Queequeg's Tomahawk: A Cultural Biography, 1750-1900, Timothy J. Shannon Jul 2005

Queequeg's Tomahawk: A Cultural Biography, 1750-1900, Timothy J. Shannon

History Faculty Publications

Since the colonial era, the tomahawk has served as a symbol of Indian savagery in American arts and literature. The pipe tomahawk, however, tells a different story. From its backcountry origins as a trade good to its customization as a diplomatic device, this object facilitated European-Indian exchange, giving tangible form to spoken metaphors for war, peace, and alliance. The production, distribution, and use of the pipe tomahawk also illustrated contrasting Indian and European notions of value and utility in material objects, exposing the limits of such goods in promoting cross-cultural mediation and understanding.

Nevin's History: A Novel Of Texas By Jim Sanderson (Review), James B. Sullivan

History Faculty Publications

This novel of Borderlands violence and romance is an enjoyable read for anyone, especially those interested in Texana. The author, writing as if he is the main character, Andrew Nevin, gives a sense of authenticity in his first-person account. One could hardly miss parallels between an impending second war with Mexico following a Texas Ranger invasion into Mexico and the current war in Iraq. The consumption-ridden Texas Ranger, Captain McNelly, who is also a Baptist preacher, when home from his campaigns, believes he is on a crusade and that God is on his side, so whatever happens on the border …

Ethnic Conflict In South Texas: 1860–1930, Alberto Rodriguez Jul 2005

Ethnic Conflict In South Texas: 1860–1930, Alberto Rodriguez

Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA

South Texas ethnic conflict has been documented as a White/Brown struggle excluding the many Blacks that came to the border from 1860–1930. Blacks that came to South Texas faced legal segregation by Anglos and a Mexican caste system that dated back to Spanish colonial times. Alliances with both Anglos and Mexican caused both social mobility and conflict for South Texas Blacks. This research argues that Blacks have been marginalized by both Anglos and Mexicans on the South Texas border. It describes the different waves of Black migration to South Texas and their interaction with the Anglo ruling class and the …

The Sharper Image: Bringing Irish Nationalist Identity Into Focus, 1880-1923, Meghan M. Ferriter Jul 2005

The Sharper Image: Bringing Irish Nationalist Identity Into Focus, 1880-1923, Meghan M. Ferriter

History Theses & Dissertations

From 1880 to 1923, Irish nationalists created and sustained an independent cultural identity shaped by external and internal forces. Images published in Punch, or the London Charivari, provide external factors of identity that evolve from exaggerated threat to trivial concern while the nationalist political demands they represent escalate.

Identity is the product of complex interaction and compromise between external and internal definitions. Individuals …
