Eighteenth-Century British Circulating Libraries And Cultural Book History, Edward Jacobs
Eighteenth-Century British Circulating Libraries And Cultural Book History, Edward Jacobs
English Faculty Publications
Circulating library catalogs offer one of the most revealing views available of book publishing and reading in eighteenth-century Britain, since those catalogs and the libraries they document were put together by book traders whose livelihood depended upon giving an unprecedentedly wide range of British readers the books they wanted. Of course, the perspective on eighteenth-century British book culture provided by their catalogs is nowhere near as comprehensive as the Eighteenth-Century Short Title Catalog (ESTC) or the recently published first volume of The English Novel 1770– 1829: A Bibliographical Survey of Prose Fiction Published in the British Isles (TEN), which “seeks …

Archaeology And The Changing View Of Custer's Last Stand, Nick Reonas
Archaeology And The Changing View Of Custer's Last Stand, Nick Reonas
The Corinthian
On August 9, a grass fire burned one hundred acres of land north of the Little Bighorn Battlefield before being contained. Overnight, the wind kicked up smoldering embers east of the Calhoun Hill area of the battlefield, and the fire spread quickly. Park rangers and employees saved the visitor center and National Cemetery, but the rest of the battlefield was scorched. This could have been a disaster, but James Court, superintendent of what was then known as Custer National Monument, saw the potential presented by the lack of brush and grass, which before the fire had grown so thick on …

Perceptions Of Classical Armenia: Romano-Parthian Relations, 70 Bc-Ad 220, John Joseph Poirot, Iii
Perceptions Of Classical Armenia: Romano-Parthian Relations, 70 Bc-Ad 220, John Joseph Poirot, Iii
LSU Master's Theses
Relative to its importance, little research has been done on the Romano-Parthian rivalry that existed during the first two centuries AD. By extension, even less has been written concerning the kingdom of classical Armenia, which often served as the focal point of that bitter conflict. The absence of such research is regrettable, for it was this very rivalry that dictated how the Empire’s eastern border would be defined. According to many modern scholars and several of the classical authors, Romans feared the looming threat of the Parthian state. Although such panic was unfounded, this fear supposedly then prompted the Empire’s …
Beavers, Firs, Salmon, And Falling Water: Pacific Northwest Regionalism And The Environment, William L. Lang
Beavers, Firs, Salmon, And Falling Water: Pacific Northwest Regionalism And The Environment, William L. Lang
History Faculty Publications and Presentations
Discusses the importance of salmon in defining environmental understanding in the Pacific Northwest. Dam construction, population influx, economic development, and politics have dramatically changed the geography of Oregon Country since 1850. The technological alterations and population growth redefined the sense of place. However, salmon has remained the most important icon of the Pacific Northwest, both for Native Americans and for nonnatives have who worked to save the salmon from extinction. Salmon have become a "living metaphor" for the region, and their fate reflects an understanding of historical context and the role of people in their relationship to the environment in …
York Of The Corps Of Discovery, Darrell Millner
York Of The Corps Of Discovery, Darrell Millner
Black Studies Faculty Publications and Presentations
Assesses the scholarship dealing with York, William Clark's slave, who was a member of the Lewis and Clark Expedition. Two schools of writing developed regarding York. The "Sambo" school dominated his depiction for almost two centuries and publications at the turn of the 21st century still saw York in racist terms, as a slave grateful for his status. At the other extreme is the "superhero" school that describes York in heroic terms, rescuing Clark from peril, fluent in French, tall in height. Both schools are grounded in stereotypes and poor scholarship. The best source for establishing a historically accurate York …
Russian Trade Prospects In Smyrna: An 1812 Consular Report, Theophilus C. Prousis
Russian Trade Prospects In Smyrna: An 1812 Consular Report, Theophilus C. Prousis
History Faculty Research and Scholarship
Documents on Russian commerce in the Black Sea and the Levant offer eyewitness description, firsthand observation and authentic information. These qualities, to varying degrees, are evinced in this translated memorandum penned by tsarist vice-consul Carlo A. Marracciny in Smyrna in December 1812 and addressed to Foreign Minister Rumiantsev. The Marracciny report merits attention by scholars of Russia's Eastern policy as a reminder that primary sources on Russian trade, and on wider tsarist aims, in the Near East warrant collection and presentation in an accessible format for students and scholars alike. This particular document might very well become a small piece …

The Influence Of Time, Barbara Finnegan
The Influence Of Time, Barbara Finnegan
Whittier Scholars Program
This project examines the lives and stories of five individuals who were all born over seventy years ago. Through these stories information was provided along with the history necessary to connect the past with the present. Through a series of questions and interviews there were several consistent patterns relevant in the lives of these five people. These patterns and themes helped to continue an understanding of how it is presently that we are still very much affected by history.

The Life Cycle Of A Coal Town: Widen, West Virginia, 1911-1963, Amanda J. Griffith
The Life Cycle Of A Coal Town: Widen, West Virginia, 1911-1963, Amanda J. Griffith
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The Elk River Coal and Lumber Company and its president, Joseph Gardner Bradley, built the town of Widen located in Clay County, West Virginia. As coal production proved successful, the coal town rapidly grew and by 1950, Widen offered amenities such as a Y.M.C.A., theater, soda fountain, schools, and churches for the diverse composition of miners to enjoy. In 1952, a fifteen-month strike marked the climax of the history of Widen. The struggle between the local union, known as the League of Widen Miners, and the United Mine Workers of America, resulted in the destruction of company and private property, …
