Warriors Of The Skyline : A Gendered Study Of Mohawk Warrior Culture, Anthony Patrick Curtis Jan 2005

Warriors Of The Skyline : A Gendered Study Of Mohawk Warrior Culture, Anthony Patrick Curtis

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

This analysis provides a better understanding of how members of the Mohawk tribe strived to maintain their cultural and gender identity within a white male-dominated high steel industry. This thesis examines traditional Mohawk warrior culture, meaning traditional Mohawk rites of passage and Mohawk male gender roles, through analyzing the role of Mohawk skywalkers in the late 19th and early 20th century. In tribal Mohawk society, the passage from adolescence to manhood was representative of a boy becoming a warrior. By exhibiting bravery, he earned the title of warrior and, consistent with his new tribal stature, increased his chances at marriage …

Roosevelt’S Monetary Policy, Steven Napier Jan 2005

Roosevelt’S Monetary Policy, Steven Napier

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

This qualitative analysis of the monetary policies of Franklin D. Roosevelt and his administration covers his entire presidency. Through scholarly research based on arguments presented in major scholarly publications, great questions are raised as to the primary causes of the economic successes of the Roosevelt administration. Some of the most conservative and reputable scholars in history, while disagreeing with most of the measures taken by Roosevelt to regulate the economy, agree that the goals by the administration to raise the prices of basic commodities was generally achieved. The thesis demonstrates that almost all of FDR’s economic successes were the direct …

Along Navajo Trails: Recollections Of A Trader, 1898-1948, Will Evans Jan 2005

Along Navajo Trails: Recollections Of A Trader, 1898-1948, Will Evans

All USU Press Publications

Will Evans's writings should find a special niche in the small but significant body of literature from and about traders to the Navajos. Evans was the proprietor of the Shiprock Trading Company. Probably more than most of his fellow traders, he had a strong interest in Navajo culture. The effort he made to record and share what he learned certainly was unusual. He published in the Farmington and New Mexico newspapers and other periodicals, compiling many of his pieces into a book manuscript. His subjects were Navajos he knew and traded with, their stories of historic events such as the …

French Lessons: F.P. Baker, American Forestry, And The 1878 Paris Universal Exposition, Char Miller

Pomona Faculty Publications and Research

Although he never became a forester, F. P. Baker did much to advance the profession’s cause. Its potential became clear to him while serving as a U.S. Commissioner to the 1878 Paris Exposition, during which he reported on European forestry, its scientific methods and political meaning. Returning home, he was inspired to advance forestry in America.

Proving Ground: Richard Harding Davis In The American West, Char Miller Jan 2005

Proving Ground: Richard Harding Davis In The American West, Char Miller

Pomona Faculty Publications and Research

The idea of Texas staggered Richard Harding Davis. That, in any event, is how the youthful managing editor of Harper's Weekly portrayed his response to the Lone Star State after boarding a train in New York City and heading south in January 1892 for a three-month tour of Texas, Oklahoma, and Colorado. At twenty-eight, already a much-heralded journalist for his investigative reports on Philadelphia's underworld, and his gripping accounts of the devastating Johnstown Flood of 1889, Davis had been editing Harper's tor a year and was eager for a change of pace. A western jaunt, he reasoned, would present a …

Enchanted Islands Floating On The Foam Of Perilous Seas, Jean Macintyre Jan 2005

Enchanted Islands Floating On The Foam Of Perilous Seas, Jean Macintyre

Quidditas

In localizing The Tempest on “an uninhabited island,” the 1623 Shakespeare Folio associates the setting with the floating island that some masque machines represented. Such machines acted as movable stages to transport masquers from within the set to the spot from which their dances would begin; other masques allege that their immobile sets were also floating islands. Though the stages, permanent or temporary, on which The Tempest was performed were not mobile, they nonetheless were a kind of island surrounded by spectators, on which the magician Prospero, aided by Ariel, writes, casts, and directs a play whose roles are unwittingly …

Romancing The Chronicles: 1 Henry Iv And The Rewriting Of Medieval History, Bradley Greenburg Jan 2005

Romancing The Chronicles: 1 Henry Iv And The Rewriting Of Medieval History, Bradley Greenburg

Quidditas

This essay explores the ways Shakespeare’s 1 Henry IV deploys Welshness as a counterforce to English national stability. I argue that the critical habit of equating the genre of romance with untruthfulness or silliness does not pay close enough attention to what Shakespeare does in his history plays. The Hal he gives us, whose youth and military training in Wales he suppresses, is, generically, a romance character. But, instead of a knight in his father’s service (where his adventures would be securely in the service of the realm), or knight errant, he is an errant haunter of bad company, an …
