Department of History: Faculty Publications

Sharon Jansen is a historian who has published a number of fine books, including Dangerous Talk and Strange Behavior: Women and Popular Resistance to the Reforms of Henry VIII and, of particular interest to this review, The Monstrous Regiment of Women: Female Rulers in Early Modern Europe, a book that examined the strong women who ruled in a variety of fashions, as regnant or regent. She begins her current book, Debating Women, describing being in the British Library in 1996 doing research on her Monstrous Regiment book. The Great White Mother: Maternalism And American Indian Child Removal In The American West, 1880-1940, Margaret D. Jacobs Jan 2008

The Great White Mother: Maternalism And American Indian Child Removal In The American West, 1880-1940, Margaret D. Jacobs

Department of History: Faculty Publications

A rich historiography has accumulated regarding American Indian boarding schools and the experience of Indian children within them. Western women's historians have also studied many white women who were involved in efforts to advocate for American Indians. Yet, in general, these two historiographical tracks have developed along parallel lines without intersecting. This essay argues, however, that white women were integrally involved in the removal of American Indian children to boarding schools and that their involvement implicated them in one of the most cruel, yet largely unexamined, policies of colonialism within the American West. Through a politics of maternalism, many white …

Review: Brenz Als Kontroverstheologe. Die Apologie Der Confessio Virtembergica Und Die Auseinandersetzung Zwischen Johannes Brenz Und Pedro De Soto, Amy Nelson Burnett Jan 2008

Review: Brenz Als Kontroverstheologe. Die Apologie Der Confessio Virtembergica Und Die Auseinandersetzung Zwischen Johannes Brenz Und Pedro De Soto, Amy Nelson Burnett

Department of History: Faculty Publications

Johannes Brenz is known primarily as the organiser of the Württemberg Church and as one of the major figures in the development of Lutheran Christology. This book looks at another aspect of Brenz’s career, his role as defender of Lutheran theology against challenges by Catholic theologians. In 1555 the Spanish Dominican Pedro de Soto published an attack on the Württemberg Confession, which had been written by Brenz and presented at the second session of the Council of Trent in 1552. This led Brenz to write a lengthy Apology of the Württemberg Confession that was published over the next four years …

Argentinien Als Ns-Fluchtziel. Die Emigration Von Kriegsverbrechern Und Nationalsozialisten Durch Italien An Den Rio De La Plata 1946-1955. Mythos Und Wirklichkeit, Gerald Steinacher

Department of History: Faculty Publications

Turning Water Into Power: Debates Over The Development Of Tanzania’S Rufiji River Basin, 1945–1985, Heather J. Hoag, May-Britt Öhman Jan 2008

Turning Water Into Power: Debates Over The Development Of Tanzania’S Rufiji River Basin, 1945–1985, Heather J. Hoag, May-Britt Öhman

History

This historical analysis examines the forces that shaped the collection and use of geographical data in Tanzania’s Rufiji Basin. Hoping to develop irrigated agriculture, colonial engineers surveyed the basin’s social and environmental landscapes and weighed the costs of damming. Following World War II, international experts interested in hydropower development conducted more geographical studies. While their studies offered limited information on stream flow, political and economic pressures led to their acceptance over those of colonial engineers. By illustrating how international institutions select what is accepted as knowledge and how such knowledge is used, the case highlights the politics of hydropower development …

Anecdotal Insights: Changing Perceptions Of Italian Women Artists In Eighteenth-Century Life Stories, Julia K. Dabbs Jan 2008

Anecdotal Insights: Changing Perceptions Of Italian Women Artists In Eighteenth-Century Life Stories, Julia K. Dabbs

Art History Publications

“Why can’t a woman be more like a man?” Professor Henry Higgins’s androcentric lament from the musical My Fair Lady would have resounded with male biographers of the eighteenth century who wrote about the perplexing phenomenon of the woman artist. Since the Renaissance, writers of artistic biographical compendia had characterized the few female artists included in their volumes in distinctly different ways from their male counterparts, mainly due to lingering prejudices concerning the intellectual abilities and societal roles of women. Emulating Castiglione’s vision of the ideal Renaissance lady, biographers such as Giorgio Vasari, Carlo Ridolfi, and Carlo Cesare Malvasia emphasized …

"Keep On Keeping On": African Americans And The Implementation Of Brown V. Board Of Education In Virginia, Brian J. Daugherity

History Publications

This chapter examines African American efforts to implement the Brown decision in Virginia. While considering how government officials, segregationist organizations, and white supporters influenced the implementation process, this study focuses on how the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People and its supporters in Virginia sought to bring about school desegregation in the state. Blending African American, southern, legal, and civil rights history, the story sheds new light on the school desegregation process and the early years of the civil rights movement in Virginia.
