The African novel refers to a socio-political as well as a literary History, but does so with guile, expressing this History from an angle. Referring constantly to the social and human sciences, to the point of competing with them, the novel vacillates between dependency and autonomy. It thus proposes a specific knowledge of society, its functioning, and the individuals who constitute it. However, its true intention is not to copy the world, nor even to imitate its life, but to provide a miniaturized replica of both, and set itself up as a vast metonymic duplicate of a certain universe.

L’Historiographie Positiviste Au Miroir De La Fiction Littéraire, Kasereka Kavwahirehi Dec 2006

L’Historiographie Positiviste Au Miroir De La Fiction Littéraire, Kasereka Kavwahirehi

In its study of L’Écart by V.Y. Mudimbe, this article examines the critical and ironic mirroring of the discourses of the social sciences. By highlighting the pretensions of scientific discourse, Mudimbe’s fiction reveals the ambiguity and the limits of positivist methodology in a postcolonial context.

Murambi Et Moisson De Crânes Ou Comment La Fiction Raconte Un Génocide, Josias Semujanga Dec 2006

Murambi Et Moisson De Crânes Ou Comment La Fiction Raconte Un Génocide, Josias Semujanga

This article shows how literary fiction is able to narrate the event of genocide so as to shatter the rational explanations of the world that are the accepted framework for discourse. It studies two texts written on the Rwandan genocide: Murambi by Boubacar Boris Diop and Moisson de crânes by Abdourahman Waberi.

The theme of travel occupies an important place in African literature for two reasons. The earliest African writers wanted to substitute their own discourse for the one that had been produced by the West for centuries and which was long considered to be the sole legitimate discourse on Africa. By portraying African heroes and/or narrators who embarked on voyages to Africa or to Europe, African writers showed that the African too could be a traveler. The second reason is linked to generic considerations. Since the time of Don Quixote, the novel unfolds as an itinerary moving from one point to …

The Marking Of Stuart Chase As A "Red Accountant" - An Epic (1917-1921), Richard Vangermeersch Dec 2006

The Marking Of Stuart Chase As A "Red Accountant" - An Epic (1917-1921), Richard Vangermeersch

Special Collections (Miscellaneous)

There has been recent scholarship by Bradley and Merino (1994) and Vangermeersch (2005) on this event and the subsequent eventual firing of Stuart Chase by the FTC. Bradley and Merino’s scholarship was limited to 1918 and 1919. Vangermeersch’s scholarship was limited to two narrow time periods (Oct. 20, 1919 and then from June 1920 to mid January 1921). This piece is written to extend the time frame from early 1917 through August of 1921. This piece, not only takes a broader time period, also broadens the scope of the prior scholarship. This piece examines many documents, articles, and testimony not …

Urban Rivalry In A Rural County: The Contest For Dominance Between Rockdale And Cameron In Milam County, Texas, 1873-1954, Philip Guy Pope

History Theses - Archive

Throughout the history of the United States, natural resources have played key roles in determining where towns are formed, and when towns will die. For just as long, waterways, roadways, and railroads have played an equally important role in determining the location and success of many towns. This thesis builds on these two broad themes—resources and transportation—to examine how Rockdale, Texas was able to become the most powerful town in southern Milam County, and successfully compete with Cameron, Texas for dominance in Milam County. Cameron was the established county seat in Milam County when in 1873, the International & Great …

Early Belgian Colonial Efforts: The Long And Fateful Shadow Of Leopold I, Robert R. Ansiaux

History Dissertations - Archive

The continuing debate over the causes, effects and future implications of European colonialism and imperialism is perhaps best viewed through a transatlantic lens. The various phases of imperialism from 1415 through 1914 provide ample time and examples of this continuous cultural interchange. The last of these interchanges, forced or otherwise, is that of the New Imperialism of 1860-1914. Discussions of later globalization and economic/cultural imperialism are not covered. That discussion is a different subject perhaps requiring different tools of analysis, especially economic. The impact of this last period reverberates through the current world discussion on rights, obligations, morality and law, …

Fiends Who Bear The Shapes Of Men: Case Studies On White Male And Black Female Relationships In The South, Amanda Bayne Pritchard Dec 2006

Fiends Who Bear The Shapes Of Men: Case Studies On White Male And Black Female Relationships In The South, Amanda Bayne Pritchard

History Theses - Archive

Slave women resisted being sexually dominated by white men, by refusing to accept that their lives were beyond their control. By examining cases of slave women who resisted white sexually assertive men, I will display how women slave women resisted the status of sexual subjugation, and instead used their sexuality to manipulate situations to improve their quality of life. Slave women were not immune to the sexual corruption in the South, but they used their circumstances to provide themselves with a healthier lifestyle. Based upon a slave woman's response to the sexual advances of whites, one can determine that there …

Away O'Er The Waves: The Transatlantic Life And Literature Of Captain Mayne Reid, Steven Ray Butler Dec 2006

Away O'Er The Waves: The Transatlantic Life And Literature Of Captain Mayne Reid, Steven Ray Butler

History Dissertations - Archive

Although largely forgotten today, adventure novelist Mayne Reid, an Irish-born veteran of the United States' war with Mexico, was a household name on both sides of the Atlantic Ocean during the mid-to-late nineteenth century. A prolific writer, Reid authored more than fifty "romances"; some of which were reportedly based on his own experiences while traveling and working in the southwestern United States during the early 1840s. Approximately half his works were aimed at the juvenile market. This study builds on previous biographies of Reid, both published and unpublished, to form a more complete picture of the author's life than has …

Cannibalism In A Cultural Context: Cartographic Imagery And Iconography Of The New World Indigenous Peoples During The Age Of Discovery, Cynthia Ann Chambers Dec 2006

Cannibalism In A Cultural Context: Cartographic Imagery And Iconography Of The New World Indigenous Peoples During The Age Of Discovery, Cynthia Ann Chambers

History Dissertations - Archive

This dissertation seeks to explore the imagery of the indigenous peoples as cannibals on the fifteenth-century cartography of the New World. This imagery represented the Amerindians of the South American interior on maps and in the minds of Europeans who relied on accounts and illustrations to inform them about the New World. The geographic specificity of cannibal imagery on New World cartography reflected the accounts by voyagers who returned from their transatlantic journey. While many of the cartographers never left the European countries of their origin, their work often encompassed both the littoral boundaries and the cultural differences that defined …

"If 3000 Men Were Unanimous On Any Subject, You Would Know At Once They Were Not Doctors": The Slow And Difficult Path To Professionalization Of Medicine In Texas, Calli Johnson Vaquera

History Theses - Archive

This thesis seeks to explain the growing dominance of allopathic medicine and the struggle of professional organizations, such as the Texas Medical Association, for the professionalization of medicine. Chapter One illustrates how nineteenth century practices, values, rivalries, and emphasis on local, rather than national concerns, continued to undermine the Texas Medical Association's goal of professionalization of medicine in Texas. Chapter Two of this paper begins at the dawn of the twentieth century and depicts how several strategic changes by the Texas Medical Association led to legislative victories. However, Chapter Three describes the limitations of professionalization of medicine in Texas. By …

If it is recognized that The Ambiguous Adventure is one of Africa’s most studied texts, it should also be noted that most analyses of Cheikh Hamidou Kane’s novel are general sociological commentaries on a mythologized Africa or on a society that is caught in the snares of its own mythic “values.” These commentaries often forget that the text is also the passage through a history that was imposed on Africa, and one which the writer tries to interpret in his own way. If Kane’s text plunges into the Christian faith by invoking Pascal and Augustine, it is in order to …

From which viewpoint do Gabonese writers relate to the realities of the political and social policies of their country and what place do political players occupy in their works? Why do they hesitate so much to denounce the problems of their society? Why is there such a pronounced silence within their literary works? This article raises these delicate and complex questions. The report produced on the evolution of Gabonese writing affirms that writers’ silence is the product of self-censorship. They are condemned to fear saying anything, not only because of potential reprisals, but because they are, for the majority, political …
