity hung on by a thread. When Communism was established fully, a few Protestant-Christian leaders works closely with the government leaders to establish the Three Self church and strict laws were put in place to …
