Interview No. 1184, Carmen Velazquez

Ms. Velazquez briefly describes her childhood and family; she recalls being young and naïve enough to believe that coming to the United States guaranteed money; when she was sixteen years old, she married José Bartolo Velázquez; shortly after their nuptials, he went to Empalme, Sonora, México, to enlist in the bracero program; while he was away, she and her ten children lived with her father; she remembers not having enough money for cloth diapers, having to tear up whatever clothes she could find, and constantly washing; what little money he did manage to send she used to buy necessities for …

Once Upon The North Pole, Regina Anne Roselli May 2006

Once Upon The North Pole, Regina Anne Roselli

Dissertations and Theses

The North Pole can be imagined in two ways. The first, the Magnetic North Pole, is based on the Earth's magnetic field, which is in constant flux. It is a general area of the Arctic that isn't affixed to a specific geographic location but moves to where the lines of magnetic force enter and exit the earth vertically. The second, the true North Pole, refers to its actual physical and fixed geographic location, 90° N. It lays below miles of the Arctic Ocean's water, hundreds of miles from the nearest land.

The North Pole has fueled man's imagination for centuries. …

Interview No. 1169, Guadalupe Garcia

Combined Interviews

The History Of The Development Of The Department Of Technology At East Tennessee State University (1911-2002)., Vincent Edward Banks May 2006

The History Of The Development Of The Department Of Technology At East Tennessee State University (1911-2002)., Vincent Edward Banks

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to produce a written account of the history of the development of the Department of Technology at East Tennessee State University, from 1911 to 2002. Information about the department's history was gathered from various sources and was then organized into a manuscript format. Throughout the document, emphasis remained on four main topic areas; significant name changes, academic/curriculum modifications, faculty changes, and other notable changes/events. This research was unique since in the department's ninety-plus years of existence, no consolidated, written account of its history had ever been created.

Oedipus' Wake: The (Neo-)Masculinization Of The Self In Late Twentieth-Century American Women's Memoir, Thomas Johnson May 2006

Oedipus' Wake: The (Neo-)Masculinization Of The Self In Late Twentieth-Century American Women's Memoir, Thomas Johnson

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Without pretensions to exhaustiveness, this study briefly examines the mid- to late-twentieth-century flowering of western theory and criticism built around autobiographical writing and follows the feminist branch(es) of that theory and criticism through a reading of the following four memoirs: Autobiography of a Face by Lucy Grealy, All the Lost Girls by Patricia Foster, Lying by Lauren Slater, and Prozac Nation by Elizabeth Wurtzel. Using both Freudian and Lacanian psychoanalytic theory as they relate to literature, I argue that the selves these four women write in their memoirs are not selves built around the model historically set for women by …

¡Presente! The Prophetic Legacy Of Monseñor Oscar Romero, Carmen M. Nanko-Fernández May 2006

¡Presente! The Prophetic Legacy Of Monseñor Oscar Romero, Carmen M. Nanko-Fernández

Journal of Hispanic / Latino Theology

This essay, the 2005 Romero Lecture at Wesley Theological Seminary, Washington D.C., assesses the prophetic legacy of the late Salvadoran Archbishop, Mons. Óscar A. Romero, amid reflection on several public sculptures of prophetic figures in Washington and San Juan, Puerto Rico, including Romero and John the Baptist. The author argues that the prophetic is a vital force, making present the brave voices and spirits of the Christian past in words, memory, and public art.

Samuel Miller (1769–1850) And Professional Education For The Ministry, Robert John Robertson May 2006

Samuel Miller (1769–1850) And Professional Education For The Ministry, Robert John Robertson

SPU Works

In the Nineteenth Century graduate theological education became the dominant form of training for the ministry in Protestant churches. In North America, one of the first institutions founded to provide graduate training for the ministry was the Theological Seminary of the Presbyterian Church in the United States of America at Princeton. This thesis examines the life and work of Samuel Miller (1769-1850), one of the key proponents for the foundation of, what is now, Princeton Theological Seminary and one of its first professors. Through an examination of the context of his life, his response to the perceived failure of training …

Civil Rights In Black And Green: Towards A Transatlantic Understanding Of The Civil Rights Movements In The United States And Northern Ireland, Mollie Gabrys May 2006

Civil Rights In Black And Green: Towards A Transatlantic Understanding Of The Civil Rights Movements In The United States And Northern Ireland, Mollie Gabrys

American Studies Honors Projects

Due to the lack of recognition for the solidarity between movements for civil rights, little formal scholarship acknowledging the relationship between African Americans and Nationalists in Northern Ireland exists. Nationalists in Northern Ireland, however, have long identified with African American civil rights activists in a cross-cultural quest for equality. From Northern Ireland’s very first protests against discrimination, civil rights campaigners firmly aligned themselves with the ideological framework modeled in the United States. In this thesis, I explore the interconnectedness of civil rights struggles in the United States and in Northern Ireland through the use of scholarly, primary, and secondary documents.

Slaveowners And Southern Soldiers : The Military Participation Of The Slaveholding Community In Civil War Lunenburg County, Virginia, Glenn Seiler May 2006

Slaveowners And Southern Soldiers : The Military Participation Of The Slaveholding Community In Civil War Lunenburg County, Virginia, Glenn Seiler

Master's Theses

Before the final shot of the Civil War rang out, the phrase "a rich man's war, poor man's fight" was well embedded in the psyche of Confederate citizens. Many historians credit such perceptions with ultimately condemning the Confederacy to failure. While numerous government policies seemed to emphasize a sense of protection toward the men of affluent Southern families, Confederate leaders disputed such claims. To the common Southerner the rich did not contribute in an equitable share of the fighting and often sought personal gain while the masses endured hardships. There can be no doubt internal class dissent plagued the Confederacy …

Menander's Samia: A New Translation, Seth A. Jeppesen

Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects

It is a commonplace thing nowadays for people to get home from work or school and settle down in front of the television to watch their favorite sitcom. There are numerous ones to choose from, but most of them involve a family or tightly knit group of friends who wander their way through seemingly everyday situations, dealing with them humorously, but in the same way you might expect someone you know to deal with them. We watch these shows, laugh at them, think about them, and sometimes even incorporate phrases and lines we hear from them into our everyday speech …

Monuments And Massacre: The Art Of Remembering, Lafe Gerald Conner May 2006

Monuments And Massacre: The Art Of Remembering, Lafe Gerald Conner

Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects

Rain transformed the dusty trail outside our trailer into a highway of sediments speeding and settling. Inside the trailer I pulled on my boots and raincoat while my dad slipped into a larger version of his own. Then, with my two brothers, we embarked in puddle play. Aimed at impeding the torrent, we employed any object; rocks, branches, wood chips, even our own wet boots and hands. Eight years old, maybe nine and I knew nothing about erosion or sedimentation, only that rain brought the stream and the stream brought puddle play.

I hold this memory, feeling its grainy texture …
