Magic - No! Miracle - Yes! The Founding And Early Development Of The University Of South Alabama, James F. Caldwell Jan 1998

Magic - No! Miracle - Yes! The Founding And Early Development Of The University Of South Alabama, James F. Caldwell

James Caldwell Book

This document's purpose is to present a thesis in the form of memoirs to account for my involvement in the development of the University of South Alabama. It was made possible by a confluence of several factors including federal legislation to help the nation meet the problems of demobilization of the military forces of the United States, the sweep of historic events having to do with the election of Harry Truman as president of the United States in 1948, the political situation in Alabama that led to the election of George C. Wallace as the governor of the State of …

Dad, I Served: The Autobiography Of C.J. Mclin, Jr., C. J. Mclin Jr., Minnie F. Johnson

Books Authored by Wright State Faculty/Staff

Dad, I Served: The Autobiography of C. J. McLin, Jr. in 1998 to is a tribute to the political life of the late Honorable C. J. McLin, Jr. While his sphere of influence grew significantly over a 22 year career in the Ohio General Assembly, C. J. McLin willfully remained in local and state politics: a courageous strategist, a tireless negotiator, and a tough-minded idealist who used his regional and national connections not for his own glory but for the welfare of the least of his constituents. His influence was sought not only by those he served, but by Democratic …

What A Saint Am I! : The Self-Canonization Of Madame Jeanne-Marie Guyon In The Quietist Controversy Of Seventeenth-Century France, Jennifer Marie Lior Blacke Jan 1998

What A Saint Am I! : The Self-Canonization Of Madame Jeanne-Marie Guyon In The Quietist Controversy Of Seventeenth-Century France, Jennifer Marie Lior Blacke

Dissertations and Theses

At the center of the heated Quietist Controversy in late seventeenthcentury France was Jeanne-Marie Guyon, whose writings and teachings on inner prayer were similar to those of recognized Catholic mystics. Unlike celebrated mystics, however, Mme Guyon expounded a doctrine which seemed to concentrate not only on holy indifference, but on herself as the sole mechanism by which others could attain union with God. A careful reading of the writings of Mme Guyon reveals a woman obsessed with herself --her salvation, her martyrdom, her popularity, and her superiority. Such a description corresponds perfectly with the suggestions of her foremost persecutor, the …

Ecology, Wilderness Selection, And The Salmonhuckleberry Roadless Area, Jason Scot Barker Jan 1998

Ecology, Wilderness Selection, And The Salmonhuckleberry Roadless Area, Jason Scot Barker

Dissertations and Theses

In the 1970s, the Forest Service used ecology in the process that led to the SalmonHuckleberry roadless area in the Mount Hood National Forest becoming a Congressionally designated Wilderness in 1984. This case study of the history of SalmonHuckleberry roadless area confirms the criticism made by environmentalists that noncommercial forest values have received much less priority than commercial uses in forest planning during the late 1960s and 1970s. This study of the area also reveals that the Forest Service's planning process was fundamentally flawed because Forest Service planners often lacked scientific data to support management decisions and downplayed the sigificnace …

Reporting The Counterrevolution : The Sed Perception Of “Prague Spring” As Reported In Neues Deutschland January 1-August 21, 1968, Lee Allen Evans Jan 1998

Reporting The Counterrevolution : The Sed Perception Of “Prague Spring” As Reported In Neues Deutschland January 1-August 21, 1968, Lee Allen Evans

Dissertations and Theses

In 1968, Czechoslovakia attempted to sweep the ashes of Stalinism from its path to socialism. The reform-movement "Prague Spring" united the nation with a goal to achieve a more just form of socialist society. When the Soviet Union and its Warsaw Pact allies invaded Czechoslovakia on August 21, 1968, they destroyed this dream.

The purpose of this thesis is to show how the SED interpreted events in Prague and presented their analysis to the East German public. Although imbedded in events in Czechoslovakia, this is an essay on German history.

The SED presented a public image of complete unity. The …

Secret Knowledge Of Genocide: British Failure To Disclose The Killing Of Jews In 1941, Kent Greenawalt Jan 1998

Secret Knowledge Of Genocide: British Failure To Disclose The Killing Of Jews In 1941, Kent Greenawalt

Faculty Scholarship

In the late summer and early autumn of 1941, the British military intercepted coded German radio messages that revealed that German troops were killing large numbers of Jewish civilians in German-occupied parts of the Soviet Union. The British did not make this knowledge public at that time, nor did they use their still classified records during the war crimes trials after the end of World War II.

Commentators more expert than I have addressed themselves to the question of whether the British had a legal obligation to disclose the information from the coded messages. These remarks concentrate on the possible …

Building The Imagined Community: Dominican Exempla And Theological Knowledge, Andrea L. Winkler Jan 1998

Building The Imagined Community: Dominican Exempla And Theological Knowledge, Andrea L. Winkler

Quidditas

During the thirteenth century, preachers considered sermons to be among the most important methods of communicating written material to the unlettered. Within a sermon, the use of exempla—short stories used to illustrate a moral point—was a primary means of disseminating theological information, and throughout the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries the number of exempla compilations intended as preaching aids increased markedly. Exempla collectors such as Caesarius of Heisterbach and Stephen of Bourbon shared and re-used stories to disseminate theological knowledge. Despite the communal nature of exempla, individual stories were more than unidirectional theological transmissions or stock tales repeated with …

John Skelton's "Agenst Garnesche": Poetic Territorialism, At The Court Of Henry Viii, Victor I. Scherb Jan 1998

John Skelton's "Agenst Garnesche": Poetic Territorialism, At The Court Of Henry Viii, Victor I. Scherb

Quidditas

John Skelton's 1514 flyting "Agenst Garnesche" has been subject to little critical scrutiny. This neglect can perhaps be attributed to the fact that Christopher Garnesche's contribution is missing, but it is also characteristic of the relative neglect accorded to the flyting as a genre, a neglect that has also colored the interpretation of many of Skelton's more abusive poems. One critic, for example, has dismissed the poem as being "nothing but personal abuse of a particularly virulent type . . . adorned with a singular collection of epithets and incomprehensible allusions, which serve only to befog and irritate the reader." …

Objects Of Desire: Reading The Material World Metaphysically In Marguerite De Navarre's Heptaméron, Catharine Randall Jan 1998

Objects Of Desire: Reading The Material World Metaphysically In Marguerite De Navarre's Heptaméron, Catharine Randall

Quidditas

Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth,

where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal.

But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven,

where moth and rust do not destroy,

and where thieves do not break in and steal.

For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.

Hooting: Public And Popular Discourse About Sex Discrimination, Kenneth Schneyer Jan 1998

Hooting: Public And Popular Discourse About Sex Discrimination, Kenneth Schneyer

Humanities Department Faculty Publications & Research

In recent years there have been a surprising number of legal attacks on the restaurant chain called Hooters. These attacks have all been based, one way or another, on a claim of sex discrimination in employment. Yet the attacks vary considerably: some are based on claims of sexual harassment, some on claims by private individuals that they have been discriminated against in hiring because they are male, still others on general claims that the chain is engaged in systemic sex discrimination. Many of these claims are concerned with the troubling boundaries of the bona fide occupational qualification, that uncomfortable defense …
