History Of The Glickman Family Library Building, Usm Libraries

Glickman Family Library

The Library building was built in 1919 as a bakery and operated as such until 1954 after which it was occupied by several businesses, but primarily Johnson's plumbing supply company. "Moving On," Men And The Changing Character Of Interwar Working-Class Neighborhoods: From The Files Of The Manchester And Liverpool City Police, Joanne Klein Jan 2004

"Moving On," Men And The Changing Character Of Interwar Working-Class Neighborhoods: From The Files Of The Manchester And Liverpool City Police, Joanne Klein

History Faculty Publications and Presentations

The files suggest that interwar neighborhoods were losing long-term residents and becoming more diverse and variable. Families tried to find areas with similar standards regarding noise, space and privacy. Formerly stable neighborhoods changed, creating stress if changes were too dramatic. Even minor tensions could unsettle streets since causes of strain tended to reflect on respectability and status. While women remained the main presence due to their domestic responsibilities, men were spending more time with their families. …

Land, Labor, And Leadership: The Political Economy Of Hualapai Community Building, 1910-1940, Jeffrey Shepherd Jan 2004

Land, Labor, And Leadership: The Political Economy Of Hualapai Community Building, 1910-1940, Jeffrey Shepherd

Selected Works Temporary Series

Increasingly, scholars are exploring the complex interplay between economic change and cultural identity, in which native communities and individuals respond creatively to the challenges post by captialism and wage labor. Utilizing political economy as an interpretive framework, this essay explores the ways Hualapais incorporated changes around them into their worldviews and agendas. In doing so, it moves beyond questions of agency and adapptation, persistence and innovation, to suggest that scholars consider how "incorporation," frequently seen as a unidirectional, not to mention wholly destructive, phenomenon, can in fact me multifaceted and constructive.

'Sing To The Lord A New Song': The Regular Singing Movement In Colonial New England, Katie Farrer Jan 2004

'Sing To The Lord A New Song': The Regular Singing Movement In Colonial New England, Katie Farrer

The Gettysburg Historical Journal

“Outward Melody in Religious Singing is no small Help to inward Devotion. In this our imbodyd [sic] State the Senses do very strongly impress the superior Power of the Mind; especially the Ear and Eye do variously affect the Heart.” Cotton Mather penned these words in April of 1721 as part of a sermon that he wrote endorsing Regular Singing, or singing by note rather than by ear. Mather, along with several other Puritan ministers were the driving forces behind the Regular Singing movement, which in essence was a sea change for music in religious services in New England, involving …

In Quest Of True Equality: A Study Of The Climate For Women At Gettysburg Since 1975, Sara Gustafson Jan 2004

In Quest Of True Equality: A Study Of The Climate For Women At Gettysburg Since 1975, Sara Gustafson

The Gettysburg Historical Journal

In 2003, the election of Katherine Haley Will as Gettysburg College’s thirteenth president began a new era for women on campus. Will will be the first female president in the history of the college, and her election signifies the tremendous legal and psychological changes that have shaken both the college and the nation over the past quarter century. Federal legislation, the slowly-broadening vision of the school’s administration, and the proactive stance taken by women themselves have contributed to making Gettysburg College a place of seemingly strong gender equality.

Paul Schlesinger, who wrote under the pseudonym Sling, along with his colleagues Carl von Ossietzky, Kurt Tucholsky, Gabrielle Tiergit wrote of the sensational and the mundane, the political and the everyday cases, all of which provided the basis for social commentary and political criticism. Some have argued that the eagerness of …

Protecting All Animals: A Fifty-Year History Of The Humane Society Of The United States, Bernard Unti

eBooks

In 1954, when The Humane Society of the United States was founded by a small handful of dedicated visionaries, the modern concept of "animal welfare" barely existed. Fifty years later, The HSUS is the nation's largest animal protection organization, with a constituency of more than 8 million people, and a leader in the parallel rise of the modern animal welfare movement. Protecting All Animals: A Fifty-Year History of The Humane Society of the United States is more than a chronicle of one organization; it is the saga of the journey toward a truly humane society.
